Output Characterization Analysis of Induction Generator using Test Data (시험 데이터를 이용한 유도발전기의 출력 특성 분석)

  • Induction generator is used primarily in small hydroelectric power station less than 1000kW recently. Unlike the synchronous generator, induction generator produces electricity when it is rotated above synchronous speed. In this study, we calculated the parameters of the induction generator with test reports presented by the manufacturer and analyzed that how much the induction generator has produced power near the rated speed. If we can use the test data to calculate the parameters, it is possible the output characteristics analysis of the induction generator. As a result of analysis, we concluded that output of induction generator varies sensitively for small changes in rotational speed in the near synchronous speed.

  • In general, the voltage stability of induction generator is lower than synchronous generator. However, induction generator has many advantages rather than a synchronous generator in terms of price and maintenance. So Induction generator is used little by little in small hydroelectric power station rather than 1000kW recently. Squirrel cage induction generator generates a high inrush current at the grid-connection. This high inrush current causes a voltage drop on the grid. In order to increase the penetration of the induction generator, it is necessary to present a method of reducing inrush current. In this study, we suggested that it is possible to present a reactor startup method, by applying the parameter to reduce the voltage drop.

  • In general, the voltage stability of induction generator is lower than synchronous generator. Induction generator has a number of advantages over the synchronous generator on the side of price and maintenance. So Induction generator has been applied to the small hydroelectric power of low output. Induction generator usually generates a high current during grid connection. The high current that occurs during grid connection can cause a voltage drop in the system. In order to increase the supply of the induction generator, it is necessary to propose a method of reducing high current. This paper proposes some method of the soft start to reduce voltage drop caused by the large starting current. soft-start method has high voltage drop effect than direct start method, control of firing angle can be increased the voltage drop effect.

  • Squirrel cage induction motor is the main driving system of industrial field and familiar with its use in a large variety of applications. However, many engineer are unfamiliar with the induction generator, even though no difference exists between both machines except for the mode of operation. But an induction generator is commonly used for micro & small hydro power applications due to its simplicity, reliability, low cost and robustness. Input and output of induction motor has turned against at the induction generator operation. Rotation speed of induction generator is small faster than induction motor. As output of induction machines increases with the increasement of speed, so loss is same. Actually, generator efficiency is lower than motor at this condition. If induction generator is connected with mechanical load, total efficiency is decreased. In this paper, we analyzed that input, output, torque and efficiency is different from each other above and below synchronous speed.

  • As smart grid techniques developed, public attention is concentrating on energy efficiency. So it is necessary to study on new renewable energy in order to manage the energy within micro grid consisting smart grid. Among them, small hydro energy has the advantage of being installable anywhere depending the amount of water used by the users within micro grid. This study examines if the measured value is appropriate for small hydro power generation by measuring generation quantity and operation rate of generator based on the sewage flow used by apartments and multi-unit dwellings where those users live. Some appropriate apartments and multi-unit dwellings generate electricity with small hydro generator using sewage as potential energy. This study intends to suggest more effective management by introducing energy management system and electricity storage device of micro grid.

  • In the operation of large capacity hydro generators, it's a very important thing that to minimize several kind of electrical trouble and accident. In order to overcome these problems, the on-line and off-line partial discharge (PD) measuring method has become an important one. Nowadays, epoxy mica coupler(EMC) has been the most widely used sensors for on-line PD detection in rotating machines. This time, we have made a ceramic coupling sensor using $SrTiO_{3}$, because at present, most of sensors has high cost and difficult procedure to making. This paper deals with the electrical characteristics of a ceramic coupling sensor, which has been made to continuously measure PD activity during the operation condition for 13kV class hydro generator. And we have performed the evaluation of sensor life and reliability based on the characteristic testing. The experimental results confirm that the sensor has satisfied at electrical required performance and output characteristic for simulated input signal.

  • Pipes and components of the secondary system in the pressurized water reactor (PWR) are mainly comprised of manufactured carbon steel. Thus, the generated carbon steel corrosion products are transported into the steam generator and deposited, thereby deteriorating the integrity of the steam generator. Environmental condition in the secondary system of the PWRs differs across different locations. So, the corrosion rate and types of corrosion products depend on specific locations in the secondary system. In this study, the quantity and chemical compositions of corrosion products generated in various locations that vary in different temperatures and chemistry conditions were investigated. As a result of evaluating the PWR "Unit A" that is in current operation, the amount of corrosion products generated in the section of high temperature feedwater system was identified as the largest source in the secondary system. Major components of corrosion products were iron oxides such as magnetite, hematite, and lepidocrocite.

  • The induction generator has many advantages compared to the synchronous generator in terms of cost and maintenance. So squirrel cage induction generator has been recently supplied in small hydroelectric power station. Squirrel cage induction generator generates a high inrush current at the grid-connection.   • There are conditions that can be unbalanced three phase currents in a large generator by untransposed lines, unbalanced loads, unsymmetrical faults, and open phases. The unbalanced conditions can producing negative sequence components of current that induce two times frequence current in the surface of the rotor, the retaining rings, the slot wedges in the field windings. These rotor currents make the rotor rapidly overheat, so the rotor can cause substantial damage in a very short time. This paper presents the digital negative sequence relay algorithm for unbalanced protection in a generator. The proposed algorithm was tested by using collected current signals on PSCAD/EMTDC considering a hydro turbine based generator control system. It can be seen that the proposed relaying by negative sequence current is useful for detection of unbalanced state of large generator.

  • Automatic control equipment in hydro power plant, such as turbine governor or automatic voltage regulator have to act promptly against for variation of power system, so it is necessary to check and test continuously. During last five years, the performance test of automatic control equipment was performed about 20 units of hydro turbine generator. In this process, because it has complex connection and before calibration, signal conditioner was developed as an auxiliary equipment for performance test. It includes function of signal amplifier, transducer, and meters. As a result of use this equipment for electric governor test at soyang-gang hydro power plant, it was possible to find output data equal to old one.
