A HIGH PERFORMANCE CLUSTER FOR ASTRONOMICAL COMPUTATIONS (천문 계산용 고성능 클러스터 구축)

  • A high performance computing cluster for astronomical computations has been built at Korea Astronomy Observatory. The 64 node cluster interconnected with Gigabit Ethernet is composed of 128 Intel Xeon processors, 160 GB memory, 6 TB global storage space, and an LTO (Linear Tape-Open) tape library. The cluster was installed and has been managed with the Open Source Cluster Application Resource (OSCAR) framework. Its performance for parallel computations was measured with a three-dimensional hydrodynamic code and showed quite a good scalability as the number of computational cells increases. The cluster has already been utilized for several computational research projects, some of which resulted in a few publications, even though its full operation time is less than one year. As a major resource of the $K^*Grid$ testbed, the cluster has been used for Grid computations, too.

Dynamic responses of an FPSO moored on sloped seabed under the action of environmental loads

  • The inclination of seabed profile (sloped seabed) is one of the known topographic features which can be observed at different seabed level in the large offshore basin. A mooring system connected between the platform and global seabed is an integral part of the floating structure which tries to keep the floating platform settled in its own position against hostile sea environment. This paper deals with an investigation of the motion responses of an FPSO platform moored on the sloped seabed under the combined action of wave, wind and current loads. A three-dimensional panel discretization method has been used to model the floating body. To introduce the connection of multi-segmented non-linear elastic catenary mooring cables with the sloped seabed, a quasi-static composite catenary model is employed. The model and analysis have been completed by using hydrodynamic diffraction code AQWA. Validation of the numerical model has been successfully carried out with an experimental work published in the latest literature. The analysis procedure in this study has been followed time domain analysis. The study involves an objective oriented investigation on platform motions, in order to identify the effects of the slopped seabed, the action of the wave, wind and current loads and the presence of riser system. In the end, an effective analysis has been performed to identify a stable mooring model in demand of reducing structural responses of the FPSO.

  • A general purpose viscous flow solver Ansys CFX is used to study a Savonius type wave energy converter in a 3D numerical viscous wave tank. This paper presents the results of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the effect of blade configuration on the performance of 3 bladed Savonius rotors for wave energy extraction. A piston-type wave generator was incorporated in the computational domain to generate the desired incident waves. A complete OWC system with a 3-bladed Savonius rotor was modeled in a three dimensional numerical wave tank and the hydrodynamic conversion efficiency was estimated. The flow over the rotors is assumed to be two-dimensional (2D), viscous, turbulent and unsteady. The CFX code is used with a solver of the coupled conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy, with an implicit time scheme and with the adoption of the hexahedral mesh and the moving mesh techniques in areas of moving surfaces. Turbulence is modeled with the k.e model. Simulations were carried out simultaneously for the rotor angle and the helical twist. The results indicate that the developed models are suitable to analyze the water flows both in the chamber and in the turbine. For the turbine, the numerical results of torque were compared for all the cases.

Assessing Temporal and Spatial Salinity Variations in Estuary Reservoir Using EFDC (염분수지 및 EFDC 모형을 이용한 간척 담수화호 염도변화모의)

  • Forecasting salinity in an estuary reservoir is essential to promise irrigation water for the reclaimed land. The objective of the research was to assess salinity balance and its temporal and spatial variations in the Iwon estuary reservoir which has been issued by its high contents of salinity in spite of desalination process for four years. Seepage flows through the see dikes which could be one of possible reason of high salinity level of the reservoir was calculated based on the salinity balance in the reservoir, and used as input data for salinity modeling. A three-dimensional hydrodynamic model, Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC), was used to simulate salinity level in the reservoir. The model was calibrated and validated based on weekly or biweekly observed salinity data from 2006 to 2010 in four different locations in the reservoir. The values of $R^2$, RMSE and RMAE between simulated and observed salinity were calculated as 0.70, 2.16 dS/m, and 1.72 dS/m for calibration period, and 0.89, 1.15 dS/m, and 0.89 dS/m for validation period, respectively, showing that simulation results was generally consistent with the observation data.

DYNAMICAL EVOLUTION OF SUPERNOVA REMNANTS BREAKING THROUGH MOLECULAR CLOUDS

  • We carry out three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of the supernova remnants (SNRs) produced inside molecular clouds (MCs) near their surface using the HLL code (Harten et al. 1983). We explore the dynamical evolution and the X-ray morphology of SNRs after breaking through the MC surface for ranges of the explosion depths below the surface and the density ratios of the clouds to the intercloud media (ICM). We find that if an SNR breaks out through an MC surface in its Sedov stage, the outermost dense shell of the remnant is divided into several layers. The divided layers are subject to the Rayleigh-Taylor instability and fragmented. On the other hand, if an SNR breaks through an MC after the remnant enters the snowplow phase, the radiative shell is not divided to layers. We also compare the predictions of previous analytic solutions for the expansion of SNRs in stratified media with our onedimensional simulations. Moreover, we produce synthetic X-ray surface brightness in order to research the center-bright X-ray morphology shown in thermal composite SNRs. In the late stages, a breakout SNR shows the center-bright X-ray morphology inside an MC in our results. We apply our model to the observational results of the X-ray morphology of the thermal composite SNR 3C 391.

  • In this study, a simple, efficient, user-based program called SCAR was developed for evaluating the sliding and collapse of artificial reefs due to hydrodynamic forces in ocean environments. SCAR was developed by applying Delphi code and a Graphical User Interface (GUI) based on the Morison formula for evaluating and analyzing the stability of artificial reefs. SCAR can be applied widely for design and stability evaluation of fishery structures (such as artificial reefs or other underwater structures) in undergraduate and graduate courses and by experts in the field.

  • An attempt to improve the speed performance through the minimizing in wave resistance has been done by an application of gooseneck and no bulb type to bulbous bow for the DSME 78,500 Class LPG Carrier on the basis of the CFD calculation and comparatives model tests. The hydrodynamic characteristics according to the variation of the shape of Cp-curve, design load water line, frame line and bulbous bow that have an important effect on the wave resistance has been evaluated/calculated by ship-flow code. A wide variety in hull variation have been tried to have a good hull form with three types of fore-body hull forms mainly classified by the shape of bulbous bow. The speed performances for the three final hull forms with different bulbous bows have been evaluated through the model tests.

  • The finite volume based multi-block RANS code, WAVIS developed at KRISO, is used to simulate the turbulent flow field around the KRISO container ship (KCS) and the modified KRISO tanker (KVLCC2M). The realizable k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with a wall function is employed for the turbulence closure. The free surface flow with and without propeller is mainly investigated for the KCS and the double model flow is concerned for the KVLCC2M which is obliquely towed in still water. The computed results are compared with the experimental data provided by CFD Tokyo Workshop 2005 in terms of wave profiles, hull surface pressure and wake distribution with and without propeller for the HCS and wake distribution and hydrodynamic forces and moments with various drift angles for the KVLCC2M.

Nature of the Wiggle Instability of Galactic Spiral Shocks

  • Gas in disk galaxies interacts nonlinearly with a underlying stellar spiral potential to form galactic spiral shocks. Numerical simulations typically show that these shocks are unstable to the wiggle instability, forming non-axisymmetric structures with high vorticity. While previous studies suggested that the wiggle instability may arise from the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability or orbit crowding of gas elements near the shock, its physical nature remains uncertain. It was even argued that the wiggle instability is of numerical origin, caused by the inability of a numerical code to resolve a shock that is inclined to numerical grids. In this work, we perform a normal-mode linear stability analysis of galactic spiral shocks as a boundary-value problem. We find that the wiggle instability originates physically from the potential vorticity generation at a distorted shock front. As the gas follows galaxy rotation, it periodically passes through multiple shocks, successively increasing its potential vorticity. This sets up a normal-mode that grows exponentially, with a growth rate comparable to the orbital angular frequency. We show that the results of our linear stability analysis are in good agreement with the those of local hydrodynamic simulations of the wiggle instability.

NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION ON HYDRODYNAMIC LUBRICATION CHARACTERISTICS OF MICRO DIMPLE TEXTURED SURFACES (미세 딤플 가공 표면의 수력학적 윤활특성에 대한 수치해석)

  • This study deals with the numerical investigation on two-dimensional lubrication characteristics of micro-dimple shapes fabricated on solid surfaces by using the commercial CFD code (Fluent V.6.3) to examine the influence of micro dimple depth and width on the reduction in friction under the sliding plate condition. In addition, single and multiple dimple arrays are simulated, all for a fixed area fraction of dimple on the surface. As a result, it is found that the existence of micro-dimpled surface makes it possible to substantially reduce the friction forces exerted on the surfaces, and such an optimum dimple depth would be present because the dimple depth larger than the optimum value did no longer affect the reduction in shear stresses, indicating that the reduction of friction is likely to be associated with inner flows of lubricant inside dimples. Moreover, it is observed that at the fixed area fraction, the friction reduction increases with the increase of dimple diameter.
