  • Biofiltration of polluted gas streams contained $H_2S$ was studied. The experiments were performed in a laboratory-scale reactor with a porous ceramic media inoculated with sulfur oxidizing bacterium, TAS which was isolated from activiated sludge. The concentration of $H_2S$ in the inlet gas varied from 109 to 3,841 ppm, at the various space velocities(SV) of 50 $h^{-1}$ to 250 $h^{-1}$. Various tests have been conducted to evaluate the effects of such parameters as pH, concentration of sulfate ion and retention time on the pressure drop and maximum elimination capacity. The removal efficiency of $H_2S$ decreased as the $H_2S$ concentration or gas velocity increased in the inlet gas. Pressure drop was insignificant in this system. The maximum elimination capacity could reach up to 16.35g-S/kg-dry packing material/day.

  • The impregnated activated carbons were prepared by the incipient wetness method with the contents of $KIO_3$ varied from 1.0${\sim}$10 wt% as the impregnation material. The specific surface area and micropore volume of the rice hulls activated carbon were $2,600{\sim}2,800$ $m^2$/g and 1.1${\sim}$1.4 cc/g, respectively. With increasing the contents of impregnation materials, the surface area and micropore volume decreased by 3${\sim}$21%. However, The amounts of hydrogen sulfide adsorbed increased by 2.1${\sim}$2.8 times depending on the impregnation content. The optimum contents of $KIO_3$ were 2.4 wt%. Although the breakthrough time and adsorption capacity of hydrogen sulfide decreased with increasing temperature in the case of the unimpregnated activated carbons, they increased by 1.2${\sim}$ 3.2 times for the case of the impregnated activated carbons. The optimum aspect ratio(L/D) was 1.0 and the adsorption amount of hydrogen sulfide enhanced with increasing the gas flow rate. The regeneration temperature was determined as 400$^{\circ}C$ from the TGA experiment. The adsorption capacity of hydrogen sulfide with the impregnated activated carbon decreased gradually as the regeneration continued. The hydrogen sulfide adsorption amount of the regenerated activated carbon up to 4 times was still higher than that of the unimpregnated activated carbon.

  • Prior to utilization of energy and power generation, the biogas from anaerobic digestion of sewage treatment plant(46,000㎡/d) should be purified particularly hydrogen sulfide among the various kinds of impurities. This study has focused on the methane decreasing rate and the removal of both hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide. In the case of partial circulation, 59.7% of methane gas was decreased to 57.4% in spite of oxidation process with micro-bubble. Carbon dioxide was removed from 38% to 32% and 76.1% of hydrogen sulfide was removed where 1,400ppm was introduced to the DIWS system, which indicated that DIWS system can be of use for the hydrogen sulfide removal of biogas from sewage treatment plant.

  • In this study, the concentrations of reduced S compounds (including hydrogen sulfide (H$_2$S); methyl mercaptan ($CH_3$SH); dimethyl sulfide (($CH_3$)$_2$S); carbon disulfide (CS$_2$); and dimethyl disulfide (($CH_3$)$_2$S$_2$) were determined from landfill gas (LFG) in three municipal landfill sites in the two cities of Gwang Ju (GJ) and Jeju (JJ), Korea. The S gas concentrations measured in these landfill sites were found to be dominated by H$_2$S with its mean concentration of 850 ppm from 10 LFG samples. Both absolute and relative dominance of H$_2$S was seen to be significant in most LFG samples, except those collected from very old and inactive landfills. Unlike the pattern of H$_2$S, other S gases were typically observed at much reduced concentration levels (a few ppm or less) as follows: DMS (3.5); $CH_3$SH (1.3); CS$_2$(1.2); and DMDS (0.02 ppm). If compared equally in mass concentration unit (mg m$^{-3}$ ), H$_2$S generally explained far above 90% of all S gas masses determined concurrently. Moreover, as its mass concentration commonly exceeds those of the major aromatic VOC components in LFG (like benzene and toluene), it appeared to be one of the most dominant gaseous components emitted as LFG in a quantitative sense.

  • In this study, we focused on typically problematic sulfide compounds Gas samples were captured at Unjung-ding landfill site in Metropolitan Kwangju with flux chamber and floating chamber, and analyzed for the amount of hydrogen sulfide($H_2S$), dimethyl sulfide $((CH_3)_2S)$ and dimethyl disulfide$((CH_3)_2S_2)$. From the gas pipe, landfill surface and leachate treatment plant, estimated total amount of $H_2S$ emission are 12.6ton/yr, 0.01ton/yr and 1.04ton/yr; estimated total amount of $((CH_3)_2S)$ 30.7ton/yr, 0.08ton/yr and 1.72ton/yr; and estimated total amount of ($((CH_3)_2S_2)$ 2.2tom/yr, 0.02ton/yr and 1.03ton/yr, respectively. Further in-depth study on co-relation between age, packing characteristics, temperature and humidity of landfill site and gas emission characteristics is needed.

  • Organophosphorous compounds can be reduced by zinc metal in acidic solution after alkaline hydrolysis. Although phosphates and phosphonates did not evolve any gas, dithioates did evolve hydrogen sulfide and phosphine, thionates and thiolates did evolve only hydrogen sulfide. The evolved gases were qualitatively detected by means of lead acetate and silver nitrate or mercuric bromide papers and determined by spectrophotometrically. The reduction mechanism and analytical method of dithioates were proposed.

  • The objective of the research project is to develop the hybrid deodorizer for the removal of residual harmful gases generating during pretreatment process of biogas. This hybrid deodorizer is capable of treating harmful gases that contains hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$), ammonia ($NH_3$) and other odor substances. This hybrid deodorizer reduced the hydrogen sulfide content from approximately 150~200 ppm to less than 16 ppm. These residual harmful gases were effectively removed in the effluent, achieving up to 97% removal of $H_2S$ and 94% removal of $NH_3$ after treatment using hybrid deodorizer.

  • In this study, we investigated the analytical techniques to quantify the ambient concentration of hydrogen sulfide (H$_2$S) in air at ppt concentration level. For this purpose, an on-line GC analytical system equipped with both pulsed-flame photometric detector (PFPD) and thermal desorption unit (TDU) was investigated by collecting ambient air samples. The results of our study generally indicated that calibration conditions of GC system is highly sensitive to affect the accuracy of the analytical technique. Most importantly. we found that the use of different matrices in the the preparation stage of working standards was sensitive to control the overall performance of this technique. The calibration of our analytical system was tested by the two types of working standard (prepared by mixing either with high purity $N_2$ or with the ambient air). According to this test, the latter represented more efficiently the detecting conditions of actual air samples. The peak occurrence patterns of both air samples and standards (prepared by mixing with ambient air) were altered in a similar manner as the function of the loaded volume; however, it was not the case for the $N_2$-mixed standards. Results of our study suggest that detection of H$_2$S is highly different from other sulfides and that its quantification requires minimiaing interfering effects of non -pure substance (like water vapor) and (either sorptive or destructive) loss effects.

  • In order to assess its capability as biofilter bed material under variable conditions of two parameters (inlet gas concentration and inlet gas flow rate), reticulated polyurethan was applied to remove hydrogen sulfide via a biological process. We detected a maximal elimination capacity (critical loading rate) of $488.3(330.1)g-H_2S/m^3{\cdot}hr$, when reticulated polyurethane was employed as supporting material of biofilter. This study show that the application of reticulated polyurethane carrier might be a favorable choice as a packing material in biofilter for the biological removal of hydrogen sulfide.
