In recent materials industry, researches on the technology to manufacture super hydrophobic surface by effectively controlling the wettability of solid surface are expanding. Research on the fabrication of super hydrophobic surface has been studied not only for basic research but also for self-cleaning, anti-icing, anti-friction, flow resistance reduction in construction, textile, communication, military and aviation fields. A super hydrophobic surface is defined as a surface having a water droplet contact angle of 150 ° or more. The contact angle is determined by the surface energy and is influenced not only by the chemical properties of the surface but also by the rough structure. In this paper, maskless lithography using DMD, electro etching, anodizing and hot embossing are used to make the polymer resin PMMA surface super hydrophobic. In the fabrication of microstructure, DMDs are limited by the spacing of microstructure due to the structural limitations of the mirrors. In order to overcome this, maskless lithography using a transfer mechanism was used in this paper. In this paper, a super hydrophobic surface with micro and nano composite structure was fabricated. And the wettability characteristics of the micro pattern surface were analyzed.

A hydrophobic surface has been fabricated on aluminum by two-step surface treatment processes consisting of structure modification and surface coating. Nature inspired micro nano scale structures were artificially created on the aluminum surface by a blasting and Ar ion beam etching. And a hydrophobic thin film was coated by a trimethylsilane ($(CH_3)_3SiH$) plasma deposition to minimize the surface energy of the micro nano structure surface. The contact angle of micro nano structured aluminum surface with the trimethylsilane coating was $123^{\circ}$ (surface energy: 9.05 $mJ/m^2$), but the contact angle of only trimethylsilane coated sample without the micro nano surface structure was $92^{\circ}$ (surface energy: 99.15 $mJ/m^2$). In the hydrophobic treatment of aluminum surface, a trimethylsilane coated sample having the micro nano structure was more effective than only trimethylsilane coated sample without the micro nano structure.

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in aqueous solutions has a hydrophobic character which can induce the hydrophobic interaction between its nonpolar parts. The hydrophobic properties of aqueous PEO solutions are studied by the viscometry in terms of the water structure-making and -breaking capabilities of added solutes of ureas. The results show that the contracted conformation of PEO of low molecular weight, namely poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), does not result from the hydrophobic interaction between the nonpolar parts of PEO but it can participate in a hydrophobic interaction between the nonpolar parts of PEO and added ureas solutes with nonpolar groups, which can induce a large hydrodynamic volume and increase the viscosity. On the other hand, the PEO of large molecular weight seems to behave like any other water soluble polymers with nonpolar parts and its conformation in aqueous solutions is well explained in terms of water structure perturbing capabilities of added ureas.
To investigate the importance of the hydrophobic interaction in the spermine-induced collapse of DNA to a compact structure, the effect of urea on the anomalous absorbance-temperature profile of calf thymus DNA has been investigated. With the increase of the urea concentration, the trough phase of the anomalous absorbance-temperature profile was eliminated eventually. The cooperativity, enthalpy, and the midpoint of the transition to the trough region are more sensitive to urea than those of the Tm-region transition. The present data of the adverse effect of urea, a hydrophobic environmental reagent, on the thermal stabilization of the condensed state of DNA, suggest that hydrophobic interaction may play an important role in the stabilization of the tertiary structure of the collapsed state of DNA.
Our previous studies indicated that native carbonic anhydrase does not interact with hydrophobic adsorbents and that it acquires this ability upon denaturation. In the present study, an apo form of the enzyme was prepared by removal of zinc and a comparative study was performed on some characteristic features of the apo and native forms by far- and near-UV circular dichroism (CD), intrinsic fluorescent spectroscopy, 1-anilino naphthalene-8-sulfonate (ANS) binding, fluorescence quenching by acrylamide, and Tm measurement. Results indicate that protein flexibility is enhanced and the hydrophobic sites become more exposed upon conversion to the apo form. Accordingly, the apo structure showed a greater affinity for interaction with hydrophobic adsorbents as compared with the native structure. As observed for the native enzyme, heat denaturation of the apo form promoted interaction with alkyl residues present on the adsorbents and, by cooling followed by addition of zinc, catalytically-active immobilized preparations were obtained.
Cationic surfactants can be used to modify surface of solids to promote adsorption of hydrophobic organic compounds. This behavior is due to the surfactant forming aggregate structure on the solid surface. Partition coefficients are commonly used to quantify the distribution of organic pollutants between the aqueous and particulate phases of aquatic system Partitioning of hydrophobic compounds to cetyltrimethylammonium bromide ( CTAB ) coated silicate has been investigated as a function of surfactant surface coverage at I=0 and 0.1 ionic strength. Toluene, Xylene, TCI sorption experiments demonstrated that the CTAB coated silicate was able to remove these hydrophobic organic compounds from solution The hydrophobic organic compound with the higher Kow had higher removals than lowest Kow hydrophobic organic compound.
Refinement of NMR structures by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with a solvent model has improved the structural quality. In this study, we applied MD refinement with the generalized Born (GB) implicit solvent model to protein structure determined under membrane-like environments. Despite popularity of the GB model, its applications to the refinement of NMR structures of hydrophobic proteins, in which detergents or organic solvents enclose proteins, are limited, and there is little information on the use of another GB parameter for these cases. We carried out MD refinement of crambin NMR structure in dodecylphosphocholine (DPC) micelles (Ahn et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2006, 128, 4398-4404) with GB/Surface area model and two different surface tension coefficients, one for aquatic and the other for hydrophobic conditions. Our data show that, of two structures by MD refinement with GB model, the one refined with the parameter to consider hydrophobic condition had the better qualities in terms of precision and solvent accessibility.
An epoxy coating was designed to give a hydrophobic property on its surface by modifying it with three types of Amino Terminated Polydimethylsiloxane (ATP), and then effects of the modification on the structure, surface hydrophobic tendency, water transport behavior and hence corrosion protectiveness of the modified epoxy coating were examined using FT-IR spectroscopy, hydrothermal cyclic test, and impedance test. The surface of epoxy coating was changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic property due primarily to a phase separation tendency between epoxy and modifier by the modification. The phase separation tendency is more appreciable when modified by ATP with higher molecular weight ATP at higher content. Water transport behavior of the modified epoxy coating decreased more in that with higher hydrophobic surface property. The resistance to localized corrosion of the modified epoxy coated carbon steel was well agreed with its water transport behavior and hydrophobic tendency.
In recent years, the study of self-assembly peptide used in drug delivery system has been attracted great interest from scientists. In the category are self-assembly peptides in the structure either with one hydrophobic surface and another hydrophilic or a hydrophobic head and a hydrophilic tail. Here, we focus on a novel designed peptide EYK with double amphiphilic surfaces, investigating on the capability of peptide as a carrier for hydrophobic compound model pyrene. The fluorescence data presented the dynamic process of the transfer, showing that the pyrene was in the crystalline form in peptide solution, and molecularly migrated from its peptide encapsulations into the membrane bilayers when the peptide-pyrene suspension was mixed with liposome vesicles. The results indicated that the peptide EYK could stabilize hydrophobic pyrene in aqueous solution and delivered it into EPC liposome as a potential carrier.

We investigate the slippage effect in a micro-channel depending on the surface characteristics; hydrophilic, hydrophobic, and super-hydrophobic wettabilities. The micro-scale grooves are fabricated on the vertical wall to make the super-hydrophobic surfaces, which enable us visualize the flow fields near walls and directly measure the slip length. Velocity profiles are measured using micro-particle image velocimetry (Micro-PIV) and compared those in the hydrophilic glass, hydrophobic PDMS, and super-hydrophobic PDMS micro-channels. To directly measure the velocity in the super-hydrophobic micro-channel, the transverse groove structures are fabricated on the vertical wall in the micro-channel. The velocity profile near the wall shows larger slip length and, if the groove structure is high and wide, the liquid meniscus forms curves into the valley so that the wavy flow is created after the grooves.
