Solvent Extraction of Tb(III) from Hydrochloric Acid Solution with Cyanex 272, Its Mixture and Ionic Liquid (염산용액에서 Cyanex 272 및 혼합용매와 이온성 액체에 의한 Tb(III)의 용매추출)

  • Cyanex 272 shows the highest separation factor for the rare earth elements from hydrochloric acid solution among the organophosporus acidic extractants, D2EHPA and PC 88A. Solvent extraction of Tb(III) from weak hydrochloric acid solution with an initial pH 3 to 6 was compared with Cyanex 272, its mixture with Alamine 336, and ionic liquid with Aliquat 336. The solvent extraction reaction of Tb(III) using Cyanex 272 was the same as that of light rare earth elements. Synergism was observed for the extraction of Tb(III) by the mixture with Alamine 336 when the initial concentration ratio of Cyanex 272 to Alamine 336 was higher than 5. Use of the ionic liquid led to a great increase in the extraction percentage of Tb(III) from the same initial extraction conditions. While the equilibrium pH of the mixture was always lower than the initial pH, under some conditions extraction with the ionic liquid resulted in a higher equilibrium pH than the initial pH. The loading capacity of the mixture and the ionic liquid was the same and 2.6 times larger than that using Cyanex 272 alone. Ionic liquid was recommended as a suitable extractant for the extraction of Tb(III) from hydrochloric acid solution based on the ease of handling and higher extraction percentage.

Reductive Precipitation of Platinum and Palladium with Hydrazine in Hydrochloric Acid Solution (염산용액에서 하이드라진에 의한 백금과 팔라듐의 환원석출)

  • The reductive precipitation of platinum and palladium in hydrochloric acid solution using hydrazine as a reducing agent was investigated. The reductive precipitation ratios of platinum and palladium increased when increasing the stoichiometric ratio for reducing agent, precipitation time, and pH. The precipitation ratio of platinum was much lower than that of palladium. This is the reason the reaction rate of $PtCl{_6}^{2-}{\rightarrow}PtCl{_4}^{2-}$ at the reduction reaction step of $PtCl{_6}^{2-}{\rightarrow}PtCl{_4}^{2-}{\rightarrow}Pt$ is very slow. The purity of platinum precipitated was very affected by metallic impurities, while it was possible to precipitate the high purity palladium since the precipitation rate of palladium was relatively fast. At the pH of 1.3, the precipitation temperature of $25^{\circ}C$, and the addition amounts of the hydrazine of 10 and 1.75 times the stoichiometric ratio, the reductive precipitation ratios of platinum and palladium from their hydrochloric acid solutions containing 2,000 ppm were 98.5% and 99.9% in 30 min, respectively.

  • Purpose: The purpose is to find the optimal way to quickly block the leak in the event of a leak accident in a tank lorry transporting hydrochloric acid aqueous solution, a hazardous chemical, and to carry out effective disaster prevention work to minimize damage caused by the leak. Method: We organized the overall characteristics of hydrochloric acid and accidents that occurred during transportation by accident type and cause, and created a small tank that can be tested assuming a leak situation in a hydrochloric acid tanker, creating an environment similar to the leak situation, and leaking in various ways. I would like to experiment and organize blocking methods. Result: Through experiments, an effective leak blocking method was confirmed. We would like to summarize measures to quickly block a leak in the event of a leak and present the optimal disaster prevention plan that can be applied at the accident site. Conclusion: It has been confirmed that using a combination of adhesive tape and magnets is more effective in blocking leaks. Rapid response is possible by repeatedly training business emergency response teams and product transporters to appropriately select and respond to leak-blocking equipment. Additional research on various leak prevention methods is needed in the future.

Characteristics of phosphorus leaching from sewage sludge ash by acid and alkali (산과 알카리에 의한 슬러지 소각재의 인 침출 특성)

  • Phosphorus is an essential and irreplaceable element for all living organisms and its resource is limited. Significant amount of used phosphorus is collected in sewage treatment plant as sludge. Sludge ash after incineration contains about 10% of phosphorus in dry mass basis, which is comparable to phosphate rocks, and it is an important source of phosphorus recovery. Acid and alkali were used to leach phosphorus from sludge ash and compared for their leaching kinetics and performance. Phosphorus leaching by NaOH was fast and 0.2 N and 2 N NaOH leached 49% and 56% of the total phosphorus in the sludge ash at the L/S ratio of 100. Phosphorus leaching by sulphuric acid and hydrochloric were very fast and most of the phosphorus was leached in 5 minutes. In case of sulphuric acid 95% of the total phosphorus in the sludge ash was leached by 0.2 N at the L/S ratio of 100 and 93% was leached by 1 N at the L/S ratio of 10. 1 N hydrochloric acid leached 99% of the total phosphorus at the L/S ratio of 10. The results showed acids were more effective than alkali for phosphorus leaching from sludge ash and hydrochloric acid leached more phosphorus than sulphuric acid.

Optimum Condition of Extracting Collagen from Chicken Feet and its Characetristics

  • The objective of this research was to evaluate alternative treatments for the best extraction condition for collagen from chicken feet. Various properties such as chemical composition, amino acid, pH, swelling percentage, yield and pure collagen, collagen loss, color (Hunter L, a and b) and electrophoresis of collagen from chicken feet treated by 5% acids (acetic acid, citric acid. hydrochloric acid and lactic acid) and soaking times (12, 24, 36 and 48 h) were evaluated. The crude protein, fat, ash and moisture contents of chicken feet was 17.42, 12.04, 5.98 and 62.05%, respectively. Amino acid composition of collagen from chicken feet indicated that the protein of collagen was markedly hydrolized by the hydrochloric acid treatment. The result of electrophoresis also supported this phenomenon. Both the swelling percentage of lactic acid and citric acid treatments were significantly higher than that of acetic acid and HC1 treatment. The pH of the acid treatments ranged from 2.43-3.62. According to the result of yield, pure collagen and loss of collagen, the best condition of extracting collagen from chicken feet was soaked in 5% lactic acid for 36 h. However, a brighter yellow color of collagen from all treatments was observed with a longer soaking time.

  • A study on the cementation for the recovery of tin with aluminium in the hydrochloric acid solution was carried out. Parameters, such as aluminium metal equivalent, pH, reaction time, reaction temperature and the concentration of chloride ions were investigated. The experimental results showed that the cementation rate of Sn(II) ions increased with increase of the addition amount of aluminium powders, temperature, pH and the concentration of chloride ions in hydrochloric acid solution. From the results, the optinum conditions for recovery of metallic tin by cementation with aluminium metal powders were proposed.

  • Degummed silk from Bombyx mori was dissolved in 9.3M lithium bromide solution. The regenerated silk fibroin films were completely ${\alpha}$-randomcoil type as shown by x-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. The structural changes in silk fibroin induced by immersion into methanol and dilute hydrochloric acid and its photo-yellowing effect was studied. The changes of crystallinity were measured by infrared spectrometer. Yellowness index caused by ultraviolet irradiation were observed as a function of the structural change on silk fibroin. On treatment with methanol, ${\alpha}$-randomcoil silk film is converted to the ${\beta}$-form structure. After the treatment of hydrochloric acid on ${\beta}$-form structure in silk induced by immersion into methanol, ${\beta}$-form in silk fibroin is partially decreased. Crystallization owing to ${\beta}$-form transition reduced the initial yellowness index by ultraviolet irradiation. A little ${\beta}$-form structure in silk fibroin increased the initial yellowness in comparison with more ${\beta}$-form structure.

  • This study analyzed the chemical accidents of hydrochloric acid which is the most frequent chemical in order to make safety management improvement plans. 28 Cases have occurred for the last 4 years, 8 cases of which were casualty accidents, and more efficient plans are needed to minimize the accidents. For this purpose, this study investigated the problems through yearly statistics of the chemical accidents, and suggested appropriate measures of facility management, safety culture and management plans. It is important for businesses to make and implement the improvement measures according to time schedule.

  • Waste aluminum dross was leached with hydrochloric acid to prepare PAC, poly aluminium chloride, used as water treatment chemicals. Metallic aluminum remained in the waste aluminum dross was dissolved into the hydrochloric acid solution. The solution could be used as PAC after adjusting the required alumina concentration and the basicity. Comparing to the conventional method far preparation of PAC using aluminum hydroxide, material cost could be saved in this method. Also, there is an additional merit in view of recycling of the waste aluminum dross by reducing the amount of waste dross to be landfilled.

  • Effect of ball milling treatment on the hydrochloric acid leaching performance of black dross was investigated to recover alumina. Ball milling time and speed showed limited effect on the leaching behavior of the alumina in the mechanically dross. Under the optimum mechanical activation condition (for 1h at 700 rpm), the leaching of alumina in hydrochloric acid solution was significantly affected by leaching time and reaction temperature. MgO was completely dissolved in most of the leaching conditions, while a small amount of Ca, Fe, Si and Ti oxides was dissolved. Although 80% of alumina was dissolved, the dissolved minor components such as Ca, Fe, Mg, Si and Ti oxides should be separated to recover pure alumina solution.
