  • The effects of particle size on the surface properties of hydro-thermally synthesized barium titanate powders were investigated by means of particle size analysis, specific surface area, SEM, zeta potential and XPS. Particle sizes were measured by laser light scattering and are in the range of 150 to 1100nm. Zeta potential increased with increasing particle size and it was large minus value in the range of particle size from 500 to 900nm, which seems to be related with the dissolution of $Ba^{2+}$ ion in these particle sizes from the analysis of surface properties by XPS.

  • As the organic acids were added in the slurry, zeta potential of alumina was changed to negative value and IEP value was shifted from alkaline to acidic pH. In citric acid based slurry, Cu surface continuously dissolved and etching depth linearly increased. On the contrary, passivation layer was grown on Cu surface in oxalic acid based slurry. As the platen rotation speed increased, Preston coefficient decreased in both slurries. With oxalic acid based slurry, at low velocity, removal rate is high value because of high friction force compared to citric acid based slurry. As platen velocity increased, removal of Cu in citric acid based slurry became higher value than oxalic acid based slurry. Typical lubrication behaviors were observed in both slurries. As Sommerfeld number increased, COF values gradually decreased and then re-increased. It indicated that lubrication was changed to direct contact or semi-direct contact mode to hydro-lubrication mode.

  • Dimensionally stable anode(DSA) can be used for the hydro-metallurgy of non-ferrous metals like as Zn, and the electrolysis of sea water. MnO$_2$ electrode satisfies the requirements of DSA, and has a good cycle life and a low overpotential for oxygen evolution. MnO$_2$ electrodes based on Ti matrix were prepared by using thermal decomposition method and also MnO$_2$ was coated on Ti and Pb matrix with DMF and PVDF compositions. The MnO$_2$ electrodes prepared by thermal decomposition method had very weak adhesive strength onto Ti matrix and MnO$_2$ layer was removed out so that electrochemical properties for MnO$_2$ were not investigated. The viscosity of solvent used as a binder of MnO$_2$ Powder increased with the increasing PVDF contents. The thickness of the MnO$_2$ layer on Pb matrix in DSA, which was prepared with 5 times dipping at the solution mixed with PVDF : DMF = 1 : 9, was 150${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. When the ratio of PVDF to MnO$_2$ was lower than 1 : 6, the Pb electrode didn't show any reaction irrespective of the concentrations of DMF. However, When the ratio of PVDF to MnO$_2$ was higher than 1: 6, the Pb electrode showed constant current reactions and homogeneous cyclic voltammetry even though at a high cycle. The reason for the high current and homogeneous cyclic voltammetry is the good catalytic reactions of MnO$_2$ powder in electrode.

  • Leaching of MOCVD dust in the LED industry is an essential stage for hydro-metallurgical recovery of pure Ga and In. To recover Ga and In, the leaching behavior of MOCVD scrap of an LED, which contains significant amounts of Ga, In, Al and Fe in various phases, has been investigated. The leaching process must be performed effectively to maximize recovery of Ga and In metals using the most efficient lixiviant. Crystalline structure and metallic composition of the raw MOCVD dust were analyzed prior to digestion. Subsequently, various mineral acids were tested to comprehensively study and optimize the leaching parameters such as acidity, pulp density, temperature and time. The most effective leaching of Ga and In was observed for a boiling 4 M HCl solution vigorously stirred at 400 rpm. Phase transformation of GaN into gallium oxide by heat treatment also improved the leaching efficiency of Ga. Subsequently high purity Ga and In can be recovered by series of hydro processes.

  • Cobalt is a vital metal in the modern society because of its applications in lithium-ion batteries, super alloys, hard metals, and catalysts. Further, cobalt is a representative rare metal and is the 30th most abundant element in the Earth's crust. This study reviews the current status of cobalt extraction and recycling processes, along with the trends in its production amount and use. Although cobalt occurs in a wide range of minerals, such as oxides and sulfides of copper and nickel ores, the amounts of cobalt in the minerals are too low to be extracted economically. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) leads cobalt mining, and accounts for 68.9 % of the global cobalt reserves (142,000 tons in 2020). Cobalt is mainly extracted from copper-cobalt and nickel-cobalt concentrates and is occasionally extracted directly from the ore itself by hydro-, pyro-, and electro-metallurgical processes. These smelting methods are essential for developing new recycling processes to extract cobalt from secondary resources. Cobalt is mainly recycled from lithium-ion batteries, spent catalysts, and cobalt alloys. The recycling methods for cobalt also depend on the type of secondary cobalt resource. Major recycling methods from secondary resources are applied in pyro- and hydrometallurgical processes.

  • Processing and smelting of copper containing sulphide concentrates result in the accumulation of impurities into various process streams. All primary copper smelters and refineries around the world produce significant amounts of slag, dust, sludge, residues and others, which contain copper and precious metals. The recovery of these valuable metals is essential to the overall economics of the smelting process. Physical, chemical and mineralogical characterization of particular slag and Cottrell dusts from primary smelters and Dore furnace (TBRC) slag and Pressure Leached Anode slimes from a copper refinery have been carried out to understand the basic behind the recovery processes. Various process options have been evaluated and adapted for the treatment of slag from different smelting furnaces and Cottrell dusts as well as the intermediate products from copper refineries. Besides the hydro- or pyre-metallurgical treatments, the above mentioned physical separation options such as magnetic, gravity separation, flotation and precipitation flotation processes have been successfully identified and adapted as the possible process options to produce a Cu-rich or precious metal-rich concentrates for in-house recycling and other valued by-product for further treatment. The results of laboratory, pilot plant and production operations are presented, and incorporation of several alternative flowsheet is discussed in this paper.
