A Study on the Actuating Device Technology in Guided Weapon System (유도무기체계 구동장치 기술에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, a study on the actuator device technology in guided weapon system development. Hydraulic and pressure, electric motor device had been mostly used, but recently due to high output to weight ratio, pressure actuator device is widely used except for small tactical guided ammunition which needed small power. And now the actuator design concept and technical level is changed because of high mobility of guided ammunition, development of magnetic materials which used new material for requirement of despondence, progress of control and electrodynamics technology, and digitalize and integrity. In this paper we clearly proposed the actuator design criteria and detailed technology development trend for next generation guided weapon system.

Effect of air inflow on the performance of a 50kW-class cross-flow turbine (50kW급 횡류수차 내 공기 유입이 성능에 미치는 영향)

  • Small hydropower has been considered as a solution to resolve the problem of exhaustion of fossil fuel and industrial pollution. In this study, we developed and tested a Cross-Flow Turbine with two guide vanes to optimize the small hydropower for the site condition with large fluctuation of head and flow rate. Furthermore, in the condition of constant inlet head, CFD analysis was carried out to analyze the effect of air suction and valve position on the performance characteristics. The results showed that the air suction can minimize the hydraulic loss caused by the Recirculation flow in the runner passage and flow impact on main shaft so that it can increase the turbine efficiency and output power.

  • The Arabian Gulf region has one of the highest ocean temperatures, reaching above 35 degrees and ambient temperatures over 50 degrees in the summer. Two nuclear power plants (NPP) are being introduced in the region for the first time, one at Bushehr (1,000 MWe PWR plant from Russia), and a much larger one at Barakah (4X1,400 MWe PWR from Korea). Both plants take seawater from the Gulf for condenser cooling, having to modify the secondary/tertiary side cooling systems design by increasing the heat transfer surface area from the country of origin. This paper analyses the secondary side of a typical PWR plant operating under the Rankine cycle with a simplified thermal-hydraulic model. Parametric study of ocean cooling temperatures is conducted to estimate thermal efficiency variations and its associated design changes for the secondary side. Operational safety is reviewed to deliver rated power output with acceptable safety margins in line with technical specifications, mainly in the auxiliary systems together with the cooling water temperature. Impact on the Gulf seawater as the ultimate heat sink is considered negligible, affecting only the adjacent water near the NPP site, when compared to the solar radiation on the sea surface.

Assessing the capability of HEC-RAS coupled 1D-2D model through comparison with 2-dimensional flood models

  • Recent studies show the possibility of more frequent extreme events as a result of the changing climate. These weather extremes, such as excessive rainfall, result to debris flow, river overflow and urban flooding, which post a substantial threat to the community. Therefore, an effective flood model is a crucial tool in flood disaster mitigation. In recent years, a number of flood models has been established; however, the major challenge in developing effective and accurate inundation models is the inconvenience of running multiple models for separate conditions. Among the solutions in recent researches is the development of the combined 1D-2D flood modeling. The coupled 1D-2D river flood modeling allows channel flows to be represented in 1D and the overbank flow to be modeled over two-dimension. To test the efficiency of this approach, this research aims to assess the capability of HEC-RAS model's implementation of the combined 1D-2D hydraulic simulation of river overflow inundation, and compare with the results of GERIS and FLUMENS 2D flood model. Results show similar output to the flood models that had used different methods. This proves the applicability of the HEC-RAS 1D-2D coupling method as a powerful tool in simulating accurate inundation for flood events.

The Control Rod Speed Design for the Nuclear Reactor Power Control Using Optimal Control Theory (최적제어이론에 의한 원자로 제어봉속도의 설계)

  • The state feedback optimal control techniques are used in designing the reactor control system. The mathematical plant model with the temperature feedback effects is established from the one delayed neutron group point kinetics equation and the singly lumped thermal-hydraulic balance equations, and is expressed in terms of state variables. The LQR (Linear Quadratic Regulator) control system is designed, being followed by the LQG (Linear Quadratic Gaussian) design to determine the optimal conditions of rod movement for the desired reactor power responses. And two different servo control schemes, the ordinary feedback system and the order increased regulating system, are proposed for the purpose of input tacking. The general control characteristics such as stability margins and output responses are discussed. Comparing each other, it is found that the order increased regulating system has far better control characteristics than the ordinary feedback system.

Extension of the NEAMS workbench to parallel sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of thermal hydraulic parameters using Dakota and Nek5000

  • With the increasing availability of high-performance computing (HPC) platforms, uncertainty quantification (UQ) and sensitivity analyses (SA) can be efficiently leveraged to optimize design parameters of complex engineering problems using modeling and simulation tools. The workflow involved in such studies heavily relies on HPC resources and hence requires pre-processing and post-processing capabilities of large amounts of data along with remote submission capabilities. The NEAMS Workbench addresses all aspects of the workflows involved in these studies by relying on a user-friendly graphical user interface and a python application program interface. This paper highlights the NEAMS Workbench capabilities by presenting a semiautomated coupling scheme between Dakota and any given package integrated with the NEAMS Workbench, yielding a simplified workflow for users. This new capability is demonstrated by running a SA of a turbulent flow in a pipe using the open-source Nek5000 CFD code. A total of 54 jobs were run on a HPC platform using the remote capabilities of the NEAMS Workbench. The results demonstrate that the semiautomated coupling scheme involving Dakota can be efficiently used for UQ and SA while keeping scripting tasks to a minimum for users.   • Axial piston pump is a significant part in wheeled armored vehicle, for generating hydraulic power of vehicle power system. The Axial Piston Pump is a high-performer, core functional item that is developed and applied to most of the military models in the development of military weapon systems. However, in the case of military equipment, there are conditions of limited size and weight required depending on the operating conditions and the operating environment. Under these conditions, it is required that the performance and the environmental resistance are verified to exert the required output. A unique technology is needed for the development of such equipment both in the present and in the future. Therefore, in this study, mathematical modeling of an axial piston pump is presented as a basic data for securing proprietary technology. In addition, a simulation model is designed and compared with the models of six kinds of pistons through simulation. It was established that when the number of pistons of the axial piston pump, which is the development objective, is seven, the model is suitable for the wheeled armored vehicle.

Experimental and theoretical justification of passive heat removal system for irradiated fuel assemblies of the nuclear research reactor in a spent fuel pool

  • The safety of nuclear installations is largely determined by the tightness of fuel elements cladding. As the Fukushima nuclear accident showed, the main task in case of loss of power supply is to ensure reliable removal of residual heat release from spent fuel pool (SFP) with irradiated fuel assemblies (IFAs). The paper presents the results of calculated-experimental studies and thermal-hydraulic modeling of temperature storage modes of IFAs in SFP. Experimental studies of SFP's temperature regime and calculated evaluation of residual heat removal due to the thermal conductivity of building structures surrounding the SFP were performed. To ensure the safe operation of research reactors, it's necessary to know the IFA's residual heat power (RHP) in the reactor and SFP, which is determined depending on the operating time of fuel assemblies (FAs) and the IFAs calculated holding time. The FAs operating time depends on the reactor energy output. The IFAs calculated holding time is determined by the fuel burnup, U-235 mass in the fuel, and reactor utilization factor. The IFAs fuel burnup was calculated using the MCU-PTR program. Also presented are the RHP's calculation results using some of the empirical dependencies. The concept of a passive heat removal system (PHRS) based on thermosyphon's operating principle was proposed.

A Study on Simscape based 6DOF Field Robot Simulation Model (Simscape 기반 6자유도 필드로봇 시뮬레이션 모델에 관한 연구)

  • Field robots operate in various areas, including construction, agriculture, forestry and manufacturing. Typical tasks of field robots used in various areas include excavation, flattening, and demolition. Such tasks are often accomplished in narrow alleys or indoors. In the case of field robots, there is a limit to working in a small space. Thus, to compensate for these shortcomings, many field robots equipped with Tiltrotators have recently been observed. The advantages of Tiltrotator are improved task efficiency and reduced operating time by reducing unnecessary behavior. We need simulation models that can improve the ability of new people to work and simulate tasks in advance. Thus, in this paper, we developed a simscape-based simulation model and modeling of 6DOF systems for field robots equipped with Tiltrotator. Dynamic modeling of field robot 3D models using Simcape multibody and hydraulic systems of field robots using Simcape Hydraulics were modeled. We applied a PID controller to create a control system that operates along the input angle. Simulation results show that errors occur when comparing input and output angles, but overall, they move along input angles.

A Study of a Hydraulic Excavator's Test to Verify of Payload Estimation by Bucket's Motion Equation (유압 굴착기 실험을 통한 작업량 추정법 확인에 관한 연구)

  • It is important to measure the excavator's work productivity that estimates the bucket's payloads on a process. If the bucket isn't filled at every working cycle, the excavator's operator has to drive the machine more to achieve his work quota. If bucket is filled over with the load, the other way around, the transferred object has to spread out on the workplace. That causes additional work to clean the site. This paper proposes a method that can estimate the bucket's payload to improve the excavator's work productivity. This method assumes that the excavator is a lumped mass system. And it uses a 3 points angle (boom link, arm link, swing) and 2 points pressure (boom cylinder's input port and output port) of measurable data. Depending on assumptions, the bucket's payload can be calculated by the payload's motion equation. And this suggested method can be verified by simple experiments.
