  • A 9-year-old boy who was confirmed measles by clinical manifestations and serum measles IgM antibody presented with bilateral visual loss 12 days after the onset of maculopapular rash. Complete ophthalmic and neurologic examinations, radiologic studies, and lumbar puncture were performed. Visual acuities were counting fingers in both eyes, with mild bilateral optic disk hyperemia and swelling noted. Neurologic examination was unremarkable, however, a magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed high signals on basal ganglia, and periventricular white matter. The cerebrospinal fluid was devoid of white cells. Intravenous methylprednisolone and high dose immunoglobulins were administered, and clinical findings resolved completely within 6 months.

  • Pathological studies on 6 milk goats administrated with urea were carried out to determine the effects of acute and chronic poisonings on the animal. Clinical signs appeared about 10 minutes after ingestion of the urea and they consisted chiefly in dullness, staggering, uncontrolled urination, dyspnea, frothy salivation, bloating, muscular tremor, humping of back and tetanic spasms. Macroscopic lesions were failure of blood clot, frothy and bloody contents in the highly congested respiratory tract, pulmonary edema, rumenitis and abomatitis accompanying with petechiation of the upper small intestine. Microscopically, the liver showed vacuolar degeneration, fatty change and areas of necrosis and partial proliferation of the interlobular connective tissues in chronic crises. The renal epithelium displaced vacuolar degeneration, necrosis and hyaline casts in their lumens. In the lungs, there were hyperemia, edema, hemorrhages, and acute catarrhal bronchitis. Neuronal degeneration and necrosis in the central nervous system, catarrhal rumenitis, abomatitis, doudenitis and myocardial hemorrhage were also demonstrated.

  • The clinical and histopathological observation of leucocytozoonosis was carried out during July, 1982 at a poultry compound in Gyeongbuk province and the results were summarized as follows: 1. Leucocytozoonosis was observed in 36,900 of 59,900 chickens (61.6%) and the mortality rate was 18.3% (6,760 of 36,900 chickens infected). 2. Clinical findings were anorexia, dyspnea, paleness of comb, greenish diarrhea and reduction of egg production. 3. Gross lesions were yellowish white spots scattered on parenchymal organs and swelling of liver and spleen. In addition, petechiation and ecchymosis of small intestine, egg yolk and subcutaneous tissues were observed. 4. Histological findings were infiltration of mononuclear cells in liver, heart and lung, appearance of megaloschizonts in heart, liver, proventriculus and pancreas, proliferation of foreign body giant cells in heart, and hyperemia and swelling of all parenchymal organs.

  • This paper dealt with the light microscopical and electron microscopical findings on the morphological changes of the liver of Korean native goat injected with toxin (culture filtrate) of Clostridium perfringens which was isolated from Korean native cattle died of acute Clostridium perfringens enterotoxemia. The results observed are summarized as follows. In the microscopical findings, hyperemia and minute hemorrhage of the liver parenchyma, dilatation of hepatic central vein and centrilobular necrosis of liver, cloudy swelling and hydropic degeneration of hepatic cells, and appearance of light eosinophilic granular bodies in the vacuoles were recognized. In the electron microscopical findings, appearance of pinocytotic vesicle (coated vesicle), fusion of these vesicles, formation of vacuole and accumulation of minute granular proteinous materials in the vacuole were observed in the hepatic cells. Decreased number of glycogen granules, swelling and destruction of mitochondria, proliferation of smooth-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, enlargement of rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, dispersal of thready agranular membranous structure and appearance of secondary lysosome were recognized in the hepatic cell cytoplasm.

  • The Horner's syndrome includes anisocoria as a result of miosis of the involved pupil with ptosis of the upper and lower lids, which results in slight narrowing of the palpebral fissure. Ipsilateral facial hyperemia and anhidrosis over the face and neck are less common features. The findings with Horner's syndrome are a result of the loss of sympathetic innervation to the ipsilateral eye and face. Recently we experienced 3 cases of Horner's syndrome that developed postoperatively and report briefly with literature.

  • The Thoroughbred horse was an approximately 4-years-old castrated male with highly emaciation, nasal epistaxis and subsequently died. Gross necropsy revealed epistaxis and hyperemia on the lung, multiple hemorrhage in muscle, and liver was focally attached to the peritoneum with fibrin. According to polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Equine herpes virus type 1 and 4 (EHV type 1, 4) was detected in the lung and trachea. In bacterial culture from kidney, liver, spleen, muscle and blood, Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus was isolated. Based on the gross lesion and PCR, this horse was diagnosed as EHV type 1, 4 and S. zooepidemicus coinfection.

  • The present studies were undertaken in attempt to investigate the therapeutic effect of ethanol in dogs intoxicated with ethylene glycol Three dogs treated with ethylene glycol and other three dogs with ethylene glycol plus 20% ethanol orally were examined on clinical signs, endoscopic views, histopathological findings, and autopsy findings respectively. The results obtained were summarized as fellows : 1. The clinical sings and their severity of dogs intoxicated with ethylene glycol were time related and progressed from vomiting, depression, thirsty, tachycardia, tachypnea, convulsiot ataxia, melena, uremia and coma, but clinical signs of dogs treated with ethylene glycol and ethanol simultaneously only stowed vomiting and thirsty. 2. In the gastroscopic view, the dogs intoxicated with ethyelne glycol showed edematous, hyperemia, errosive and ulcerative lesions in the fundus and body area but the dogs treated with ethylene glycol and ethanol simultanously showed edematous and hyperemic lesions. 3. Oral treatment of ethanol with ethylene glycol simultaneously have reduced the signs of EG intoxications in dogs.

  • An eight-year-old Shih-Tzu dog was referred to Kyungpook National University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital because of severe glaucoma and exophthalmos. The symptoms included severe buphthalmos, conjunctival hyperemia, focal dried cornea and discomfort in the affected eye. Although enucleation was considered as a potential intervention measure in light of the severity of symptoms, it was possible to save the globe and relieve symptoms through evisceration, intraocular prosthesis implantation, and lateral canthoplasty. Our experience with this case suggests that symptomatic salvage therapy, rather than enucleation, is an appropriate approach for resolution of exopthalmos and other complications associated with glaucoma surgery.

  • A 46-year old man visited our outpatient clinic with complaint of foreign body sensation in throat after consuming raw freshwater fish 5 days ago. Laryngoscopic examination revealed a motile worm attached on posterior pharyngeal wall. The worm was removed using biopsy forceps under transnasal endoscopy and evidently identified as Clinostomum complanatum after microscopic examination. Patient's subjective foreign body sensation of throat and hyperemia of laryngeal mucosa remained for approximately 2 weeks post-removal, which were eventually resolved after administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and anti-refluxant drug for 2 weeks. Treatment was ended at three weeks since the first visit. C. complanatum infections in humans are rare, and only four cases have been reported in Korea. Symptoms resembling pharyngitis or laryngitis occurs by consumption of raw, infected freshwater fish and treatment is done by mechanically removing the parasite.

  • Development of de novo dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) at a different site after resolution of an initial DAVF, is rare. Here we report two cases, which we encountered in our hospital. A 68-year-old woman presented with pulsatile tinnitus on the left side. Cerebral angiography demonstrated a left anterior condylar confluence (ACC) DVAF and she underwent transvenous embolization. Four years after this treatment, she presented with tinnitus on the left side, and cerebral angiography revealed a right DAVF around the sinus of the lesser sphenoid wing. Another 69-year-old woman presented with left-sided orbital bruits, chemosis, and conjunctival hyperemia. Cerebral angiography showed left cavernous sinus (CS) DAVF, for which she underwent transvenous embolization for CS DAVF. One year later, she developed a left ACC and transverse-sigmoid sinus (TSS) DAVF.
