  • The hydraulic loading system real-time simulator using a PC and I/O interface board is developed to simulate the dynamic characteristics of hydraulic loading system in real time. The simulator receives the digital on-off control signals generated by the operator through the D/I channels, updates the state and output variables of the hydraulic loading system responding to the input signals and draw the moving pictuters of the lift cylinder, lift arm and loading box on the PC monitor in real time. Also, the operator can observe the displacement and pressure of cylinder, the rotatinal angle, reaction force, and safety factors of lift arm representing the operation of hydraulic loading system through the PC monitor in real time. The real-time simulator can be a very useful tool to design industrial dynamic systems and feel the goodness of the system operation since the operator can observe the moving pictures of the operating system in real time as he operates the real time simulator.

  • Air-drived rotating biological contactor (RBC) system, which is effective method in filtering performance, was tested for the nitrification capacity in a recirculating system. At ammonia concentrations between 0.029 and 0.528 mg/l, the effect of ammonia loading rate on ammonia removal rate at three different hydraulic loading rates could be defined by the following firstorder regression models: Hydraulic loading rate of $14.8 m^3/m^3/day:\;y=39.2\times+3.4 (r^2=0.9137)$, Hydraulic loading rate of $26.5 m^3/m^3/day: y=53.3\times+4.0 (r^2=0.8686)$, Hydraulic loading rate of $37.3 m^3/m^3/day: y=58.4\times+4.2 (r^2=0.7755)$, where, $\times$ is ammonia loading rate (mg/l), y is ammonia removal rate $(g/m^3/day)$, The equations showed the optimal ammonia removal rate at the hydraulic loading rate of $26.5m^3/m^3/day$. Below the ammonia concentration of 2.72 mg/l, first-order regression models between ammonia loading rate and ammonia removal rate at three different rates of speed are defined as follows: Rotational speed of $0.75 rpm: y=28.5\times+4.7 (r^2=0.9143)$, Rotational speed of $1.0 rpm: y=33.6\times+8.4 (r^2=0.9534)$, Rotational speed of $2.0 rpm: y=28.9\times+3.6 (r^2=0.9488)$, where, x is ammonia loading rate (mg/l), y is ammonia removal rate $(g/m^3day)$. The equations show the ammonia removal rate at the rotational speed of 1.0 rpm is significantly higher than that at the rotational speed of either 0.75 rpm or 2.0 rpm (P<0.05).

  • The objective of study was to examine to transient response of hydraulic shock loading in activated sludge process for treatment of municipal sewage. The general experiment approach was to operate the system under steady-state(pre-shock), then to apply step changes during 24hours in fourfold hydraulic shock loading at the same organic loading. Performance was assessed in both the transient state and the new steady-state(post-shock). Three bench scale activated sludge reactors were operated to investigate the effect of fourfold hydraulic shock loading on TSS and COD removal efficiency. In activated sludge reactors operated with 13hours and 7hours of HRT, effluent quality of all reactors was not changed for few effects, and also showed no foaming and no sludge bulking. Those results are the same as sludge withdrawn reactors. The effect of fourfold hydraulic shock loading on the activated sludge reactors operated with 3hours of HRT was most severe. The effluent quality was deteriorated significantly and generate foaming in reactors. Less than 24hours after the fourfold shock loading applied, the activated sludge system seemed to attain a new steady-state condition as show by effluent.

  • The objective of this study was to examine and compare to transient response to quantitative and hydraulic shocks which produce equal changes in mass rate of organic feed in aerobic fixed-film process. The general experimental approach was to operate the system at several growth rates under steady-state(pre-shock) conditions, then to apply step changes during day 3 in dilution rate(hydraulic shock) , or feed concentration(Quantitative shock) at the same organic mass loading rate. Performance was assessed in both the transient state and the new steady-state (post- shock). Shock load of different type did not produced equivalent disruptions of effluent quality for equal increases in mass loading rate. Based on effluent concentrations, a hydraulic and a Quantitative shock at the same mass loading caused equal increase in total effluent COD, but the increase was primarily a result of suspended solids the hydraulic shock and COD in the quantitative shock. The time which effluent COD came to peak values were about 32~48 hours at the low organic loads and 52 ~ 72 hours at the high organic loads, respectively A quantitative shock produced a much greater increase in effluent COD than did a hydraulic shock at the same mass loading. Mean and peak values of effluent concentration weve increased in 2.8~4.2 times at low organic loading rate, 5.2~6.6 times at the high organic loading rate, respectively. Key words : Aerobic fixed-film reactor, Quantitative shock, hydraulic shock, mass loading rate.

  • In this study, on-site sewage treatment tests were conducted using the Absorbent Biofilter System (ABS) under different hydraulic loading rates to examine its treatment characteristics and efficiencies and to determine its feasibility as a small on-site sewage treatment system in a rural area. Results showed that the removal rates of BOD and SS were satisfactory at hydraulic loading rates of 100~150 cm/day, meeting the Korean effluent water quality standards for the riparian zone (10 mg/L). In the case of nutrients (N, P), however, the system did not perform well, necessitating further improvement for nutrient removal. A comparative analysis indicated that as a small on-site sewage treatment system, the ABS would be more suitable than other treatment systems in terms of performance stability, maintenance requirement, and cost-effectiveness and could be applied as an alternative treatment system in Korean rural areas.

  • To meet the increasing demand from various fishing fields for training of fishing equipment operators, a fishing winch simulator was designed to train maritime students in the correct and safe operation of hydraulic winches under various load conditions related to fishing operations. The aim of this study is to describe the basic dynamic characteristics of the newly developed hydraulic fishing winch simulator and particularly to analyze the mechanical responses produced on the winch operation controls. The winch simulator consists of two winch units, a computer control and data acquisition system, a control consol and other associated mechanisms. When one winch is in hauling mode, the other one will always be in loading mode. The revolution speed of the hauling winch was controlled by a proportional directional control valve, and the braking torque of the loading winch was controlled by a proportional pressure control valve. The simulation experiments indicated that the dynamic characteristics of the hauling winch followed the braking response characteristics of the loading winch. The tests also showed that the warp speed and tension linearly depend on the pressure differential across the motor of the loading winch controlled by operating the proportional pressure control valve during the hauling operation. The experience gained from various training courses showed that the fishing winch simulator was very realistic and it was valuable for training novice winch operators. The results of the winch simulation exercise were recorded and used to evaluate the training on the operation and handling of the winch system. From these test results, we concluded that the tension acting on the warp during hauling operations can successfully be simulated by controlling the pressure differential across the motor with step changes of the control input signal to the proportional pressure control valve of the loading winch.

  • The phased isolation intra-clarifier ditch system used in this study is a simplified novel process enhancing simultaneous removal of biological nitrogen and phosphorus in municipal wastewater in terms of elimination of additional pre-anaerobic reactor, external clarifier, recycle of sludge, and nitrified effluent recirculation by employing intrachannel clarifier. Laboratory-scale phased isolation ditch system was used to assess the treatability on municipal wastewater. When the system was operated at the HRTs of 6~12hours, SRTs of 9~31days, and cycle times of 2~8hours, the system showed removals of BOD, TN, and TP as high as 88~97%, 70~84%, and 65~90%, respectively. The rainfall in Korea is generally concentrated in summer because of site-specific characteristics. Especially, the wet season has set in on June to August. In combined sewers, seasonal variations are primarily a function of the amount of stormwater that enters the system. In order to investigate the effect of hydraulic shock loading on system performance, the laboratory-scale system was operated at an HRT of 6hours (two times of influent flowrate) during two cycles (8hours). The system performance slightly decreased by increasing of influent flowrate and decreasing of system HRT. Nitrification efficiency and TN removal were slightly decreased by increasing of influent flowrate (decreasing of system HRT), whereas, the denitrification was not affected by hydraulic shock loading. However, the higher system performance could be achieved again after four cycles. Thus, the phased isolation technology for enhanced biological nutrient removal in medium- and small-scale wastewater treatment plants suffering fluctuation of influent quality and flowrate.

  • Laboratory-scale experiments were conducted using a three-stage rotating biological contactor unit followed by lime precipitation and sedimentation with effluent recycle to the first stage. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of hydraulic loadings of 0.031-0.076 $m^3/m^2/d and recycle ratio of 1 to 3 on the simultaneous removal of organics and nutrients from domestic wastewater. Lime was added to maintain pH of 10.4-11.0 in the coagulation-flocculation reactor. Results showed that the highest nitrogen removal rate of 70.5% occurred at the lower hydraulic loading of 0.031 $m^3/m^2/d at a recirculation rate of 300%, and similarly, highest nitrification occurred at the same hydraulic loading and recycle ratio. Concentration of ammonia nitrogen in the effluent was less than 1 mg/l at the same operating conditions for higher nitrogen removal. Whereas, high BOD and COD removal was observed at hydraulic loading rate of 0.054 $m^3/m^2/d, and high removal of organic matter was evident from the consistent low COD and BOD value. Results obtained from the operating condition of higher loading rate, 300% of recycle rate showed the highest removals. Increasing in recycle rate and hydraulic loading rate increased the volatile solids fraction of the sludges generated to the extent of 47% at 0.076 $m^3/m^2/d hydraulic loading and 300% recirculation rate. Since pH in the flocculator was maintained at the pH of 10.4-11.0, above 90% removal of phosphorus was obtained. Average concentration of suspended solids was always maintained over 40 mg/l in the effluent. Therefore an RBC unit operating at a hydraulic loading near 0.031 $m^3/m^2/d with a recycle rate of 300% is a viable and feasible alternate conditions to produce an effluent with relative low organic matter and phosphorus, provided that there is a neutralization unit to control the pH and SS of the effluent.

  • Stability of reactor and effect on biofilm characteristics were investigated by varying the hydraulic residence time in an inverse fluidized bed biofilm reactor(IFBBR). The SCOD removal efficiency was maintained above 90 % in the HRT range of 12hr to 2hr, but the TCOD removal efficiency was dropped down to 50% because of biomass detachment from overgrown bioparticles. The reactor was stably operated up to the conditions of HRT of 2hr and F/M ratio of 4.5kgCOD/$m^3$/day, but above the range there was an abrupt increase of filamentous microorganisms. The optimum biofilm thickness and the biofilm dry density in this experiment were shown as $200\mu\textrm{m}$ and $0.08 g/cm^3$, respectively. The substrate removal rate of this system was found as 1st order because the biofilm was maintained slightly thin by the increased hydraulic loading rate.
