  • Hydrogen peroxide takes much of the cost for Fenton reaction applied for treatment of organic contaminants. Therefore, the effective use of hydrogen peroxide makes the technology more cost effective. The effective use of hydrogen peroxide is especially needed in the soil and groundwater remediation where complete mixing is not possible and it takes a long time for reactive species to transport to the fixed target compounds. Stabilization ability for hydrogen peroxide of malonic acid was evaluated in Fenton and Fenton-like reactions in this study. Malonic acid contributes on the stabilization of hydrogen peroxide by weak interaction between iron and the stabilizer and inhibiting the catalytic role of iron. The stabilization effect increased as the solution pH decrease below the $pK_{a1}$. The stabilization effect increased as the concentration of malonic acid increased and the effect was maximized at the malonic acid concentration of about ten times higher than the iron concentration. The model organic contaminant was successfully oxidized in the presence of the stabilizer but the degradation rate was slower than the system without the stabilizer. The stabilization effect was also proved in a Fenton-like reaction where magnetite and hematite were used instead of soluble iron species.

  • Copper has attractive properties as a multi-level interconnection material due to lower resistivity and higher electromigration resistance as compared with Alumina and its alloy with Copper(0.5%). Among a variety of agents in Copper CMP slurry, $H_2O_2$ has commonly been used as the oxidizer However. $H_2O_2$ is so unstable that it requires stabilization to use as oxidizer Hence, stabilization of $H_2O_2$ is a vital process to get better yield in practical CMP process. In this article the stability of Hydrogen Peroxide as oxidizer of Copper CMP slurry has been investigated. When alumina abrasive was used, $\gamma$-particle Alumina C had a better stability than $\alpha$-particle abrasive. As adding KOH as pH buffering agent, $H_2O_2$ stability in slurry decreased. Urea hydrogen peroxide was used as oxidizer, an enhanced stability was gotten. When $H_3PO_4$ as $H_2O_2$ stabilizer was added, the decrease of $H_2O_2$ concentration in slurry became slower. Even though adding $H_2O_2$ in slurry after bead milling lead to better stability than in advance of bead milling, it had a lower dispersibility.

  • Nowadays, the bleaching techniques of thermomechanical pulp(TMP) are fast developing on the strength of some benefits, mainly on low production cost and good fiber property. In this study, the optimum concentration of bleaching chemicals and the environmental load of bleaching wastes were considered to improve the bleaching efficiency of thermomechanical pulp using Korean redpine(Pinus densiflora) under the peroxide-based bleaching system. The optical property of TMP after bleaching was planned to use higher grade of paper, like printing & writting paper, not general newspaper. The concentration of bleaching chemicals, NaOH, $Na_2SiO_3$ and EDTA, in hydrogen peroxide bleaching system, on the basis of O.D. pulp was closely influenced on the improvement of TMP brightness. Final target of bleaching efficiency was set up to above 76%-ISO brightness. The optimal target brightness of Korean redpine TMP was reached to 76.45%-ISO under the conditions of $H_2O_2$ 7% with NaOH 2.20%, $Na_2SiO_3$ 0.63% and EDTA 0.02%. The concentration of NaOH, $Na_2SiO_3$ and EDTA was correlated functional to the residual peroxide content of wastewater, pH value and electric conductivity of TMP fibers after bleaching treatment. The optimal bleaching conditions by controlling the addition amount of chemicals were positively contributed to the brightness stabilization and environmental load of TMP.

  • This study explored the feasibility of applying Electrokinetic-Fenton process(EK-Fenton process) to remediation of contaminant sorbed on the soil possessed low-permeability. The addition of 0.01 N H$_2$SO$_4$ in the anode reservoir for the $H_2O$$_2$stabilization improved the stabilization of $H_2O$$_2$and the treatment effect of phenanthrene across the entire soil specimen. The use of $H_2O$$_2$and dilute acid as anode purging solution is a promising method treating of HOCs in low-permeability subsurface environments.

  • Effects of dimethipin on the senescence of excised barley first leaves were investigated. Dimethipin markedly inhibited chlorophyll and protein loss and reduced peroxidase activity relevant to senescence phenomena in th excised leaves. Dimethipin decreased hydrogen peroxide content, later malondialdehyde content, and increased the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase. The antisenescence effects of dimethipin may result from the stabilization of membrane structure through inhibiting the peroxidation of unsaturated lipid and the accumulation of free radicals during senescence.

  • Chemical mechanical polishing(CMP) is an essential process in the production of copper-based chips. On this work, the stability of Hydrogen Peroxide($H_2O_2$) as oxidizer of Cu CMP slurry has been investigated. $H_2O_2$ is known as the most common oxidizer in Cu CMP slurry. Copper slowly dissolves in $H_2O_2$ solutions and the interaction of $H_2O_2$ with copper surface had been studied in the literature. Because hydrogen peroxide is a weak acid in aqueous solutions, a passivation-type slurry chemistry could be achieved only with pH buffered solution.[1] Moreover, $H_2O_2$ is so unstable that its stabilization is needed using as oxidizer. As adding KOH as pH buffering agent, stability of $H_2O_2$ decreased. However, stability went up with putting in small amount of BTA as film forming agent. There was no difference of $H_2O_2$ stability between KOH and TMAH at same pH. On the other hand, $H_2O_2$ dispersion of TMAH is lower than that of KOH. Furthermore, adding $H_2O_2$ in slurry in advance of bead milling lead to better stability than adding after bead milling. Generally, various solutions of phosphoric acids result in a higher stability. Using Alumina C as abrasive was good at stabilizing for $H_2O_2$; moreover, better stability was gotten by adding $H_3PO_4$.

  • Papers made from unbleached and bleached bagasse chemimechanical pulp were chemically modified by acetylation. The effects of irradiation on unbleached and bleached also reduced papers of bagasse chemimechanical pulp before and after acetylation were investigated in this study. Chemimechanical pulp was prepared from bagasse and then bleached with hydrogen peroxide. Unbleached and hydrogen bleached pulps were reduced by Sodium borohydride in different procedures. Paper sheets were prepared from pulps and then acetylated using a technical grade of acetic anhydride. Accelerated photo-aging was run on the samples using fluorescent lamps to verify photo-stability of paper sheets before and after pretreatments. Brightness reversion (as Post-color number) and other optical properties of the paper sheets were measured. Efficient inhibition of photo-yellowing of papers made from bagasse CMP was achieved by acetylation. The acetylated unbleached CMP was noticeably photo-bleached during irradiation. Sodium borohydride reduction followed by acetylation had the same effect as acetylation alone at the same degree of reaction time and reductive treatment did not affect the yellowing rate to any great extent. The pre-reduced, acetylated unbleached papers were, however, not brightened during irradiation. Calculation done by Kubelka-Munk equation showed that reductive treatment had little effect in reducing the photo-yellowing of paper made from CMP pulp; a small stabilization effect was observed in the case of bleached CMP, while unbleached CMP was slightly more prone to discolor in the later phase of photo-reversion. The improved stability towards light may was closely related to the decrease in the phenolic hydroxyl content as a result of blocking by acetyl groups during treatment with acetic anhydride. The results support the hypothesis that phenolic hydroxyl has an important role in the process of photo-reversion of high-yield pulps. The results obtained in this study demonstrate that the acetylation of paper manufactured from peroxide bleached Bagasse CMP significantly retards light-induced discoloration. The inhibition of yellowing is connected with a decrease in the phenolic hydroxyl content of both unbleached and peroxide bleached papers.

  • Veratryl alcohol which has been reported as an inducer for lignin peroxidase showed different effects on the enzyme biosynthesis in Phanerochaete chrysosporium depending on the addition time. Enzyme expression was optimally induced by adding veratryl alcohol when the carbon source began to be depleted. Hydrogen peroxide, to some extent, stimulated production of lignin peroxidase, but beyond a certain concentration, inactivated lignin peroxidase. Tween 80 induced the formation of small pellets, which were resistant to the deactivation by shear stress. Lignin peroxidase production was increased twice compared with that of the control by adopting all the optimal factors in the culture system.

  • Chondrocyte apoptosis has been recognized as an important factor in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA). Hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$), which produces reactive oxygen species, reportedly induces apoptosis in chondrocytes. The ginsenoside $Rb_1$ (G-$Rb_1$) is the principal component in ginseng and has been shown to have a variety of biological activities, such as anti-arthritis, anti-inflammation, and anti-tumor activities. In this study, we evaluated the effects of G-$Rb_1$ on the mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT) and caspase-3 activity of chondrocyte apoptosis induced by $H_2O_2$. Cultured rat articular chondrocytes were exposed to $H_2O_2$ with or without G-$Rb_1$ and assessed for viability, MPT, Bcl-xL/Bax expression, caspase-3 activity, and apoptosis. The co-treatment with G-$Rb_1$ showed an inhibition of MPT, caspase-3 activity, and cell death. Additionally, the levels of the apoptotic protein Bax were significantly lower and the levels of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-xL were higher compared with $H_2O_2$ treatment alone. The results of this study demonstrate that G-$Rb_1$ protects chondrocytes against $H_2O_2$-induced apoptosis, at least in part via the inhibition of MPT and caspase-3 activity. These results demonstrate that G-$Rb_1$ is a potentially useful drug for the treatment of OA patients.
