  • In this study, an artificial solar simulator composed of a 2.5 kW Xe-Arc lamp and mirror reflector was used to carry out the solar thermal two step thermochemical water decomposition cycle which can produce high efficiency continuous hydrogen production. Through various operating conditions, the change of hydrogen production due to the possibility of a dual-zone reactor and heat recovery were experimentally analyzed. Based on the reaction temperature of Thermal-Reduction step and Water-Decomposition step at $1,400^{\circ}C$ and $1,000^{\circ}C$ respectively, the hydrogen production decreased by 23.2% under the power off condition, and as a result of experiments using heat recovery technology, the hydrogen production increased by 33.8%. Therefore, when a thermochemical two-step water decomposition cycle is conducted using a dual-zone reactor with heat recovery, it is expected that the cycle can be operated twice over a certain period of time and the hydrogen production amount is increased by at least 53.5% compared to a single reactor.

  • This study compares domestic and foreign research on renewable energy-based water electrolysis clean hydrogen. Domestic studies from 2010 to 2023 focused on technological efficiency, energy efficiency, and system efficiency, with few analyzing infrastructure and technology trends. Overseas research initially focused on technological efficiency and stability, but has since shifted to economic and environmental impact, policy effectiveness, industry-university-research cooperation, and sustainability. To improve water electrolysis technology production, this study suggests prioritizing technology stability over efficiency, resolving government regulations and resident acceptance issues, promoting industry-university-institute cooperation for rapid commercialization of research results, and developing a strategy for sustainable development of renewable energy-based water electrolysis technology.

  • Compare to the gaseous hydrogen, liquid hydrogen has various advantages: easy to transport, high energy density, and low risk of explosion. However, the hydrogen liquefaction process is highly energy intensive because it requires lots of energy for refrigeration. On the other hand, the cold energy of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) is wasted during the regasification. It means there are opportunities to improve the energy efficiency of the hydrogen liquefaction process by recovering wasted LNG cold energy. In addition, hydrogen production by natural gas reforming is one of the most economical ways, thus LNG can be used as a raw material for hydrogen production. In this study, a novel hydrogen production and liquefaction process is proposed by using LNG as a raw material as well as a cold source. To develop this process, the hydrogen liquefaction process using hydrocarbon mixed refrigerant and the helium-neon refrigerant is selected as a base case design. The proposed design is developed by applying LNG as a cold source for the hydrogen precooling. The performance of the proposed process is analyzed in terms of energy consumption and exergy efficiency, and it is compared with the base case design. As the result, the proposed design shows 17.9% of energy reduction and 11.2% of exergy efficiency improvement compare to the base case design.

  • In this study, the on-site hydrogen production process for refueling stations that were not energy-optimized was improved through exergy analysis and heat exchange network synthesis. Furthermore, the process was scaled up from 30 Nm3/h to 150 Nm3/h to improve hydrogen production capacity. Exergy analysis results show that exergy destruction in the SMR reactor and the heat exchanger accounts for 58.1 and 19.8%, respectively. Thus, the process is improved by modifying the heat exchange network to reduce the exergy loss in these units. As a result of the process simulation analysis, thermal and exergy efficiency is improved from 75.7 to 78.6% and 68.1 to 70.4%, respectively. In conclusion, it is expected to improve the process efficiency when installing on-site hydrogen refueling stations.

  • This study examined the effect of input substrate concentration on hydrogen production of microbial electrolysis cells. To compare the performance of MEC according to the input substrate concentration, six laboratory-scale MEC reactors were operated by sequentially increasing the input substrate concentration from 2 g/L of sodium acetate, to 4 g/L, and 6 g/L. The current density, hydrogen production, and SCOD removal rate were analyzed, and energy efficiency and cathodic hydrogen recovery were calculated to compare the performance of MEC. The maximum volumetric current density was obtained at 4 g/L condition (76.3 A/m3) and it decreased to 19.0 A/m3, when the input concentration was increased to 6 g/L, which was a 75% decrease compared to the 4 g/L input condition. Maximum hydrogen production was obtained also at 4 g/L condition (47.3 ± 16.8 mL), but maximum hydrogen yield was obtained at 2 g/L input condition (1.1 L H2/g CODin). Energy efficiencies were also highest in 2 g/L condition; the lowest result was observed at 6 g/L condition. Maximum electrical energy efficiency was 76.4%, and the maximum overall energy efficiency was 39.7% at 2 g/L condition. However, when the substrate concentration increased to 6 g/L, the performance was drastically decreased. Cathodic hydrogen recovery also showed a similar tendency with energy efficiency, with the lowest concentration condition showing the best performance. It can be concluded that operating at low input substrate concentration might be better when considering not only hydrogen yield but also energy efficiency.

  • In this study, the model biomass was used for hydrogen production by supercritical water gasification (SCWG). Model biomasses were glycerol, glycine, lignin and cellulose. The feed concentration was set to 1 wt%. Experiments were conducted in a reactor at $440^{\circ}C$ and above 26.3 MPa for 30 min. The effects of catalysts such as alkali metal salt ($K_2CO_3$ and $Na_2CO_3$) and transition metal salts ($Ni(NO_3)_2$, $Fe(NO_3)_3$ and $Mn(NO_3)_2$) on the gasification were systematically investigated. No tar or coke was observed in all experiments. The results showed that the gasification efficiency increased with various catalysts. For the cellulose and glycerol, all catalysts were effective for the promoted $H_2$ production compared with no catalyst. The significant decrease of $H_2$ production compared with no catalyst was observed with $Na_2CO_3$ and $Fe(NO_3)_3$ for glycine and lignin. respectively. The highest H2 production, 1.24 mmol was obtained for glycerol-SCWG with $Mn(NO_3)_2$. Conclusively, the addition of $Mn(NO_3)_2$ enhanced all model biomass gasification efficiency and increased the hydrogen production promoting the supercritical water reaction.

  • Hydrogen production can be classified based on the energy source, primary reactor type, and whether or not it emits carbon dioxide. Utilizing color representation proves to be an effective means of expressing these distinctive characteristics. Among the various clean hydrogen production techniques, there has been a growing interest in turquoise hydrogen production, which involves the decomposition of methane or other fossil fuels. This method offers advantages in terms of large-scale production and cost reduction through the sale of solid-carbon byproduct. In this study, an extensive literature review was conducted to select and analyze several promising candidates for turquoise hydrogen production processes. The efficiency and economics of these processes were evaluated using stream data reported in the literature sources. The findings indicate that the levelized cost of hydrogen production (LCOH) is significantly influenced by the sales of byproducts, specifically the solid-carbon and carbon monoxide byproducts.
