An Experimental Study on the Dynamic Coefficient According to the Source Positions in Externally Pressurized Air-lubricated Journal Bearing with Two Row Sources (2열 외부가압 공기 저어널 베어링에서 급기구 위치에 따른 동적계수에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This paper has been presented the hydrodynamic effect by the journal speed, eccentricity and source positions in order to overcome the defects of air bearing such as low stiffness and damping coefficient. Choosing the two row source position of air bearing is different from existed investigations in the side of pressure distribution of air film because of the high speed of journal and the wedge effects by the eccentricity. These optimal chooses of the two row source positions enable us to improve the performance of the film reaction force and loading force as making the high speed spindle. In this paper, The pressure behavior in theory of air film according to the eccentricity of journal and the source positions analyzed. The theoretical analysis have been identified by experiments. The results of investigated characteristics may be applied to precision devices like ultra-precision grinding machine and ultra high speed milling.

  • Hydrodynamic moments produced by the rolling oscillation on the free surface and the associated swaying force were exactly calculated by Ursell-Tasai method for the cylinders with Kim's chine form sections($a_1,\;a_7$). The coefficient of the added moment of inertia $K_{\varphi^{\tau}}$, the progressive wave height ratio $\bar{A}$, the coefficient of swaying forces $K_{RS}$, ${\alpha}_{RS}$ of rolling oscillations are shown in the several figures. The results of the computation were compared with those of lewis form sections. It is concluded that the effect of the section form on the added moment of inertia is significant for the cylinder with the section of same beam-draft ratio and sectional area coefficient, on the other hand, a little effect appears on the wave damping.

  • In general the drift result in ship heeling, thus it seems to be necessary to analyze the ship motion by considering both the drifting and heeling phenomena. In this paper, a drift velocity and a heeling angle are given as prior conditions, and then within the linear potential theory the hydrodynamic coefficients and wave exciting forces and moments are derived for a ship advancing and drifting with constant speeds. And numerical calculations are preformed for a cylindrical body of shiplike cross section at zerp forward velocity. The 2-D hydrodynamic forces and moments of a heeled cylinder are calculated by using the Frank Close-Fit method. These numerical results for the oscillating cylinder without drift velocity have shown better agreements with experimental data than the numerical results of Kobayashi[2]. The motion responses for a drifting cylinder are calculated ignoring the drift velocity effect in the free surface condition. The accuracy of these calculations can not be verified, because the experimental data are not available. Through these numerical calculations to so concluded that drift velocity effects on the body motion are signiffcant.

  • Springing is the resonance phenomenon of a ship hull girder with incoming waves having the same natural frequency of the ship. In this study, a simple and reliable calculation method was developed based on quadratic strip theory using the Timoshenko beam approach as an elastic hull girder. Second-order hydrodynamic forces and Froude-Krylov forces were applied as the external force. To improve the accuracy of the strip method, the variation in the added mass along the ship hull longitudinal direction, so called tip-effect, was considered. The J-factor was also employed to compensate for the effect of three-dimensional fluid motion on the two-node vibration of the ship. Using the developed method, the first- and second-order vertical bending moments of the Flokstra ship were compared. A comparative study was also carried out for a uniform barge ship and a 10,000 TEU container ship with the respective methods including the J-factor and tip-effect.

  • In this study, the program to investigate the multiple body interaction effects between a floating platform and a shuttle tanker considering the coupled effect of hull (FPSO) with mooring lines and risers was developed. The coupled analysis program, which is called WINPOST-MULT using the hydrodynamic analysis results by WAMIT, was made. For the verification of WINPOST-MULT by means of numerical experiments, two multiple-body models of an FPSO-FPSO and an FPSO-shuttle tanker system are adopted. With the FPSO-FPSO model and a two-mass-spring system to idealize two identical bodies for the 100-year storm wave condition in GOM, the numerical simulations were performed to investigate the interaction effects between two identical bodies. For the more reality, the coupled analysis for the FPSO-shuttle tanker model in the tandem arrangement was carried out in the consideration of the environmental condition of the West Africa Sea as a rather mild condition. Through the case studies with interaction effect and without interaction effect by the iteration method and the combined method, it is verified that the program is a very useful tool for the analysis of the interaction problem of multiple-body system and the coupled problem of the hull/mooring/riser.

Earthquake response of roller compacted concrete dams including galleries

  • The effect of galleries on the earthquake behavior of dams should be investigated to obtain more realistic results. Therefore, a roller compacted concrete (RCC) dam with and without galleries are examined under ground motion effects. For this purpose, Cine RCC dam constructed in Aydın, Turkey, is selected in applications. The optimal mesh around galleries is investigated to obtain the most realistic results. Two-dimensional finite element models of Cine RCC dam with and without galleries are prepared by using ANSYS software. Empty and full reservoir conditions were taken into account in the time-history analyses. Hydrodynamic effect of the reservoir water was taken into account considering two-dimensional fluid finite elements based on the Lagrangian approach. It is examined that how principle stresses and displacements change by height and during earthquake. The dam-foundation-reservoir interaction was taken into consideration with contact-target element pairs. The displacements and principle stress components obtained from the linear analyses are compared each other for various cases of reservoir water and galleries. According to numerical analyses, the effect of galleries is clear on the response of RCC dam. Besides, hydrodynamic water effect obviously increases the principle stress components and horizontal displacements of the dam.

Seismic Sliding Characteristics of Rectangular Structures Submerged in a Rectangular Pool (수조내 사각단면 구조물의 미끄럼 지진응답 특성)

  • According to the conventional method of analysis for the seismic sliding of equipment submerged in a pool, in general, only the initial condition of fluid gap is used to estimate the hydrodynamic effect between the two structures throughout the seismic analysis. This is based on the assumption of small displacement relative to the fluid gap thickness during earthquakes. In a narrow fluid gap condition, however, this method may lead to a result of unconservative side. Through example seismic analyses for equipment submerged in a pool of a building, in this paper, it is studied when and how much the sliding response can be underestimated. And method of updating the hydrodynamic effect in each step of time integration is proposed to avoid excessive error in estimation of peak sliding response in such a case.

  • To product multi-grade oil like engine oil, a sort of mineral base oil is mixed with a fundamental additive liquid package and a polymer liquid as viscosity index improver in order to improve the lubricating property of oil. That is, engine oil is the mixture of more than two fluids. In this paper, it will be systematically organized the governing equation describing non-Newtonian thermo-hydrodynamic lubrication related with the mixture of incompressible fluids based on the principle of continuum mechanics. Then, in order to find how the thermal analysis effect on the bearing performance lubricated with the mixture of multi-fluids, it will be compared to the performances between the mixture of each liquid to be blended and multi-grade engine oil as a single fluid in a high speed journal bearing. It is found that, in the case of lower viscosity oil, the difference of pressure distribution between the above two cases turns out to be existed, even if the load capacity is same level.

Estimation of Hydrodynamic Coefficients from Sea Trials Using a System Identification Method

  • This paper validates a system identification method using mathematical optimization using sea trial measurement data as a benchmark. A fast time simulation tool, SIMOPT, and a Rheinmetall Defence mathematical model have been adopted to conduct initial hydrodynamic coefficient estimation and simulate ship modelling. Calibration for the environmental effect of sea trial measurement and sensitivity analysis have been carried out to enable a simple and efficient optimization process. The optimization process consists of three steps, and each step controls different coefficients according to the corresponding manoeuvre. Optimization result of Step 1, an optimization for coefficient on x-axis, was similar compared to values applying an empirical regression formulae by Clarke and Norrbin, which is used for SIMOPT. Results of Steps 2 and 3, which are for linear coefficients and nonlinear coefficients, respectively, was differ from the calculation results of the method by Clarke and Norrbin. A comparison for ship trajectory of simulation results from the benchmark and optimization results indicated that the suggested stepwise optimization method enables a coefficient tuning in a mathematical way.
