  • Analysis and test of hydrodynamic ram in welded metallic tanks containing water were performed to investigate the phenomena and to understand the effects on the resulting structural behavior. Arbitrary Lagrange-Euler coupling method was used for the analysis of the fluid-structure interaction occurring in the hydrodynamic ram, where the projectile, tank, and water are exchanging load, momentum, and energy during the traveling of the projectile through the water of the tank. For a better representation of the physical phenomena, modeling of the welded edges is added to the analysis to simulate the earlier weld line fracture and its influence on the resulting hydrodynamic ram behavior. Corresponding hydrodynamic tests were performed in a modified gas gun facility, and the following panel-based examinations of various parameters, such as displacement, velocity, stress, and energy, as well as hydrodynamic ram pressure show that the analysis and test are well correlated, and thus the results of the study reasonably explain the characteristics of the hydrodynamic ram. The methodology and procedures of the present study are applicable to the hydrodynamic ram assessment of airframe survivability design concepts.

  • Hydrodynamic ram of aircraft fuel tanks is one of main ballistic battle damages of an aircraft and has great importance to airframe survivability design. Basic concept, physics and research history of hydrodynamic ram are investigated. The penetration and internal detonation of a simple fuel tank and ICW(Intermediate Complexity Wing) are analyzed by computational method. Structural rupture and fluid burst are analytically realized using general coupling and coupling surface interaction. The results such as fluid pressure, tank stress and displacement are shown and future research chances are suggested based on the study.

  • Hydrodynamic ram phenomenon could be generated by external threats such as impact and blast in the aircraft. High strain rate deformation caused by the hydrodynamic ram phenomenon is one of the main factors to influence structural survivability. Mechanical properties of composite structure change rapidly under conditions of high strain rate. Therefore, it is necessary to experimentally investigate the influence of strain rates for aircraft structural survivability. In this paper, tensile tests of composite material were conducted for low and high strain rates to investigate the influence of the various strain rates. Tensile modulus increases more compared to tensile strength at high strain rate under hydrodynamic ram condition. Regression analysis was conducted to predict tensile modulus at various strain rates because it is one of the main damaging factors for composite structures under high strain rate conditions. Also, the mechanical properties of composite materials were acquired and analyzed under high strain rate conditions. It is hypothesized that the results from this study would be used for designing aircraft composite structures and evaluation considering structural survivability.

  • Recent observational studies suggest that the environmental effects can shape the evolution of galaxies in clusters. In an attempt to better understand this process, we perform idealized radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of RAM pressure stripping on star-forming galaxies using RAMSES-RT. We find that extended HI disks are easily stripped by moderate ICM winds, while there is no significant decrease in the total mass of molecular gas. RAM pressure tends to compress the molecular gas, leading to enhanced star formation especially when the gaseous disk is hit by edge-on winds. On the other hand, strong ICM winds that are expected to operate at the centre of clusters strip both HI and molecular gas from the galaxy. Interestingly, we find that the strong ICM winds can induce the formation of relatively dense (~1H/cc) HI gas clouds at a distance from the disk.

  • The hydrodynamic ram (HRAM) phenomenon is one of the main types of ballistic battle damages of a military aircraft and has great importance to airframe survivability design. The HRAM effect occurs due to the interaction between the fluid and structure, and damage can be investigated by measuring the pressure of the fluid and the dynamic strains on the structure. In this paper, HRAM test of a composite T-Joint was performed using a ram simulator which can generate HRAM pressure. In addition, calibration tests of PVDF sensor were performed to determine the circuit capacitance and time constant of the measurement system. The failure behavior of the composite T-Joint due to HRAM pressure was examined using the strain gauges and a PVDF sensor which were attached to the surface of the composite T-Joint.

  • The downstream of the Nam River Dam is crucial region for long-term water resource planning for Busan and Gyeongnam Province. Thus, the analysis of flow behavior and water quality is necessary for the sustainable surface water management and the control of pollutant source. In this study, the flow field and BOD transport at the downstream of Nam River Dam were analyzed by incorporating 2-D water quality model, RAM4 and 3-D water quality model, WASP with the hydrodynamic model, RAM2 and EFDC, respectively. The application of 2-D flow analysis model, RAM2 showed that velocity distributions at the five transverse sections of the meandering part closely followed the measured values by ADCP, and the flow field and overflow characteristic at the submerged weir showed satisfactory performance compared with the result of 3-D EFDC model. In addition, the BOD concentration field obtained by RAM2-RAM4 coupled modeling was in good agreement with the result by EFDC-WASP model throughout the computational domain. The hydrodynamic characteristic and water quality at the downstream reach of Nam River Dam are mainly influenced by the Dam discharge, and the water quantity is closely related to the water quality control and fishery environment at the lower part of Nakdong River. Therefore, when further quantitative analysis is necessary regarding these issues, 2-D semi-coupled modeling is recommended in terms of computational effectiveness and model application aspect.

  • The hydrodynamic models are widely used in the research for analysis of flow characteristics and design of hydraulic structure and river channel. These models need to be calibrated with observed data. But, there are few field data of two-dimensional flow velocity in flood because the direct measurement of the flood flow velocity are very dangerous. For this reason the results of two-dimensional numerical models are usually calibrated and verified with only a few observed data. Moreover, the verification of numerical models for the design flood is usually carried out using the result of one-dimensional model, HEC-RAS. In this study, using the flow velocity profile extracted from the aerial photos of a flood of the Tone River in Japan, two-dimensional numerical models, RAM2 in RAMS, RMA2 in SMS, and one-dimensional numerical model, HEC-RAS which are most widely used in research and design work are verified and the validity for verification of two-dimensional models with HEC-RAS is reviewed. The results showed that the water surface elevation of HEC-RAS, RAM2 and RMA2 models have similar results with observed data. But, the velocity results of RAM2 and RMA2 models in the floodplain have some difference with the velocity from aerial photo analysis. And the velocity result of HEC-RAS has big difference with the sectional averaged value of velocity from aerial photo analysis.

  • In this paper, fluid-structure of interaction behavior of a fluid-filled cylindrical polymer container impacted by a high speed spherical projectile was studied using ALE(Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) method. The hydrodynamic ram phenomenon occurred by the impact projectile penetrating through the container was investigated by examining time histories of projectile velocity and fluid pressure and density. The analysis results were agreed reasonably well compared to those by experiments.
