  • The microstructure evolution in hot forging process is composed of dynamic recrystallization during deformation as well as grain growth during dwell time. Therefore, the control of forging parameters such as strain, strain rate. temperature and holding time is important because the microstructure change in hot working affects the mechanical properties. Modeling equations are developed to represent the flow curve. grain size. recrystallized volume fraction and grain growth phenomena by various tests. The developed modeling equations were combined with thermo-viscoplastic finite element modeling to predict the microstructure change evolution during hot forging process. The large exhaust valve spindle (head diameter of 512mm) was simulated by closed die forging with hydraulic press and cooled in air after forging. The preform was heated to each 1080 and 1150$^{\circ}C$. Numerical calculation was performed by DEFORM-2D. a commercial finite element code. Heat transfer can be coupled with the deformation analysis in a non-isothermal deformation analysis. In order to obtain the fine and homogeneous microstructure and good mechanical properties in forging. the FEM would become a useful tool in the simulation of the microstructure development. In forging, appropriate temperature, strain and strain rate and rapid cooling are required to obtain the fine grain microstructure The optimal forging temperature and effective strain range of Nimonic 80A for large exhaust valve spindle are about 1080$\∼$l120$^{\circ}C$ and 150$\∼$200$\%$.

  • The flow characteristics and heat transfer augment on the periodically arranged semi-circular ribs in a rectangular channel for turbulent flow has been investigated numerically. The aspect ratio of the rectangular channel was AR=5, the rib height to hydraulic diameter ratio were 0.07 and rib height to channel height ratio was set as e/H=0.117 for various PR(rib pitch-to-rib height rate) between 8~14, respectively. The SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence model and v2-f turbulence model were used to find out the heat transfer and the flow characteristics of near the wall which are suited to obtain realistic phenomena. The numerical analysis results show turbulent flow characteristics, heat transfer enhancement and friction factor as observed experimentally. The results predict that turbulent kinetic energy(k) is closely relative to the diffusion of recirculation flow. and v2-f turbulence model simulation results have a good agreement with experimental values.

  • Sodium borohydride ($NaBH_4$) is considered as a secure metal hydride for hydrogen storage and supply. In this study, the interfacial friction of two-phase flow in the dehydrogenation of aqueous $NaBH_4$ solution in a microchannel with a hydraulic diameter of $461{\mu}m$ is investigated for designing a dehydrogenation chemical reactor flow passage. Because hydrogen gas is generated by the hydrolysis of $NaBH_4$ in the presence of a ruthenium catalyst, two different flow phases (aqueous $NaBH_4$ solution and hydrogen gas) exist in the channel. For experimental studies, a microchannel was fabricated on a silicon wafer substrate, and 100-nm ruthenium catalyst was deposited on three sides of the channel surface. A bubbly flow pattern was observed. The experimental results indicate that the two-phase multiplier increases linearly with the void fraction, which depends on the initial concentration, reaction rate, and flow residence time.

  • This study was focused on the investigation of the distribution of trees which is an important factor for the improvement of the river environment, and the experimental examination of resistant force of trees to the external forces. The investigation of plant distribution performed in 11 major rivers in Korea showed that the willow family grows spontaneously over the whole country. The field experiments on the resistant force of trees were carried out on the 78 trees of 8 species in 3 different sites to estimate whether pulled out trees damage downstream hydraulic structure. The experiments were performed by the method that a backhoe drew trees and the forces were measured when the trees were overturned and pulled out. The analysis of the experimental results showed that there is a linear correlation between the resistant force and DHB (diameter at breast height).

  • One of the important characteristics of a disk valve is the thrust force. This thrust force has close relationship to the clearance between valve and valve seat in the disk valve. When the clearance is very small, it is very important to analyze the thrust force. This paper deals with the variation of the thrust force by comparing the experimental ed results and theoretical results in accordance with d the valve clearance. In case of the theoretical problems, the pressure gradient of the radial flow in a narrowly spaced disks was calculated by Sui Lin and Pai-Mow Lee already. Therefore, the thrust force of the disk valve was computed by utilizing this pressure gradient in the radial flow. In the experiment, the hydraulic oil which has high viscosity was used. Making the comparative study of the calculated results and the experimental results, the characteristics of the thrust force in the disk valve were investigated. The results obtained are as follows: 1. When the disk valve clearance was comparatively small, the experimental values had fairly good agreement with the calculated values independently of inlet pressure and valve size. 2. When the disk valve size was constant in the wide range of the disk valve clearance, the lower the inlet pressure was, the better the agreement between the experimental values and the calculated values was. 3. In case of the small clearance, the thrust force was depended on the outer diameter of the disk valve. In opposite case the thrust force was constant as the disk valve size varied.

  • Studies on visible-light-driven photocatalysis of air pollutants at indoor air quality (IAQ) levels have been limited. Current study investigated visible-light derived photocatalysis with N-doped and S-doped titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) for the control of benzene at indoor levels. Two preparation processes were employed for each of the two types of photocatalyst: urea-Degussa P-25 $TiO_2$ and titania-colloid methods for the N-doped $TiO_2$; and titanium isopropoxid- and tetraisopropoxide-thiourea methods for the S-doped $TiO_2$. Furthermore, two coating methods (EDTA- and acetylacetone-dissolving methods) were tested for both the N-doped and S-doped $TiO_2$. The two coating methods exhibited different photocatalytic degradation efficiency for the N-doped photocatalysts, whereas they did not exhibit any difference for the S-doped photocatalysts. In addition, the two doping processes showed different photocatalytic degradation efficiency for both the S-doped and N-doped photocatalysts. For both the N-doped and S-doped $TiO_2$, the photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) efficiency increased as the hydraulic diameter (HD) decreased. The degradation efficiency determined via a PCO system with visible-light induced $TiO_2$ was lower than that with UV-light induced unmodified $TiO_2$, which was obtained from previous studies. Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that for the photocatalytic annular reactor with the HD of 0.5 cm, PCO efficiency increased up to 52% for the N-doped $TiO_2$ and 60% for the S-doped $TiO_2$. Consequently, when combined with the advantage of visible light use over UV light use, it is suggested that with appropriate HD conditions, the visible-light-assisted photocatalytic systems can also become an important tool for improving IAQ.

  • The use of high-density propellants can provide performance advantages in space launch vehicles by allowing an improved structural ratio due to smaller propellants tanks. The Jet A-1 fuel is currently used in Korean space launch vehicle development and it has lower density than other advanced hydrocarbon fuels such as RP-1 or RG-1. In this paper, the results of hydraulic and combustion tests conducted for the two newly developed densified hydrocarbon fuels are presented and they are compared with the results of Jet A-1. Conclusively, the two densified hydrocarbon fuels presented equivalent or even higher combustion performance compared to the Jet A-1 and the performance difference was found to be more obvious in the injector of external mixing.

  • A theoretical study on gas-liquid two-phase flow flushing systemnitrogen gas to the oil used for existing flushing equipment was conducted on the basis of ISO code so as to improve performance of existing high-temperature oil flushing equipment used in ocean plant facility drying field. For study, we analyzed process simulation results mixed fluid mixing ratio, temperature, Reynolds number and liquid hold up affectcleaning performance after designing oil-nitrogen gas mixture flushing system process. As a result, as the volume flow rate of mixed fluid increases with the tube diameter the volume fraction of the gas phase constant, the liquid fraction difference value at the inlet and outlet of horizontal hydraulic piping increases. It was found that the phase distribution between oil and nitrogen gas bubbles varies depending on the position the pipe lengthdirection. This change in phase distribution is expected to have a significant impact on the clean performance of an oil-nitrogen gas mixture flushing system.

  • Remediation technology becomes an issue in environmental engineering. The vibro-recovery technique is one of popular means to remove pollutants from contaminated soils and groundwater. Using Ultrasonic excitation in soil-fluid medium, it was found that removal efficiency in a mechanical effects was significant. In this paper, therefore, laboratory experiments were conducted on clayey sand soil columns using a probe-type ultrasonic processor. Ultrasonic treatment with simultaneous pumping enhances dislodgement of clay particles, and ultrasonic excitation reduced the proportions of finer particles and thus result in increased hydraulic conductivity significantly. Also, the results provided the changes in grain size distribution curve of the soil due to ultrasonic excitation. The results indicated that the maximum size of particles mobilized by Ultrasonic is about 0.004mm and particles in the size range from 0.04mm to 1.0mm were subjected to fracturing. The economic feasibility of Ultrasonic implementation is considered in power requirement of the generator and maintenance of the horn. At a specified amplitude of vibrations, the power requirement of the generator depends on overburden pressure of the horn, temperature and viscosity of fluid in the soil medium. For comparisons, the requirement of a one inch and two inch diameter horn sonicators are compared with the power required for pumping water from different depths.

  • For the purpose of studying on the seepage characteristics of embedded gravel layer in embankment, laboratory model tests were carried out. The embedded layer under embankment was $19{\sim}26mm$ diameter of gravel and those embankment materials were Saemangum dredged sand, river sand and mixed(1:1) sand with dredged and river one. Those permeability coefficients of three different sands are $5.00{\times}10^{-5}$, $3.00{\times}10^{-4}$, $7.50{\times}10^{-5}m/s$, respectively. Seepage characteristics of these results are as follows; 1) The Reynolds number of water flow through embedded gravel layer in three different permeable soils is less then 10, it is laminar flow. 2) These flow velocities through embedded gravel layer in soils are in proportion to these hydraulic gradients, it is Darcy flow. 3) These Darcian permeability coefficients of water flow through embedded gravel layer in soils show as $2.95{\times}10^{-3}$, $1.38{\times}10^{-2}$, $3.33{\times}10^{-3}$m/s, respectively, by varying permeability of embankment soils and embankment lengths. It is approximately 100 times of those permeability coefficients of embankment materials.
