Hydrofoil is the direct component to generate thrust for underwater glider. It is significant to improve propulsion efficiency of hydrofoil. This study optimizes the shape of a hydrofoil using Free-Form Deformation (FFD) parametric approach and Surrogate-based Optimization (SBO) algorithm. FFD approach performs a volume outside the hydrofoil and the position changes of control points in the volume parameterize hydrofoil's geometric shape. SBO with adaptive parallel sampling method is regarded as a promising approach for CFD-based optimization. Combination of existing sampling methods is being widely used recently. This paper chooses several well-known methods for combination. Investigations are implemented to figure out how many and which methods should be included and the best combination strategy is provided. As the hydrofoil can be stretched from airfoil, the optimizations are carried out on a 2D airfoil and a 3D hydrofoil, respectively. The lift-drag ratios are compared among optimized and original hydrofoils. Results show that both lift-drag-ratios of optimized hydrofoils improve more than 90%. Besides, this paper preliminarily explores the optimization of hydrofoil with root-tip-ratio. Results show that optimizing 3D hydrofoil directly achieves slightly better results than 2D airfoil.
The motion of birds and insects have been studied and applied to MAV(Micro Air Vehicle) and AUV(Autonomous Underwater Vehicle). Most of AUV research is focused on shape and motion of single hydrofoil. However, double hydrofoil system is mostly used in real physics. This system shows completely different hydrodynamic characteristic to single hydrofoil because of wake interaction. The goal of this study is define the trajectory of wake interaction in double hydrofoil system. Moreover, trust and efficiency of various combined motion will be demonstrated. Symmetry airfoil is used for analysis an hydrodynamic characteristic. Forward wing's plunging and pitching motion is fixed, hide wing's Heaving ratio, Pitch phase shift from forward plunging and Heaving shift is changed. This study provide necessary basic data of motion optimization for double hydrofoil system.

Most of the recent for the flow field hydrofoil in partially cavitating condition are the ones which are linearized, and the problem of cavity end region for hydrofoil is not verified. This paper deals with a study on characteristics of end region flow field for partially cavitating hydrofoil by using a characteristics of shear turbulence flow and nonlinear cavity flow theory. The results obtained as follows : 1) Shear layer thickness is decreased gradually going to the end section of hydrofoil. When attack angle is large, it is appeared largely at the region of partial cavitation after its collapsing. 2) The fluctuation velocity of a second-degree relative direction have minimum value at the front of hydrofoil or at the end of hydrofoil. The difference for the validity of attack angle is appeared largely at the surrounding of .chi.$_{e}$ point. 3) The fluctuation velocity of transverse direction decrease from the maximum thickness of cavitation to the end of hydrofoil, but it undergoes largely the effect of pressure recovery. The difference is larger at the region of partial cavitation after its collapsing than at the of hydrofoil. 4) The distribution of Reynolds stress have maximum values at the region of partial cavitation after its collapsing and the end of foil, and the larger attack angle, the larger the distribution of value.e.

Performance of a NACA 634-021 hydrofoil in motion under and in close proximity of a free surface for a large range of angles of attack is studied. Lift and drag coefficients of the hydrofoil at different submergence depths are investigated both numerically and experimentally, for 0° ≤ AoA ≤ 30° at a Reynolds number of 105. The results of the numerical study are in good agreement with the experimental results. The agreement confirms the new finding that for a submerged hydrofoil operating at high angles of attack close to a free surface, the interaction between the hydrofoil-motion induced waves on the free surface and the hydrofoil results in mitigation of the flow separation characteristics on the suction side of the foil and delay in stall, and improvement in hydrofoil performance. In comparing with a baseline case, results suggest a 55% increase in maximum lift coefficient and 90% average improvement in performance for, based on the lift-to-drag ratio, but it is also observed significant decrease of lift-to-drag ratio at lower angles of attack. Flow details obtained from combined finite volume and volume of fluid numerical methods provide insight into the underlying enhancement mechanism, involving interaction between the hydrofoil and the free surface.

The steady potential flow about a TP 620 hydrofoil, flying in air above a dynamic water surface. is calculated by the one dimensional theory as the clearance-to-length ratio tends to very small. The characteristics on water surfare effects of air supported TP 620 hydrofoil over water are compared NACA 4412, NACA 66 and plate. respectively. It is found that using the TP 620 hydrofoil is superior lift coefficients. Moreover for trailing edge shape of the hydrofoil, high lift coefficients at 1 Fmn can be obtained.
The proposed study aims to numerically investigate the performance of hydrofoils in the context of amphibious aircraft application. In particular, we also study the effectiveness of a slotted hydrofoil in minimizing the cavitation phenomenon, to improve the overall water take-off performance of an amphibious aircraft. We use the ICON A5 as a base model for this study. First, we propose an approach to estimate the required hydrofoil surface area and to select the most suitable airfoil shape that can minimize cavitation, thus improving the hydrodynamic efficiency. Once the hydrofoil is selected, we perform 2D numerical studies of the hydrodynamic and cavitating characteristics of a non-slotted hydrofoil on ANSYS Fluent. In this work, we also propose to use a slotted hydrofoil to be a passive method to control the cavitation performance through the boundary layer control. Numerical results of several slotted configurations demonstrate notable improvement on the cavitation performance. We then perform a multiobjective optimization with a response surface model to simultaneously minimize the cavitation and maximize the hydrodynamic efficiency of the hydrofoil. The optimization takes the slot geometry, including the slot angle and lengths, as the design variables. In addition, a global sensitivity study has been carried and it shows that the slot widths are the more dominant factors.

The author has presented a new approach to design hydrofoil section shapes in consideration of viscous for marine propeller blades. In suction sides of propeller blades, the pressure distribution on hydrofoil sections in non-cavitating flow should be examined before the study of cavitation characteristics. Generally, the calculation results for hydrofoil conformal mapping method by which neglect viscous effects do not agree with experimental ones. Moreover, another papers reported that laminar separation bubble and transition played an important role on the cavitation inception. From these considerations, it is very important to study the viscous effects of the hydrofoil sections, especially the mechanism separation bubble and the apparent thickness of hydrofoil section. Therefore, the new design method of hydrofoil sections in consideration of viscous effects in comparison to the airfoil section should be studied. In designing the new hydrofoil section shapes, based on Eppler theory, the author tried to give the peak negative pressure in leading edge region for NACA airfoil in consideration of viscous effects without turbulent boundary layer separation as much as possible. The design method was verified from the fact that the boundary characteristics was improved and the lifts of new hydrofoils were slightly in creased in comparison to these of NACA 16-012 symmetrical, NACA 4412 non-symmetrical airfoils.
As one of the development directions of high-performance ships to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, there is research on high-performance propellers. However, in the case of conventional screw propellers, as they have been studied for a long time, there is a limit to improving efficiency only by depending on the conventional design and analysis methods. In this study, we tried to solve the problems using the Coanda effect by spraying a jet on the surface of the hydrofoil. The Coanda hydrofoil consists of a tunnel and jet slit to make jet flow. The computation was performed for each tunnel and slit position, and the efficiency according to the geometry of the hydrofoil was analyzed. In addition, a study on the 3D geometry change was conducted to analyze the performance according to the span direction spraying range and hydrofoil shape. As the height of the slit and the diameter of the tip were lower, when the slit is located in the center of the hydrofoil, the lift force increased and the drag force decreased. The increase rate of lift-to-drag ratio was different according to the shape of the hydrofoil, and the efficiency of the spraying condition of 0.1S-0.5S, which had the least effect on the vortex at the tip of the blade, was high for all 3D hydrofoils. When the geometry of the slit was optimized, and also the shape and spray range of the hydrofoil in 3D was considered, the efficiency of the jet sprayed hydrofoil was increased.

Mixers are used in various industrial fields where it is necessary to intimately mix two reactants in a short period of time. However, despite their widespread use, complex unsteady flow characteristics of industrial mixers are not systematic investigated. The present study aimed to clarify unsteady flow characteristics induced by various impellers in a tank. Impellers arc hydrofoil turbine and neo-hydrofoil turbine types. A high speed CCD camera and an Ar-Ion laser for illumination were adopted to clarify the time-dependent flow characteristics of the mixers. The rotating speed of impellers increased from 6Hz to 60Hz by 6Hz, The maximum velocity around neo-hydrofoil impeller is higher than the hydrofoil type impeller. These two types of turbine shows that typical flow characteristics of axial turbine and suitable for mixing high-viscosity materials.
When a hydrofoil ship plies at high speed, there exist possibilities of collision with ocean mammals dwelling near the surface. An active sonar located within the immersed hydrofoil structure that provides the lift for the vessel, can be used for early warning of their presence. The proper functioning of the active sonar system depends on its ability to reject noise and pick up the target signal. In this article, we measured the noise on a hydrofoil of an operating ship with two flush-mounted hydrophones. The measurements were conducted for the purpose of (1) identifying the effect of operating state of machinery likes engine, cooler and generator (2) observing the change of noise depending on the measuring position (3) observing the change of noise with increasing ship speed. To verify our experiment, experiments were performed three times and the measured results are compared with other investigations and they show similarity to each other. The results are analyzed with frequency domain in order to apply to operating active sonar detecting system and focus on high frequency band within sonar's operating frequency region. Through these experiments and analysis, it is expected that we can identify the generated noise around hydrofoil where active sonar is installed and these results lead us to design active sonar that could distinguish target signal from noise more effectively.
