  • A survey was conducted to investigate the presence of epiphytic organisms in four kelp Saccharina japonica farms in the coastal area of Korea from 2014 to 2015. Of 740 kelp samples that were taken, 208 exhibited six kinds of epiphytic organisms, including hydroid (detection rate: 11.6%), bryozoan (6.4%), polychaete (3.4%), algae (3.2%), caprellid (3%), and oyster (0.5%). The infestation rate for hydroid, bryozoan, and polychaete was significantly higher in the Wando farm, Busan farm, and Pohang farm, respectively. Epiphytic organisms were generally observed during May to September and not January to April, indicating that their infestation was significantly higher when the water had a higher temperature. The histopathogical examination revealed that hydroid and bryozoan organisms were attached on the cuticula of the thallus while some algae were attached on the cuticula of the thallus or had penetrated the epidermis. These results indicate that hydroid and bryozoan were the most predominant epiphytic organisms in Korean kelp farms, even though the infested thallus had not been broken.

  • Farnesyl Protein Transferase (FPTase) catalyses a post-translational modification of Ras that is obligatory for the cell transforming activity of this oncogene protein. The screening of natural products to identify inhibitors of this enzyme as a potential anticancer agents, has led to the isolation of a novel lactone, from the hydroid Solanderia secunda. Solandelactone G has been isolated from the hydroid Solanderia secunda collected along the offshore of Jaejudo and Keomunde. The structure of the compound has been determined as cyclopropane containing C$\_$22/ fatty acid lactone on the basis of the combined spectral and chemical methods

  • The hydroid specimens for this study were collected by SCUBA diving from about 15 m deep at the Isl. Marado, Jeju-do, Korea. Among the identified species $Aglaophenia$ $latecarinata$ Allman, 1877 was shown to be new to the Korean fauna. This species belongs to the family Plumulariidae which is the second large hydroid taxon in Korea. The distinct morphological characteristic of this species is the nine marginal teeth of hydrotheca, one median abcauline and four pairs laterals. Median abcauline tooth is bifid, with a broad keel extending along the front of the hydrotheca from its margin to the mesial inferior nematotheca, from which the species name was originated. Up to date four aglaophenian species of 35 plumularians have been reported from Korea.

  • In 2022, during a survey of intertidal fauna around Jindo located in the Dadohaehaesang National Park in the South Sea, epizoic hydroids attaching onto seagrass (Zostera sp.) growing on soft sediments were collected. Through taxonomic examination, an unrecorded species, Ectopleura radiata, is newly added to the hydrozoan fauna of Korea. In addition, DNA barcoding for species from Ectopleura and Tubularia clarified the distinction among morphologically indistinguishable species without gonophores. Up to now, only one species, E. crocea, has been reported in Korea. Through this study, a total of two species belonging to genus Ectopleura have been reported in Korean waters so far.
