The capacitance technique was used to measure the minimum oil film thickness in engine bearing and the central oil film thickness between cam and tappet. This method is based on the measurement of total capacitance of oil film. For the measurement of the oil film thickness between cam and tappet, two surfaces were assumed to be flat and parallel within the Hertzian region and all the measured capacitance originated from this region. Shear rates from the measured minimum oil film thickness are over 10$^{6}$ sec$^{-1}$ in the greater part in both two cases. The minimum oil film thickness in engine bearing is larger than the surface roughness. Between cam and tappet it is mostly smaller than the surface roughness. In spite of the awkward restriction of the reliability of measured oil film thickness, it was known that the capacitance technique makes it possible to measure the oil film thickness in elastohydrodynamic and mixed lubrication regimes as well as in hydrodynamic regime. Therefore, it is also possible to classify the lubrication regimes based on the oil film thickness.
Underwater robotic vehicles(URVs) are used for various work assignments such as pipe-lining, inspection, data collection, drill support, hydrography mapping, construction, maintenance and repairing of undersea equipment, etc. As the use of such vehicles increases the development of vehicles having greater autonomy becomes highly desirable. The vehicle control system is one of the most critic vehicle subsystems to increase autonomy of the vehicle. The vehicle dynamics is nonlinear and time-varying. Hydrodynamic coefficients are often difficult to accurately estimate. It was also observed by experiments that the effect of electrically powered thruster dynamics on the vehicle become significant at low speed or stationkeeping. The conventional linear controller with fixed gains based on the simplified vehicle dynamics, such as PID, may not be able to handle these properties and result in poor performance. Therefore, it is desirable to have a control system with the capability of learning and adapting to the changes in the vehicle dynamics and operating parameters and providing desired performance. This paper presents an adaptive and learning control system which estimates a new set of parameters defined as combinations of unknown bounded constants of system parameter matrices, rather than system parameters. The control system is described with the proof of stability and the effect of unmodeled thruster dynamics on a single thruster vehicle system is also investigated.
The torque converter, an important component of automatic transmissions, is a hydrodynamic device which has a great influence on transient characteristics of vehicle during shift. To predict the accurate driving performance in extremely transient state such as shifting process, a detailed analysis of the torque converter is required. In this study, one dimensional performance model of the torque converter based on the concept of mean flow path, was used to analyze the shifting transients and the exact values of equivalent parameters were determined from the experimental results by using BOX program. The dynamic modelings of the components of power transmission systems such as engines, planetary gear systems, clutches and one-way clutches, were carried out. To analyze the shifting transients of tracked vehicle, a simulation program was developed. In the modeling of power transmission systems, the stiffness of shafts was neglected and shifting control logic(TCU) was included. Using the developed simulation program, the driving conditions were simulated and the results of simulation were verified through the experiments on the dynamometer.
High speed polishing can kinematically increase the polishing removal rate by using the conventional Preston equation, especially for hard substrates such as sapphire or diamond. However, high speed effects should be clarified beforehand considering the lubrication state and process parameter variations. In this paper, we developed a polishing experimental method and apparatus to determine the lubrication state by measuring the real time friction coefficient using two load cells. Through experiments, we obtained a boundary lubrication state above 0.35 of the friction coefficient by using low table speed and high polishing load, indicating a synchronized stable behavior in polishing head rotation. However, larger Stribeck indexes by a high speed above 200 rpm can generate a hydrodynamic lubrication state below 0.25 of the low friction coefficient. This causes the polishing head rotation to stop. A forced and synchronized head rotation is required for high speed polishing.
Flow pattern of cavitation around a plano-convex foil, whose shape is similar to the inducer impeller of the turbo-pumps in the liquid fuel rocket engine, was observed by using a cryogenic cavitation tunnel of blowdown type for visualization. Working fluids were liquid nitrogen and hot water. The parameter range to be varied was between 20 and 60mm for channel width, 20 and 60mm for foil chord, -1.8 and 13.2 for cavitation number, 3.7 and 19.5m/sec for averaged inlet velocity, $8.5{\times}10^4$ and $1.5{\times}10^6$ for Reynolds number, -8 and $8^{\circ}$ for angle of attack, respectively. Especially at positive angle of attack, namely, convex surface being downstream, the whole cavity or a part of the cavity on the foil surface departs periodically. Periodic cavitation occurs only in case of smaller cavitation size than twice foil chord. Cavitation thickness and length in 20mm wide channel are larger than those in 60mm due to the wall confinement effect. Therefore, periodic cavitation in 60mm wide channel easily occurs than that in 20mm. These results suggest that the periodic cavitation is controlled by not only the hydrodynamic effect of vortex shedding but also the channel wall confinement effect.
In recent years, the maturity of the technology for a high speed underwater vehicle using supercavitation increase, it is entering the stage of applied research for practical use. In this study, hydrodynamic performance of the supercavitating object was evaluated by using a Viscous-Potential based Boundary Element Method(VP-BEM). 27 models with different shape parameters such as body diameter, length and fore-body shape were considered. The process of the supercavity development of each model was simulated, and drag generated according to operating conditions such as changes in water depth was analyzed.
평균조차의 편차에 대한 RMSD(제곱평균제곱근편차, root mean square deviation)를 추정하였다.
