This paper presents the hydrodynamic performance characteristics of a planing boat which was tested with a new dynamometer system specifically designed to measure towing force along the thrust plane, the change in trim angle and the vertical displacement of the model center of gravity from still water condition. The test conditions include systematic variations in the three positions of LCG and the three load coefficients of a high speed planing boat.

With increasing demands of high speed transportation, recently a lot of high speed marine vehicles, such as SWATH, semi-planing craft, planing craft, hydrofoil craft, SES and so on, have been paid attention especially in high speed region over the Froude number 0.5. The resistance characteristics of the vehicles should be experimentally evaluated in the towing tank. At the Seoul National University, a light-weight cantilever type towing carriage was devised and installed in the towing tank. Wireless measurement devices were also provided for appropriate data acquisition during high-speed towing tests. With the new carriage system, a series of model tests were performed to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of a stepped planning hull in the towing tank and the resistance performances of the hull are introduced in this report.

Various propulsion systems, applicable for a G/T 47,000 class mid-size cruise ship, are discussed and a comparative study on stern forms and hull resistance characteristics is carried out, in relation to these propulsion systems. Based on shipyard production logs on similar cruise ships, a reference hull form of a single shaft propulsion system with center-skeg, is generated. Then two new stern hull forms are derived by using a hull transform technique: consisting of one stern form using a twin-skeg system and the other using the Azipod system. Using a CFD-based commercial flaw analysis program, WAVIS (WAve and VIScous flaw analysis system for hull form development), various hydrodynamic characteristics, including wave profiles and ship hull resistance, are compared for three hull forms.

When a ship sails in a seaway, the resistance on a ship increases due to incident waves and winds. The magnitude of added resistance amounts to about 15–30% of a calm-water resistance. An accurate prediction of added resistance in waves, therefore, is essential to evaluate the performance of a ship in a real sea state and to design an optimum hull form from the viewpoint of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations such as Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI). The present study considers added resistance problem of AFRAMAX-class tankers with the conventional bow and Ax-bow shapes. Added resistance due to waves is successfully calculated using 1) a three-dimensional time-domain seakeeping computations based on a Rankine panel method (three-dimensional panel) and 2) a commercial CFD program (STAR-CCM+). In the hydrodynamic computations of a three-dimensional panel method, geometric nonlinearity is accounted for in Froude-Krylov and restoring forces using simple wave corrections over exact wet hull surface of the tankers. Furthermore, a CFD program is applied by performing fully nonlinear computation without using an analytical formula for added resistance or empirical values for the viscous effect. Numerical computations are validated through four degree-of-freedom model-scale seakeeping experiments in regular head waves at the deep towing tank of Hyundai Heavy Industries.
A simple empirical model with good quantitative prediction of inter-particle and intra-particle distance in a cake layer with respect to ionic strength was developed. The model is an inverse length scale with functions of interaction energy and hydrodynamic factor and it explains that the inter-particle and intra-particle distance in a cake is directly related to the effective size of particles. Particle compressibility with respect to ionic strength was also predicted by the model. The model corroborated very well with experimental results of polystyrene microsphere latex particles microfiltation in a dead end operation. From the results of the model, specific cake resistance could be controlled by the same variables affecting the height of particle energy barrier described by the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory.

A model net experiment of the gape net for anchovy in Jindo, Jeollanam-do was carried out to investigate the net shape and hydrodynamic resistance using circulating water channel. The model net was made 1/33 down scale by Tauti's similarity method and the range of experimental current speed was from 0.5 knot to 3.5 knot (increasing 0.5 knot interval). The net mouth height in 0.5 knot of the minimum experiment current speed was shown 26.0 cm (full-scale conversion value 8.58 m). The net mouth height and mouth area in 1.5 knot of the same current speed with a gape net fishing ground were shown 20.0 cm (full-scale conversion value : 6.60 m) and about $507.9cm^2$ (full-scale conversion value : $55.31m^2$). The net mouth height and area were decreased with increase the experimental current speed. The hydrodynamic resistance of the model net in 1.5 knot current speed was shown 1.11 kgf and the value of full-scale conversion by Tauti's method was shown 3.996 ton.

This study investigated the drag coefficient and lift coefficient of thirteen kinds of knotless nettings used for large purse seine gear. By comparing the hydrodynamic characteristics with nets of the previous study, the characteristics of this study were derived as a purse seine gear. Thirteen kinds of nettings with different length of bar (l) and diameter (d) were used in the experiment, out of which six kinds used the 30 mm in mesh size and three kinds with 40 mm. The drag coefficient ($C_d$) also increased with increasing d/l. It can be expressed as $C_d=3.71499(d/l)+0.76595$ at a current speed 0.4 m/s and $C_d=4.30324(d/l)+0.69056$ at a current speed 0.5 m/s. Compared with previous studies, drag coefficient values were similar to knotless net of similar d/l and smaller than drag coefficient of knot net. Therefore, using knotless net in a purse seine has the advantage of reducing the resistance acting on the purse seine gear.

This paper introduces a study on ship performance in waves to consider the effects of added resistance in the early stage of hull-form design. A ship experiences a loss of speed in actual seaways, hence this study proposes the overall procedure of a new design concept that takes into account the hydrodynamic performance of ship in waves. In the procedure, the added resistance is predicted using numerical methods: slender-body theory and Maruo's far-field formulation, since these methods are efficient in initial design stage, and an empirical formula is adopted for short waves. As computational models, KVLCC2 hull and Supramax bulk carrier are considered, and the results of added resistance and weather factor for test models are discussed. The computational results of vertical motion response and added resistance of KVLCC2 hull are compared with the experimental data. In addition, the sensitivity analysis of added resistance and weather factor for KVLCC2 hull to the variations of ship dimensions are conducted, and the change of the added resistance and propulsion factors after hull form variations are discussed.

For a ship navigating in waves, added resistance, sway force and yaw moment due to waves differ from still water conditions, which affects the maneuverability of the ship. Therefore, it is important to estimate the sway force and yaw moment generated by waves. In this study, numerical simulations were carried out to calculate the hydrodynamic forces acting on a barge in still water and waves using CFD. Based on the results, the characteristics of course stability of a barge were investigated and analyzed. The hydrodynamic forces acting on the barge in waves were stronger than in still water, and it was confirmed that hydrodynamic forces become greater as wavelength becomes longer. In long wavelength regions, the (-) value of the yaw damping lever was larger than in still water. However, in short wavelength regions and when wavelength coincided with the length of the ship, values were smaller than in still water. In this region, it can be assumed that course stability improved. In other words, in long wavelength regions, the course stability of the barge was worse than in still water and short wavelength regions. Therefore, attention is required for safe navigation in long wavelength regions.
