  • Magnetite was synthesized with $FeSO_4$, and NaOH for the decomposition of carbon dioxide and for the study of the methane formation. The chemical equivalent ratio was changed from 0.5 to 1.50 for the magnetite synthesis. The chemical equivalent ratio was fixed in 1.00, and Nickel chloride and Rhodium chloride equally added and synthesized with the ratio was of 0.10~10.00 mole%. The crystal strucure of the synthesized magnetite was measured XRD. Putting synthesized magnetite in the reactor and using hydrogen gas oxygen-deficient magnetite was made. Injecting carbon dioxide in the reactor, the decomposition reaction was experimented. The formation of methane was confirmed injecting hydrogen gas in the reactor after carbon dioxide was decomposed.

  • In the past decade, Pd based thin films have been studied far hydrogen gas sensors due to their high possibility for energy industry and environmental applications. In this work, we report a navel method to fabricate highly sensitive hydrogen gas sensors based on PdO thin films. The films were deposited on Si substrates in Ar and $O_2$ ambient using reactive sputtering system. A semiconductor process has been utilized to fabricate PdO films with t=40nm. We observed the resistance changes of the PdO films with various $H_2$ concentrations. It was found that the electrical properties of the thin films depend on the composition of oxygen. The sensitivity is defined as $S\;=\;(R_0-R)/R{\times}100%$, where R and $R_0$ are the resistances in the presence of exposing the hydrogen gas and air, respectively. The sensitivity of the thin films was found to be as high as about 95%. After exposing to hydrogen gas, we discovered that the nano-sized cracks formed on the surface of the PdO thin films. The nano-cracks formed in deoxidized PdO thin films were known by playing a key role to reduce more than 4 times the response time of absorption. Our results illustrate that the deoxidized PdO thin films can be used as hydrogen sensors.

  • This paper describes fabrication of a micro cell counter integrated with an oxygen micropump and counting experiment with Sephadex G-25 beads ($70{\sim}100\;{\mu}m$). The pumping part consisted of a microheater, catalyst (manganese dioxide) enveloped with paraffin, hydrogen peroxide, and microchannel, and the counting part consisted of collimated light, a microwindow, and a phototransistor including an external circuit. The micropump generated oxygen gas by decomposing hydrogen peroxide with manganese dioxide, which was initiated by melting the paraffin with the microheater, and pumped beads in the microchannel. When the beads passed the microwindow, they shaded the collimated light and changed the illumination on the phototransistor, which caused the current variation in the circuit. The signals, according to the bead size, reached up to 22 mV with noise level of 2 mV during 50 seconds and the numbers of peaks were analyzed by magnitude.

  • Dielectric thin films of $(Pb_{0.72}La_{0.28})Ti_{0.93}O_3$ were deposited on $Pt(111)/Ti/SiO_2/Si$ substrates in situ by pulsed laser deposition(PLD) and annealed with different gases which are forming gas and oxygen gas, respectively. The diffusion of hydrogen into the ferroelectric film was caused by annealing process and resulted in the destruction of polarization. The dielectric properties of forming gas annealed PLT thin films, which are dielectric constant, ferroelectric characteristic, and leakage current characteristics, were degraded

  • Owing to advantages of polymeric materials for hydrogen tank liner like light-weight property and high specific strength, polymer based composites have gained much attention. Despite of many benefits, polymeric materials for fuel cell tank cause problems which is critical to applications as low gas barrier property, and poor processability when adding fillers. For these reasons, improving gas barrier property of polymer composites is required to study for expanding application fields. This work presents impermeable polymer nanocomposites by introducing thin barrier coating using layer by layer (LBL) deposition method. Also, bi-layered and quad-layered nanocomposites were fabricated and compared for identifying relationship between deposition step and gas barrier property. Reduction in gas permeability was observed without interrupting mechanical property and processability. It is discussed that proper coating conditions were suggested when different coating materials and deposition steps were applied. We investigated morphology, gas barrier property and mechanical properties of fabricated nanocomposites by FE-SEM, Oxygen permeation analyzer, UTM, respectively. In addition, we revealed the mechanism of barrier performance of LBL coating using materials which have high aspect ratio.

  • The most failure mode of PEM fuel cell is gas crossover caused by pinhole formation in MEAs. The degradation phenomena of MEA with pinholes were evaluated in various accelerated operation condition, such as OCV, low humidity and high partial pressure of oxygen. The performances of MEA with pinholes were almost same before and after normal 144 hours operation($70^{\circ}C$, $640mA/cm^2$, 65%RH $H_2/air$). The results of accelerated operation showed that OCV and low humidity condition more deteriorated MEA than gas crossover owing to pinholes. When oxygen was used as cathode gas, the pinholes of MEA were enlarged due to heat of combustion reaction on Pt catalyst of electrodes. This combustion reaction occurred at pinholes near gas inlet and resulted in local MEA failure.

  • Na promoted Pt/$CeO_2$ catalysts with various Na amounts (1, 2, and 3wt%) have been applied to water gas shift reaction (WGS) at a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 45515 $h^{-1}$. 1wt%Pt-2wt%Na/$CeO_2$ catalyst exhibited the highest WGS activity at $240^{\circ}C$ among the catalysts prepared in this study. In addition, 1wt%Pt-2wt%Na/$CeO_2$ catalyst showed relatively stable activity with time on stream. The high activity/stability of 1wt%Pt-2wt%Na/$CeO_2$ catalyst was correlated to its easier reducibility and higher oxygen storage capacity (OSC). As a result, 2wt% Na promoted Pt/$CeO_2$ can be a promising candidate catalyst for the single stage WGS, which requires high intrinsic activity at very high GHSV.

  • Due to the demand of the cold neutron flux in the neutron science and beam utilization technology, the cold neutron source (CNS) has been constructed and operating in the nuclear research reactor all over the world. The majority of the heat load removal scheme in the CNS is two-phase thermosiphon using the liquid hydrogen as a moderator. The CNS moderates thermal neutrons through a cryogenic moderator, liquid hydrogen, into cold neutrons with the generation of the nuclear heat load. The liquid hydrogen in a moderator cell is evaporated for the removal of the generated heat load from the neutron moderation and flows upward into a heat exchanger, where the hydrogen gas is liquefied by the cryogenic helium gas supplied from a helium refrigeration system. The liquefied hydrogen flows down to the moderator cell. To keep the required liquid hydrogen stable in the moderator cell, the CNS consists of an in-pool assembly (IPA) connected with the hydrogen system to handle the required hydrogen gas, the vacuum system to create the thermal insulation, and the helium refrigeration system to provide the cooling capacity. If one of systems is running out of order, the operating research reactor shall be tripped because the integrity of the CNS-IPA is not secured under the full power operation of the reactor. To prevent unscheduled reactor shutdown during a long time because the research reactor has been operating with the multi-purposes, the introduction of the standby cooling system (STS) can be a solution. In this presentation, the design considerations are considered how to design the STS satisfied with the following objectives: (a) to keep the moderator cell less than 350 K during the full power operation of the reactor under loss of the vacuum, loss of the cooling power, loss of common electrical power, or loss of instrument air cases; (b) to circulate smoothly helium gas in the STS circulation loop; (c) to re-start-up the reactor within 1 hour after its trip to avoid the Xenon build-up because more than certain concentration of Xenon makes that the reactor cannot start-up again; (d) to minimize the possibility of the hydrogen-oxygen reaction in the hydrogen boundary.

  • MCVD(modified chemical vapor deposition) used in making optical-fiber currently utilizes the hydrogen-oxygen burner as a energy supply source. To improve the productivity and to reduce the manufacturing cost of optical-fiber, a natural gas-oxygen burner has been developed. The manufacturing processes of optical-fiber consist of vapor deposition, collapse and drawing processes. Among these processes, the vapor deposition and the collapse processes are important in terms of improving the productivity and saving the production cost. The vapor deposition and collapse processes are performed by combustion heat and flame force supplied by a burner. So the flame force of the burner used in these processes is required to have an optimal and consistent value in order to allow uniform heating and collapse of quartz tube. In this regard, the momentum ratio of natural gas and oxygen has been optimally determined by modification of a burner and the inlet flow pass also has been modified.
