  • This study discussed the trend and future strategy of adsorption technology R&D to effectively recover ammonia emitted from the livestock fields. A proper ammonia adsorbent should incorporate acidic or hydrogen bonding functional groups on the surface, as well as a high specific surface area and a good surface structure appropriate for ammonia adsorption. Activated carbon and minerals such as zeolite have widely been used as ammonia adsorbents, but their adsorption effects are generally low, so any improvement through surface modification should be necessary. For example, incorporation of metal chloride included in a porous adsorbent can promote ammonia adsorption effectiveness. Recently, new types of adsorbents such as MOFs (Metal-Organic Frameworks) and POPs (Porous Organic Polymers) have been developed and utilized. They have shown very high ammonia adsorption capacity because of adjustable and high specific surface area and porosity. In addition, Prussian Blue exhibited high ammonia adsorption and desorption performance and selectivity. This looks relatively advantageous in relation to the recovery of ammonia from livestock waste discharge. In the future, further research should be made to evaluate ammonia adsorption/desorption efficiency and purity using various adsorbents under conditions suitable for livestock sites. Also, effective pre- and/or post-treatment processes should be integrated to maximize ammonia recovery.

  • The dissociation and partial oxidation of $CH_3OH$ on polycrystalline $MoO_3$ powder catalyst were studied using thermal desorption spectrometry(TDS) under high vacuum condition. $CH_3OH$ was dissociatively adsorbed on $MoO_3$ in the forms of surface methoxy($-OCH_3$) and atomic hydrogen(-H). $CH_3OH$ desorbed at 425 K via the re-association of methoxy and adsorbed hydrogen atom, and HCHO desorbed at 545 K through the bond breakage of C-H in methoxy. Water TDS spectra showed two desorption peaks, that is, ${\alpha}$-peak at 428 K and ${\beta}$-peak at 586 K. It was suggested that ${\alpha}$-peak was due to the hydroxyl formed on $MoO_3$ surface during the dissociation of $CH_3OH$, and that ${\beta}$-peak was from the association of lattice oxygen and surface hydrogen atom formed by the bond breakage of C-H in methoxy. Pre-adsorbed oxygen on the surface of $MoO_3$ catalyst increased the amount of adsorption of $CH_3OH$ by promoting the dissociation of $CH_3OH$ on the surface, whereas pre-adsorbed water decreased the amount of adsorption of $CH_3OH$ by blocking of adsorption sites for $CH_3OH$.

  • This work is investigated for the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen iodide (HI). Platinum was used as active material by loading on $ZrO_2-SiO_2$ mixed oxide in HI decomposition reaction. To obtain high and stable conversion of hydrogen iodide in severe condition, it was required to improve catalytic activity. For this reason, a method increasing dispersion of platinum was proposed in this study. In order to get high dispersion of platinum, zirconia was incorporated in silica by sol-gel synthesis. Incorporating zirconia influence increasing platinum dispersion and BET surface area as well as decreasing deactivation of catalysts. It should be able to stably product hydrogen for a long time because of inhibitive deactivation. HI decomposition reaction was carried out under the condition of $450^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm in a fixed bed reactor. Catalysts analysis methods such as $N_2$ adsorption/desorption analysis, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, ICP-AES and CO gas chemisorption were used to measurement of their physico-chemical properties.

  • The present work explores the effect of carbon-supported platinum catalyst on the HI decomposition using gas adsorption analyzer, thermogravimetry, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, and gas chromatography. For this purpose, three types of activated carbon (C), Pt/C-1 wt.%, and Pt/C-5 wt.% were prepared. The HI gas conversion is crucially influenced by the amount of Pt on the carbon support. The more the amount of Pt was, the higher results in the HI gas conversion. For three types of catalysts, HI conversion increased with increasing the decomposition temperature but with decreasing the space velocity. The increase of HI conversion with temperature was more pronounced in activated carbon than that in Pt/C. From EDX result, it was found that the activated carbon comprised higher amount of iodine than the Pt/C after the decomposition reaction. This implies that the HI conversion is closely related to the amount of Iodine.

  • This study deals with a process for recovering hydrogen isotopes from fusion exhaust gas. The goal of this process is to remove impurities, maximally recover only pure hydrogen isotopes. Experiments using hydrogen and deuterium were conducted to confirm the possibility of the recovery of hydrogen isotopes. In the exhaust gas containing H2, impurities was removed in the membrane process, and only pure H2 was recovered. And the H2 in the exhaust gas of the He-GDC(Glow Discharge Cleaning) process was recovered using a cryogenic adsorption process. In addition, HAZOP analysis was performed for qualitative risk assessment. For scenario analysis, the damage prediction ALOHA program was used to calculate the range of influence. Finally measures were sought to improve safety.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the applicability of a manhole-filter odor eliminator that is installed on a manhole to remove hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) contained in the sewage of urban streets; $H_2S$ is the very cause of offensive odor from such sewage. An analysis of the capability of impregnated activated carbon, which is contained in the manhole filter, to adsorb hydrogen sulfide shows that some 99.8% of hydrogen sulfide can be removed. A performance evaluation of the manhole-filter odor eliminator, which was made on Manhole Section 4 known as the representative malodorous manhole section of Seoul, Korea, indicates that more than 97% of hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$), one of typical malodor-generating substances, can be eliminated. The results and findings of the study as described above suggest that the applicability of the manhole-filter odor eliminator to eliminate offensive odor generated from sewer manholes is satisfactory.

  • The use of fossil fuels is a major contributor to the increase atmospheric greenhouse gas emissions. As such problems arise, interest in new and renewable energy devices, particularly fuel cells, is greatly increasing. In this study, various characteristics of mixed strains were observed in wastewater collected by the Jeonju Environment Office to investigate the effects of microorganisms on voltage generation and voltage generation of substrates, electrode materials, electrons, electron transport media, and ash microbial fuel cells. As a result of separately measuring the voltage generated during inoculation, the inoculation voltage of Escherichia coli K12 (E. coli K12) was 0.45 V, and the maximum inoculation voltage of the mixed strain was 1.2 V. Thereafter, voltage values were collected using a digital multimeter and the amount of voltage generated over time was measured. In the case of E. coli K12, the maximum voltage reached 0.45 V, and the cell voltage was maintained above 0.23 V for 140 hours. In contrast, for the mixed strain, the maximum voltage reached 1.2 V and the voltage was slowly decreased to 0.97 V. In addition, the degree of microbial adsorption to the electrod surface after the inoculation test was confirmed using a scanning electron microscope. Therefore, these results showed the possibility of purifying pollutants at the same time as power generation through the production of hydrogen ions using microorganisms and wastewater.

  • The electronic and adsorption structure of o-phthalaldehyde (OPA) on the H-Si(100) surface was investigated by using Near Edge X-ray Fine Structure (NEXAFS) and high resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES). We confirmed that the OPA grown on the H-Si(100) surface showed good dependency with about 60 degree tilting angle using NEXAFS and a single O 1s peak by using HRPES. Hydrogen atom passivated on the Si(100) surface was found to be a seed for making one dimensional organic line that uses a chain reaction as the H-Si(100) surface was compared with the hydrogen free Si(100) surface.

  • There is a worldwide interest In the development and commercialization of PEMFCs for vehicular and stationary applications. The major problem in the practical use of PEMFCs is the deactivation of the Pt anode electrocatalyst by the adsorption of carbon monoxide. Therefore, intensive work has been devoted to finding electrocatalysts that are tolerant to CO in hydrogen at operating temperatures bellow $100^{\circ}C$. Also, DMFC is considered to be one of the most promising technologies for energy generation. But, the most important problem associated with the DMFC is the slow reaction rate of methanol oxidation and the second major problem is fuel crossover. So, the performance of a state-of-the-art DMFC is considerably lower than that of hydrogen-fuelled PEMFC. In this research, the preparation and characterization of electrode materials will be introduced. Also, some electrochemical techniques for the characterization of PEMFCs will be presented.
