Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles Vol. 22, No. 1 (1998) p. 72∼79 The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of geometrical structure and fiber type on the water vapor transport properties of nonwoven batting materials. Two types of fiber were used such as polyester and wool. Correlation between physical properties of nonwovens and water vapor transport rate was analyzed by Pearson Correlation. Steady and dynamic state water vapor transport properties were measured by absorption, evaporation and cobaltots chloride method respectively. The results were as follows: 1) In geometrical structure, thickness of nonwovens was effected on absorption and evaporation rate and air permeability was more influencing factor on water vapor transport rate than porosity. There were no decreasing of water vapor transport rate in hydrophilic fiber at high relative humudity. 2) The hydrophilicity of fiber affected steady and dynamic state water vapor permeabilities and wool nonwoven showed higher water vapor transport rate than polyester at high relative humidity. 3) Thickness showed higher correlation coefficient with water vapor transport rate than other physical properties of nonwovens.
To study the effects of surface structure of fiber on the decrement of fatty soil removal at high temperature, the following variables were selected: controled and alkali-treated P.E.T.(polyester) fabrics and chopped fibers as substrates to estimate the detergencies, different aging methods of soiled substrates, and different washing temperatures and surfactant solutions. Radiotagged tripalmitin was used as soil and the detergency was estimated by means of liquid scintillation counting method. The results were as following: The surface of the fiber became rough with many grooves and the hydrophilicity of the fiber was increased and the structure of the fabric became loose by alkali treatment. While the detergency of alkali-treated P.E.T. fabric was better than that of controled P. E. T. fabric, there was no significant differences between the detergencies of controled and alkali-treated chopped fibers. These results indicate that the increment of detergency of alkali-treated P.E.T. fabric is mainly resulted from the changes of fabric structure and the improved hydrophilicity of fiber by alkai treatment. The detergency of tripalmitin was increased with elevating temp. below the m.p. of tripalmitin, was decreased around the m.p., and again was increased above the m.p ..It is considered that the decrement of detergency around the m.p. is due to the diffusion of molten tripalmitin into the grooves on fiber surface, the inner part of fiber, and between fibers. When controled and alkali-treated soiled fabrics and soiled chopped fibers were washed in the distilled water and in the Na-DBS solution respectively, below $60^{\circ}C$ detergencies of alkali-treated fabrics and chopped fibers were improved. However above $60^{\circ}C$ this result was reversed. Therefore these results are regarded as the effects of grooves on fiber surface at high temp. and improved hydrophilicity at low temp. by alkali treatment. When controled and alkali-treated soiled fabrics and soiled chopped fibers were hot-aged before washing, the detergencies of both species were decreased generally. Because the soil was diffused into the grooves on fiber surface, the inner part of fiber, and between fibers during hot-aging. The detergencies of hot-aged species were also decreased above certain temp.. These results suggest that the decrement of detergency at high temp. be resulted not only from the diffusion of soil into the grooves on fiber surface, the inner part of fiber, and between fibers, but also from the characteristics of surfactant solutions.
Much of requirements to the civil and building structures have been changed in accordance with the social and economic progress. Ductility of high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites(HPFRCCs), which exhibit strain hardening and multiple crackling characteristics under the uniaxial tensile stress is drastically improved. In HPFRCC application, PVA fiber has been dominantly used as a reinforcement because of its excellent alkali resistant nature as well as high strength. But the inherent strong hydrophilicity of PVA fiber promotes the moisture absorption in cement matrix and thus it may cause the corrosion of steel structure. Therefore, it is necessary to control the interfacial adhesion of cement composites. In present study, to control the interfacial adhesion of the cementitious composites reinforced by PVA fiber, UV irradiation of the PVA fiber were performed and their effects on the adhesion property and general characteristics were investigated extensively.

Trypsin can be immobilized on silk fibroin fiber (SFF) by introducing several spacer arms, such as ethylene diamine (ED), bovine serum albumin (BSA) and silk sericin (SS). Direct immobilization on silk fiber (SFFGA) has low activity because of the steric hindrance between the trypsin and substrate. The introduction of spacer arms onto SFF-GA can enhance the activity of trypsin by reducing the steric hindrance. When ED is used as a spacer arm, the activity of trypsin has increased but its stability decreased due to the increased hydrophobicity of SFF. BSA and SS, as a spacer arm, have better results in both activity and stability. SFF-BSA shows some decrease in the specific activity due to improper immobilizatin. SFF-SS maintained 90% of its initial activity even after 12 hrs incubation at $50^{\circ}C$. In the case of repeated hydrolysis of silk sericin with immobilized trypsin, SFF-GA and SFF-ED lost 50% of their initial activity right after first run, whereas SFF-BSA and SFF-SS maintained 80% of their initial activities even after 5 runs. Higher operational stability is due to increased hydrophilicity of SFF by introducing hydrophilic spacer arms such as BSA and SS. The high content of serine in SS increases the hydrophilicity of SFF resulting the best results among other spacer arms.
Previous investigation results revealed that after the Low Temperature Plasma (LTP) treatment, the hydrophilicity of wool fiber was improved significantly. Such improvement enhances the wool dyeing and finishing processes which might be due to the changes of the wool surface to a more reactive one. In this paper, wool fibers were treated with LTP with different gases, namely, oxygen, nitrogen and gas mixture (25 % hydrogen/75 % nitrogen). Investigations showed that chemical composition of wool fiber surface varied differently with the different plasma gas used. The surface chemical composition of the different LTP-treated wool fibers was evaluated with different characterization methods, namely FTIR-ATR, XPS and saturated adsorption value. The experimental results were thoroughly discussed.

This work presents the tensile properties and water uptake behavior of plasma treated abaca fibers reinforced epoxy composites. The composites were prepared by vacuum assisted resin transfer molding. The effects of treatment on tensile properties and sorption characteristics of abaca fiber composites in distilled water and salt solution at room temperature were investigated. The tensile strength of the composites increased with plasma treatment. With plasma treatment, an improvement of 92.9% was obtained in 2.5 min exposure time in plasma. This is attributed to high fiber-matrix compatibility. Less improvement on tensile properties of hybrid treatment of sodium hydroxide and plasma was obtained. However, both treatments reduced overall water uptake in distilled water and salt solution. Hydrophilicity of the fibers decreased upon plasma and sodium hydroxide treatment, which decreases water uptake.

In previous study, we examined poly(butylene succinate) ionomer (PBSi) and confirmed that PBSi showed acceptable mechanical and rheological properties to apply in various field, due to the physical cross-linkage formed by ion aggregation. Besides, the incorporation of ionic groups led to the change of surface properties such as the hydrophilicity and surface morphology, which could affect hydrolytic degradation. (omitted)
