  • The interplay of plant hormones is one of the essential mechanisms for plant growth and development. A recent study reported that Brassinosteroids (BR) and ABSCISIC ACID (ABA) interact antagonistically in early seedling developments through the BR-mediated epigenetic repression of ABSCISIC ACID-INSENSITIVE 3 (ABI3). However, the other physiological roles of the BR-mediated regulation of ABI3 and ABA responses beyond early seedling developments remain largely unknown. Here, we showed that the activation of BR signaling by high temperatures promotes flowering time through the suppression of ABI3 expressions. Elevated ambient temperature induced early flowering in wild type Col-0 plants, but not in BR-defective bri1-116 mutant plants. Conversely, a hyper BR biosynthetic dwf4-D mutant displayed more sensitive thermomorphic long shoot elongation and early flowering. Both expression patterns and physiological responses supported the biological roles of ABI3 in the regulation of floral transition and reproduction under high temperature conditions. Finally, we confirmed that the lowered expressions of the transcript and protein levels of ABI3 brought on by elevated temperature were correlated with warmth-induced early flowering phenotypes. In conclusion, our data suggest that the BR- and warmth-mediated regulation of ABI3 are important in thermomorphic reproductive phase transitions in plants.

  • Hydrogen concentration depth profiles in homoepitaxial Si(001) films grown from hyper-thermal Si beams generated by ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) ion-beam sputtering have been measured by nuclear reaction analyses as a function of film growth temperature and deposition rate. Bulk H concentrations CH in the crystalline Si layers were found tio be below detection limits, 1${\times}$1019cm-3, with no indication of significant H surface segregation at the crystalline/amorphous interface region. This is quite different than the case for growth by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) where strong surface segregation was observed for similar deposition conditions with average CH values of 1${\times}$1020cm-3 in the amorphous overlayer. The markedly decreased H concentrations in the present experiments are due primarily to hydrogen desorption by incident hyperthermal Si atoms. Reduced H surface coverages during growth combined with collisionally-induced filling of interisland trenches and enhanced interlayer mass transport provide an increase in critical epitaxial thicknesses by up to an order of magnitude over previous MBE results.

  • The effects of annealing condition on the occurrence of the delamination in cold drawn hyper-eutectoid steel wires, were investigated. Annealing treatment was performed on cold drawn steel wires for temperature range of $425^{\circ}C\sim500^{\circ}C$ with the variation of annealing time from 30sec to 15min. The increase of annealing temperature and time would cause the decrease of tensile strength and the increase of ductility. However, the occurrence of the delamination, representing torsional ductility, showed the different way from the variation of ductility.

  • Traditionally nuclear thermal hydraulic and nuclear safety has relied on numerical simulations to predict the system response of a nuclear power plant either under normal operation or accident condition. However, this approach may sometimes be rather time consuming particularly for design and optimization problems. To expedite the decision-making process data-driven models can be used to deduce the statistical relationships between inputs and outputs rather than solving physics-based models. Compared to the traditional approach, data driven models can provide a fast and cost-effective framework to predict the behavior of highly complex and non-linear systems where otherwise great computational efforts would be required. The objective of this work is to develop an AI algorithm to predict the peak fuel cladding temperature as a metric for the successful implementation of FLEX strategies under extended station black out. To achieve this, the model requires to be conditioned using pre-existing database created using the thermal-hydraulic analysis code, MARS-KS. In the development stage, the model hyper-parameters are tuned and optimized using the talos tool.

  • The uranium removal capacity of radish sprouts (Raphanus sativus L.) in groundwater was calculated on the basis of the amount of uranium accumulated in the radish sprouts rather than the concentration in solution, of which process was very limited in previous studies. Continuous rhizofiltration clean-up system was designed to investigate the feasibility of radish sprouts, applying for uranium contaminated groundwater (U concentration: 110 μg/L) taken at Bugogdong, Busan. Six acrylic boxes (10 cm × 30 cm × 10 cm) were connected in a direct series for the continuous rhizofiltration system and 200 g of radish sprouts cultivars was placed in each box. The groundwater was flushed through the system for 48 hours at the constant rate of 5 mL/min. The rhizofiltration system was operated in the phytotron, of which conditions were at 25℃ temperature, 70% of relative humidity, 4,000 Lux illumination (16 hours/day) and 600 mg/L of CO2 concentration. While 14.4 L of contaminated groundwater was treated, the uranium removal efficiency of the radish sprouts (1,200 g in wet weight) was 77.2% and their removal capacities ranged at 152.1 μg/g-239.7 μg/g (the average: 210.8 μg/g), suggesting that the radish sprouts belong to the group of hyper-accumulation species. After the experiment, the sum of U amounts accumulated in radish sprouts and remained in groundwater was 1,472.2 μg and the uranium recovery ratio of this rhizofiltration experiment was 92.9%. From the results, it was investigated that the radish sprouts can remove large amounts of uranium from contaminated groundwater in a short time (few days) because the fast growth rate and the high U accumulation adsorption capacity.

  • We report on the progress that has been made in developing $MgB_2$ superconducting wires and tapes for commercialization and research efforts. A number of techniques have been developed to overcome the obstacle posed by the poor critical current density ($J_c$) of pristine $MgB_2$. Chemical doping has proved to be the effective way to modify and enhance the superconducting properties, such as the $J_c$ and the irreversibility field ($B_{irr}$). More than 100 different types of dopants have been investigated over the past 8 years. Among these, the most effective dopants have been identified to be SiC and malic acid ($C_4H_6O_5$). The best results, viz. a $B_{irr}$ of 22 T and $J_c$ of $30,000\;A{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ at 4.2 K and 10 T, were reported for malic acid doped $MgB_2$ wires, which matched the benchmark performance of commercial low temperature superconductor wires. In this work, we discuss the progress made in $MgB_2$ conductors over the past few years at the University of Wollongong, Hyper Tech Research, Inc., and Ohio State University.

  • A nonlinear optical hyperbranched polyester (PE-Azo/Hyper) was synthesized from 4-[N,N-bis(hydroxyethyl)amino-4'-formyl] azobenzene and cyanoacetic acid by a Knoevenagel polycondensation using 4-(dimethylamino) pyridine as a base. The resulting polymer was soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as N,N-dimethylformamide and 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone and could be processed into optical quality films by spin coating. The molecular weight was determined to be $M_w$=61,800 ($M_W/M_n{=1.86}$) by gel permeation chromatography using polystyrene as a standard. No melting point was detected by differential scanning Calorimeter, indicating that this polymer presents an amorphous state. It shows a glass transition temperature of $121^{\circ}C$. The second-order nonlinear optical coefficient $d_{33}$ of the poled polymer determined by the second harmonic generation at 1064 nm was 25.4 pm/V.

  • The intensive dust observation experiment has been performed at Korea Global Atmosphere Watch Center (KGAW) in Anmyeon, Korea during each spring season from 2007 to 2009. Downward and upward hyper-spectral spectrums over the dust condition were measured to understand the hyper-spectral properties of Asian dust using both ground-based Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and space-borne AIRS/Aqua. To understand the impact of the Asian dust, a Line-by-Line radiative transfer model runs to calculate the high resolution infrared spectrum over the wave number range of $500-500cm^{-1}$. Furthermore, the radiosonde, a $PM_{10}$ Sampler, a Micro Pulse Lidar (MPL), and an Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) are used to understand the vertical profile of temperature and humidity and the properties of Asian dust like concentration, altitude of dust layer, and size distribution. In this study, we found the Asian dust distributed from surface up to 3-4 km and volume concentration is increased at the size range between 2 and $8{\mu}m$ The observed dust spectrums are larger than the calculated clear sky spectrums by 15~60K for downward and lower by around 2~6K for upward in the wave number range of $800-1200cm^{-1}$. For the characteristics of the spectrum during the Asian dust, the downward spectrum is revealed a positive slope for $800-1000cm^{-1}$ region and negative slope over $1100-1200cm^{-1}$ region. In the upward spectrum, slopes are opposed to the downward one. It is inferred that the difference between measured and calculated spectrum is mostly due to the contribution of emission and/or absorption of the dust particles by the aerosol amount, size distribution, altitude, and composition.

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to develop a novel endolysin (PanLys.1) for the specific killing of the ruminal hyper-ammonia-producing bacterium Peptostreptococcus anaerobius (P. anaerobius). Methods: Whole genome sequences of P. anaerobius strains and related bacteriophages were collected from the National Center for Biotechnology Information database, and the candidate gene for PanLys.1 was isolated based on amino acid sequences and conserved domain database (CDD) analysis. The gene was overexpressed using a pET system in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3). The lytic activity of PanLys.1 was evaluated under various conditions (dosage, pH, temperature, NaCl, and metal ions) to determine the optimal lytic activity conditions. Finally, the killing activity of PanLys.1 against P. anaerobius was confirmed using an in vitro rumen fermentation system. Results: CDD analysis showed that PanLys.1 has a modular design with a catalytic domain, amidase-2, at the N-terminal, and a cell wall binding domain, from the CW-7 superfamily, at the C-terminal. The lytic activity of PanLys.1 against P. anaerobius was the highest at pH 8.0 (p<0.05) and was maintained at 37℃ to 45℃, and 0 to 250 mM NaCl. The activity of PanLys.1 significantly decreased (p<0.05) after Mn2+ or Zn2+ treatment. The relative abundance of P. anaerobius did not decrease after administration PanLys.1 under in vitro rumen conditions. Conclusion: The application of PanLys.1 to modulate P. anaerobius in the rumen might not be feasible because its lytic activity was not observed in in vitro rumen system.
