Gasoline direct injection(GDI) engine has a high thermal efficiency, but it has a problem to increase carbon emissions such as soot and $CO_x$. In this study, the objective is to analyze numerically a problem for adding the hydrogen during the intake stroke so as to reduce the injected amount of gasoline in GDI engines. For selection of the base model, the cylinder pressure of simulation is matched to experimental data. The numerical analysis are carried out by a CFD model with the hydrogen addition of 2%, 3% and 4% on the volume basis. In the case of 3% hydrogen addition, the injected gasoline amount is only changed to match the maximum pressure of simulation to that of the base model for additional study. It is found that the combustion temperature and pressure increase with the hydrogen addition. And NO emission also increases because of the higher combustion temperature. $CO_x$ emissions, however, are reduced due to the decrease of injected gasoline amount. Also, as the injected gasoline amount is reduced for the same hydrogen addition ratio, the gross indicated work is no significant, But NO and $CO_x$ emissions are considerably decreased. On the order hand, $CO_x$ emissions of two cases are more decreased and their gross indicated works are higher obtained than those of the base model.
In the present study, catalytic combustion of hydrogen-air premixture in a millimeter scale monolith coated with Pt catalyst was investigated. As the combustor size decreases, the heat loss increases in proportion with the inverse of the scale of combustion chamber and combustion efficiency decreases in a conventional type of combustor. Combustion reaction assisted by catalyst can reduce the heat loss by decreasing the reaction temperature at which catalytic conversion takes place. Another advantage of catalytic combustion is that ignition is not required. Platinum was coated by incipient wetness method on a millimeter scale monolith with cell size of $1{\times}1mm$. Using this monolith as the core of the reaction chamber, temperatures were recorded at various locations along the flow direction. Burnt gas was passed to a gas chromatography system to measure the hydrogen content after the reaction. The measurements were made at various volume flow rate of the fuel-air premixture. The gas chromatography results showed the reaction was complete at all the test conditions and the reacting species penetrated the laminar boundary layer at the honeycomb and made contact with the catalyst coated surface. At all the measuring locations, the record showed monotonous increase of temperature during the measurement duration. And the temperature profile showed that the peak temperature is reached at the point nearest to the gas inlet and decreasing temperature along the flow direction.
A model combustor has been designed and fabricated for studying the combustion characteristics of oxygen (O2)/hydrogen (H2) flames under supercritical conditions. The combustor is designed to allow combustion experiments up to 60 bar, the supercritical pressure condition of O2 and H2. Injectors can be replaced to study various types of flames and the combustion chamber is designed to visualize flames by installing optical windows. Through the preliminary tests, including a high-pressure (up to 60 bar) test using air and combustion tests for coaxial jet flames of liquid oxygen (LO2)/gaseous hydrogen (GH2) at elevated pressure, the reliability of the combustor has been demonstrated.
The main purpose of this work is to test the validation of use of a four step reaction mechanism to simulate the laminar speed of hydrogen enriched methane flame. The laminar velocities of hydrogen-methane-air mixtures are very important in designing and predicting the progress of combustion and performance of combustion systems where hydrogen is used as fuel. In this work, laminar flame velocities of different composition of hydrogen-methane-air mixtures (from 0% to 40% hydrogen) have been calculated for variable equivalence ratios (from 0.5 to 1.5) using the flame propagation module (FSC) of the chemical kinetics software Chemkin 4.02. Our results were tested against an extended database of laminar flame speed measurements from the literature and good agreements were obtained especially for fuel lean and stoichiometric mixtures for the whole range of hydrogen blends. However, in the case of fuel rich mixtures, a slight overprediction (about 10%) is observed. Note that this overprediction decreases significantly with increasing hydrogen content. This research demonstrates that reduced chemical kinetics mechanisms can well reproduce the laminar burning velocity of methane-hydrogen-air mixtures at lean and stoichiometric mixture flame for hydrogen content in the fuel up to 40%. The use of such reduced mechanisms in complex combustion device can reduce the available computational resources and cost because the number of species is reduced.
Comparison of the combustion characteristics of methane-air and gasoline-air mixtures has been conducted experimentally by a spherical bomb technique. The results indicate 1) the burning velocity of gasoline is slightly higher than that of methane, but their basic behavior of combustion characteristics, positive dependence on temperature and negative one on pressure, are the same, and 2) 20 vol.% addition of hydrogen to methane enhances the burning velocity by about 30%, but does not come to reverse the tendency of pressure dependence to that of pure hydrogen.
The combustion characteristics of a partially premixed flame in a dump combustor were studied to determine the effects of hydrogen enrichment in propane. Bluff-body was used for flame stabilization. Fuel mixtures containing a hydrogen mole fraction ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 were burnt at ambient pressure within a quartz chamber. Tests were carried out keeping the total reactant flow rate by adjusting the fuel and air flow rates. The fluctuations of pressure were measured by piezoelectric pressure sensor. The instantaneous flame structure and OH chemiluminescence images were described by High-speed Intensified Charged Coupled Device (HICCD) camera and Intensified Charged Coupled Device (ICCD) camera. The present results show that hydrogen enrichment in fuel changed the location of primary reaction zone from inner recirculation zone to turbulent shear layer and pressure signal. The reason is that chemical aspects take precedence over flow aspects in the hydrogen-enriched flame.
The use of fossil is causing enviromental all over the world. So hydrogen energy is attracting attention as one of the alternative. The government announced that 30% of the air pollution is because of the Internal Combustion Engine Vehicle. In addition, they plans to reduce Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles by 2030 and increase (electric vehicles, EV) or (fuel cell vehicle, FCV). The FCV is evaluated as a next-generation green car because it has a long driving distance and short charging time. However, the hydrogen industry is not able to expand due to the lack of refueling infrastrucutre. This paper predicts the site of hydrogen refueling stations for the expansion of the hydrogen industry and proposes a method to supply hydrogen multi energy filling stations.
During the course of a severe accident in a light water nuclear reactor, large amounts of hydrogen can be generated and released into the containment during reactor core degradation. Additional burnable gases [hydrogen ($H_2$) and carbon monoxide (CO)] may be released into the containment in the corium/concrete interaction. This could subsequently raise a combustion hazard. As the Fukushima accidents revealed, hydrogen combustion can cause high pressure spikes that could challenge the reactor buildings and lead to failure of the surrounding buildings. To prevent the gas explosion hazard, most mitigation strategies adopted by European countries are based on the implementation of passive autocatalytic recombiners (PARs). Studies of representative accident sequences indicate that, despite the installation of PARs, it is difficult to prevent at all times and locations, the formation of a combustible mixture that potentially leads to local flame acceleration. Complementary research and development (R&D) projects were recently launched to understand better the phenomena associated with the combustion hazard and to address the issues highlighted after the Fukushima Daiichi events such as explosion hazard in the venting system and the potential flammable mixture migration into spaces beyond the primary containment. The expected results will be used to improve the modeling tools and methodology for hydrogen risk assessment and severe accident management guidelines. The present paper aims to present the methodology adopted by Institut de Radioprotection et de $S{\hat{u}}ret{\acute{e}}$$Nucl{\acute{e}}aire$ to assess hydrogen risk in nuclear power plants, in particular French nuclear power plants, the open issues, and the ongoing R&D programs related to hydrogen distribution, mitigation, and combustion.
Lean premixed combustion is a well known method for low $NO_x$ gas turbine combustor. But lean combustion is usually accompanied by flame instability. To overcome this problem, the hydrogen ($H_2$) was added to main fuel methane to increase flammable limit. In this paper, the effects of hydrogen addition on lean premixed combustion of methane ($CH_4$) were investigated numerically. Results showed that the extinction stretch rate increases and the extinction temperature constant with relatively small amount of $H_2$ addition. The flame temperature and NO emission increase with $H_2$ addition at the same stretch rate and equivalence ratio but it could increase the range of lean extinction and extinction equivalence ratio limit. Eventually, the $H_2$ addition case showed almost same or lower NO emission than no addictive $CH_4$ case in the extinction condition.
