  • Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles are typically refueled at a wide range of temperatures (-40℃ to 85℃) in the hydrogen refueling station in accordance with the worldwide accepted standard. Currently, there is no traceable method by which to verify and calibrate the hydrogen flowmeters to be used at hydrogen refueling stations except for a water calibration process as a conventional method. KRISS hydrogen field test standard based on the gravimetric principle was developed to verify the measurement accuracy of the mass flowmeter to be used at hydrogen refueling stations for the first time in Korea.

  • A direct hydrogen liquefaction equipment has been developed and tested, which consists of a GM refrigerator, a liquefaction vessel, a radiation shield, a cryostat, and an ortho-para converter with catalyst. The effect of ortho-para hydrogen conversion on the performance of hydrogen liquefaction has been investigated. The time needed for the hydrogen liquefaction process with hydrogen pressure charge of 4 atm was delayed to around 75 minutes, and the liquefied mass flow rate of the hydrogen was about 0.0150∼ 0.0205 g/s when the hydrogen was liquefied with the direct hydrogen liquefaction system considering ortho-para conversion. With ortho-para conversion, the liquefied mass flow rate decreased up to 20%. Considering ortho-para conversion, there were up to 30% increase in the work input per unit liquefied mass flow rate. When the ortho-para conversion was considered, FOM decreased to be about 0.031∼0.045.

  • Numerical analysis information will be very useful to improve fluid system. General information about an internal gas flow is presented by numerical analysis approach. Relating with hydrogen compressing system, which have an important role in hydrogen energy utilization, this should be a useful tool to observe the flow quickly and clearly. Flow characteristic analysis, including pressure and turbulence kinetic energy distribution of hydrogen gas coming to the cylinder of a reciprocating compressor are presented in this paper. Suction-passage model is designed based on real model of hydrogen compressor. Pressure boundary conditions are applied considering the real condition of operating system. The result shows pressure and turbulence kinetic energy are not distributed uniformly along the passage of the Hydrogen system. Path line or particles tracks help to demonstrate flow characteristics inside the passage. The existence of vortices and flow direction can be precisely predicted. Based on this result, the design improvement, such as reducing the varying flow parameters and flow reorientation should be done. Consequently, development of the better hydrogen compressing system will be achieved.

  • This study is focused on the channel design of bipolar plate in the electrode of hydrogen gas generator. The characteristics of hydrogen gas generation was studied in view of efficiency of hydrogen gas generation rate and a tendency of gas flow through the riv design of electrode. Since the flow rate and flow pattern of generated gas in the two phase flow system are the most crucial in determining the efficiency of hydrogen gas generator, we adopted the commercial analytical program of COMSOL MultiphysicsTM to calculate the theoretical flow rate of hydrogen gas from the outlet of gas generator and flow pattern of two phase fluid in the electrode. In this study, liquid electrolyte flows into the bipolar plate and decomposed into gas phase, two phase flow simulation is applied to measure the efficiency of hydrogen gas generation.

  • Global efforts to reduce carbon emissions have focused attention on the development of hydrogen energy and the development of various hydrogen mobility requires mobile hydrogen charging stations. In this study, the flow characteristics of the flow control hydrogen valve for mobile hydrogen charging equipment were studied according to the temperature change of hydrogen gas. The inlet pressure was 100 MPa, the outlet pressure to 70 MPa, and temperature condition was set -40℃ to 85℃. As a result, the difference in the valve flow coefficient, which determines the capacity of the valve, showed a difference within 5% depending on the temperature.

  • Needle valves are instrumentation devices with quick-opening inherent flow characteristics, used in pipelines requiring rapid flow supply immediately upon opening the flow path. For needle valves applied in liquefied hydrogen plants operating in cryogenic environments, it is necessary from the initial design stage to have various inherent flow characteristics in addition to quick-opening, depending on the intended usage. In this study, the inherent flow characteristics of a 1/2'' liquid hydrogen needle valve were evaluated through computational fluid dynamics analysis. Disk shapes exhibiting various inherent flow characteristics were proposed by deriving the flow coefficient (Cv) according to changes in disk shapes. Among the disk shapes that directly affect the Cv, the disk length and slope angle were selected, and case studies were conducted with nine parameter combinations. From the results of the normalized Cv regarding to opening rates, disk lengths and slope angles exhibiting quick-opening, equal-percentage, and linear inherent flow characteristics were determined.

  • In this paper, numerical analysis of hydrogen recycle system has been conducted in order to enhance the efficiency of automotive fuel cell. Generally, the excess hydrogen is provided in the automotive fuel cell. Since the non-reaction hydrogen reduces automotive fuel cell efficiency, reuse of the non-reaction hydrogen can be helpful to improve the fuel cell performance. In case of PEM FC, the water vapor is provided to hydrogen from the cathode so that the mixture experiences phase change depending on the changes of pressure and temperature. The internal flow of the mixture in the hydrogen recirculation system of fuel cell was investigated for real flow conditions. The variation of performance, properties and mass fractions of mixture, hydrogen and water-vapor were investigated. This study was performed based on 80KW level automotive fuel cell's recycling system.

  • The pyrolysis reactions of atomic hydrogen with chloroform were studied In a 4 cm 1.6. tubular flow reactor with low flow velocity 1518 cm/sec and a 2.6 cm 1.4. tubular flow reactor with high flow velocity (1227 cm/sec). The hydrogen atom concentration was measured by chemiluminescence titration with nitrogen dioxide, and the chloroform concentrations were determined using a gas chromatography. The chloroform conversion efficiency depended on both the chloroform flow rate and linear flow velocity, but 416 not depend on the flow rate of hydrogen atom. A computer model was employed to estimate a rate constant for the initial reaction of atomic hydrogen with chloroform. The model consisted of a scheme for chloroform-hydrogen atom reaction, Runge-Kutta 4th-order method for Integration of first-order differential equations describing the time dependence of the concentrations of various chemical species, and Rosenbrock method for optimization to match model and experimental results. The scheme for chloroform-hydrogen atom reaction Included 22 elementary reactions. The rate constant estimated using the data obtained from the 2.6 cm 1.4. reactor was to be 8.1 $\times$ $10^{-14}$ $cm^3$/molecule-sec and 3.8 $\times$ $10^{-15}$ cms/molecule-sec, and the deviations of computer model from experimental results were 9% and 12% , for the each reaction time of 0.028 sec and 0.072 sec, respectively.
