While the vertical open type of heat exchanger is more effective in areas of abundant groundwater, and is becoming more widely used, the heat exchanger most commonly used in geothermal heating and cooling systems in Korea is the vertical closed loop type. In this study, we performed numerical simulations of the optimal utilization of geothermal energy based on the hydrogeological and thermal properties to evaluate the efficiency of the vertical open type in areas of abundant groundwater supply. The first simulation indicated that the vertical open type using groundwater directly is more efficient than the vertical closed loop type in areas of abundant groundwater. Furthermore, a doublet system with separated injection and extraction wells was more efficient because the temperature difference (${\Delta}$) between the injection and extraction water generated by heat exchange with the ground is large. In the second simulation, we performed additional numerical simulations of the optimal utilization of geothermal energy that incorporated heat transfer, distance, flow rate, and groundwater hydraulic gradient targeting a single well, SCW (standing column well), and doublet. We present a flow diagram that can be used to select the optimal type of heat exchanger based on these simulation results. The results of this study indicate that it is necessary to examine the adequacy of the geothermal energy utilization system based on the hydrogeological and thermal properties of the area concerned, and also on a review of the COP (coefficient of performance) of the geothermal heating and cooling system.

Problems that arise from the use of groundwater can be minimized by connecting surface water with groundwater. We investigated the groundwater level at Osibcheon, Yeongdeok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk Province, and performed borehole investigation. We then used the SWAI-MODFLOW model to analyze variations in groundwater level and discharge amount. We also discuss how to assess the potential of groundwater dams in Korean by analyzing the hydrogeological properties of the candidate site.
A combination of drilling, geophysical well logging, and electrical soundings was performed to evaluate seawater intrusion in Baeksu-eup, Youngkwang-gun, Korea. The survey area extends for over 24 $km^2$. To delineate the extent of seawater intrusion, 60 vertical electrical soundings (VES) have been carried out. Twelve wells were also drilled for the collection of hydrogeological, geochemical, and geophysical well logging data, to delineate the degree and vertical extent of seawater intrusion. To map the spatial distribution of seawater in this coastal aquifer, geophysical data and hydrogeochemical results were used, and the relation between the resistivity of groundwater and equivalent NaCl concentration was found. Layer parameters derived from VES data, various in-situ physical properties from geophysical well logging, and the estimated equivalent NaCl concentration were very useful for quantitative evaluation of seawater intrusion. Our approach for evaluating seawater intrusion can be considered a valuable attempt at enhancing the use of geophysical data.
This study evaluated the pattern of groundwater fluctuation in cyrstalline rock using time series and factor analyses. From the results, groundwater level for the 18 wells was classified into 4 types reflecting the hydrogeological properties and rainfall event. Type 1 (DB1-5, DB1-6, DB2-2, KB-10, KB-13) was significantly influenced by groundwater flow through water-conducting features, whereas type 2 (DB1-3, DB1-7, KB-1~KB-3, KB-7, KB-11, KB-14, KB-15) was affected by minor fracture network as well as rainfall event. Type 3 (DB1-1, DB1-2) was mainly influenced by surface infiltration of rainfall event. Type 4 (DB1-8, KB-9) was reflected by the irregular variation of groundwater level caused by anisotropy and heterogeneity of crystalline rock.

Permeability-analyzing methods commonly involve small-scale drilling, such as pumping or slug test, but it is difficult to identify overall distribution of permeability of the entire target sites due to high cost and time requirement. Spectral induced polarization (SIP) method is known to be capable of providing distributions of both the porosity and the pore size, the two major parameters determining permeability of the porous medium. The relationship between SIP variables and permeability has been studied to identify the hydrological characteristics of target sites. Kozeny-Carman formula has been improved through many experiments to better predict fluid permeability with electrical properties. In this work, the permeability prediction techniques based on SIP data were presented in accordance with the hydrogeological and electrical characteristics of a porous medium. Following the summary of the techniques, various models and related laboratory experiments were analyzed and examined. In addition, the field applicability of the prediction model was evaluated by field case analysis.

With South Korea increasingly focusing on nuclear energy, the management of spent nuclear fuel has attracted considerable attention in South Korea. This study established a novel procedure for selecting safety-relevant radionuclides for long-term safety assessments of a deep geological repository in South Korea. Statistical evaluations were performed to identify the design basis reference spent nuclear fuels and evaluate the source term for up to one million years. Safety-relevant radionuclides were determined based on the half-life criteria, the projected activities for the design basis reference spent nuclear fuel, and the annual limit of ingestion set by the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission Notification No. 2019-10 without considering their chemical and hydrogeological properties. The proposed process was used to select 56 radionuclides, comprising 27 fission and activation products and 29 actinide nuclides. This study explains first the determination of the design basis reference spent nuclear fuels, followed by a comprehensive discussion on the selection criteria and methodology for safety-relevant radionuclides.
Purpose: The area such as historic sites where distributed in the hills surrounded by the mountains in the past, if heavy rains occur, soil that distributed in the substructure of a sedimentary layer's permeability decreases therefore, water do not smoothly drainage and increases surface structures' moisture content. Therefore, many phenomena occur such as the muddy ground. This experiment tried to figure out the cause of poor drainage, predicting poor drainage system when rainfall occur. So not only the base of cultural properties distributed in the historic site, but also have big influences on the upper structure. Method: We are going to propose an improvement plan through the various sites exploration and the field permeability test. In addition, analyze interrelationship to figure out the cause of the poor drainage through monitoring under ground water. Conclusion: As the result of the experiment, the cause of the poor drainage system formed on shallow depth of ground level inside of a land. We can see that soil of surface and fill deposit permeability was in poor condition. Therefore, it was in very inappropriate hydrogeological condition when surface water permeate into the underground when rainfall occurs.

This is about an environmental study of groundwater interference by hydrodynamic dispersion between the well A and well C in Dongsam-dong, the Yeongdo Island, Pusan, Korea. The groundwater in the study wells come from the fracture zones deeply seated in welded lapilli rhyodacitic tuff of the Late Cretaceous Yucheon Group. The boring depth at the well A is 190 meters, and the optimal pumping rate of the well A is about 100 cubic meters per day therein. The fractured aquifers in impermeable welded tuff show the conjugate fracturing type and are of anisotropic. The aquifers along two fracture zones in the well A are 80 and 100 meters in depth, respectively. It is not suggested that those fractured aquifers are simply connected between the well A and C. The sea level fluctuation by ebb and high tides in a day is not effective to the groundwater table in the well A. The pumping for 15 days at the well A doesn't give rise to any changes of the groundwater levels in the neighbor well C. The radius of influence of the well A is measured as less than 200 meters. The measuring electric conductivity for the test of salt tracer doesn't testify any relationship between the well A and the well C. There is the main difference between the well A and the well C on the basis of the water analysis of those wells. the well A is located in the high content zone of salt much over the standard value for drinking, whereas the other wells B. C. D are in the low content area of salt below the standard value. It is elucidated for the high content zone of salt in Yeongdo around the well A to have been uplifted over 20 meters.
The chemical properties and composition (pH, CaO, Fe, $HCO{_3}^-$, and $SO{_4}^{2-}$) of groundwater (GW) and surface water (SW) from the northern (non-carbonate bedrock) and southern (carbonate bedrock) sections of the Daedong River, Pyeongyang were analyzed and compared period of the 1930s. In the southern section, the GW and SW has a higher pH and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ concentration, but lower $HCO{_3}^-$ and Fe levels than in the north. This finding reflects a reaction that formed acid by replacing metal ions in inorganic salts by hydrogen, which resulted from the oxidation of organic material in a clay layer.

Despite its usability, TCE has been managed as a hazardous material due to the toxicity and many contamination cases were surveyed in some developed countries. U.S.EPA(Kram et al., 2001) suggested DNAPL characterization methods and approaches based on survey experiences at several sites. However, Korea has not the least assessment of contamination and trial of remediation, although there are a lot of doubtable areas where ground water would be contaminated with TCE. In this study, we try to assess the volume and extent of ground water contamination with TCE and delineate the contamination source zones in an industrial area. Ground water in this area flows through fractures and the contaminant TCE has the properties of high volatility, high density and low partitioning to soil material. Thus, we applied a variety of technical approaches to identify the contamination status; documentary, hydrogeochemical, hydrogeological and geological surveys. In addition, additional survey was performed based on the interim findings, which showed that ground water contamination was limited to the relatively small area with high concentrations to the deep place. The contamination source zone is estimated to be the asphalt test institute where a great deal of TCE has been used to analyze the amount of asphalt soluble in TCE since 1984. Based on the contamination characterization and a myriad of documents about ground water remediation, appropriate site remediation management options will be recommended later. This study is now under way and this paper was focused on describing the technical approaches used to achieve the goals of this study.
