  • A damper is a hydraulic device designed to absorb or eliminate shock impulses which is acting on the sprung mass of car body. It converts the kinetic energy of the shock into another form of energy, typically heat. The main mechanism for providing damping is by shearing the hydraulic fluid as it flows through restrictions. Since the damping mechanism depends on the flow restrictions, these restrictions are very important in damper design. Damper engineers often try several combinations of valve shims, piston orifices and bleed orifices before finding the best combination for a particular setup on a car. Therefore, the ability to tune a damper properly without testing is of great interest in damper design. For this reason, many previous researches have been done on modeling and simulation of the damper. This paper explains a genetic algorithm method to find the optimal parameters for the design objective and the simulation results agree well with the targeted damping characteristics.

  • This paper presents a new type of hydraulic servo chllinder which is characterized by its simple construction and an ubtegrated feedback mechanism. Piston position of the cylinder is controlled by eletrical input and mechamical feedback deduced from its own structure. Hydraulic pressure in each cylinder room is controlled by a poppet valve. The poppet is activated by a solenoid and is linked to the piston. Solenoid input current pulls up the poppet, which results in pressure drop and thus piston motion. The piston motion generates pull down force on the poppet by the linkage and the motion stops at equilibrium. In that way the piston position is controlled by an expernal input current. Characteristics of the servo cylinder is verified by stability analysis, tranient vehavior and steady state positing for step input. Design parameter analyses have been executed by derivation of analytical approximate solutions and by computer simulations. A prototype hydraulic servo cylinder is developed and tested. The experimental results show successful function of the servo cylinder and consistency with the theoritical results.

  • Because a hydraulic actuator has high power and force densities, this allows the weight of the robot's limbs to be reduced. This allows for good dynamic characteristics and high energy efficiency. Thus, hydraulic actuators are used in some exoskeleton robots and quadrupedal robots that require high torque. Force control is useful for robot compliance with a user or environment. However, force control of a hydraulic robot is difficult because a hydraulic servo system is highly nonlinear from a control perspective. In this study, a nonlinear model was used to develop a simulation program for a hydraulic servo system consisting of a servo valve, transmission lines, and a cylinder. The problems and considerations with regard to the force control performance for a hydraulic servo system were investigated. A force control method using the nonlinear model was proposed, and its effect was evaluated with the simulation program.

  • Recently the maximum speed becomes the most important performance in high speed train. But the speed up of train will not give the passenger good riding comfort. The semi-active suspension system by using variable damper with hydraulic solenoid valve is used to solve this problem. But the variable damper with hydraulic solenoid valve requires tank for supplying fluid. In this study, the MR(Magneto Rheological) damper was considered instead of hydraulic variable damper in order to improve riding comfort. Dynamic simulation was conducted for semi-active suspension system with MR damper was made by using Matlab-Simulink S/W. According to control strategy of MR damper for improving ride comfort in railway vehicle, The riding comfort of the railway vehicle with semi-active suspension system was analyzed and compared with conventional suspension system by using the program.

  • In this paper, the frequency response characteristics of the velocity controlled EHS system obtained by linear simulation method, nonlinear simulation method, and experimentation are compared one another, in order to verify propriety of the linearization method in case of analysis of hydraulic systems. The Bode diagrams are obtained by transforming time domain data of experimental results and nonlinear simulated ones with Fourier transform. The results of nonlinear simulation are more similar to the frequency response of the real systems than those of linear simulation. It is found that nonlinearity of hydraulic systems is mainly occurred from servo valve, and nonlinearity is increased as displacement of servo valve spool increases.

  • We have developed a part of hydraulic stroke sensing cylinder using magnetic sensor that can detect each position under severe construction fields. In this paper, for evaluating the developed cylinder under various environment condition, thermal control systems and two hydraulic systems to be coupled consist of. The former is composed of an heater case, temperature sensor, and interface circuits which include SCR(silicon controlled rectifier) for the control of the voltage's phase. The latter is composed of an hydraulic cylinder for position control with solenoid valve (ON/OFF motion) and a load cylinder with proportional reducing valve. To obtain the various performance evaluation, it is carried out under high temperature condition in thermal system controlled by using Ziegler-Nichols PID tuning method and artificial disturbances such as impulse or constant force. The results show that the developed cylinder has good performance under the various environment condition.

  • An in-process method of diagnosing the spool wear of hydraulic servovalves was explored. The diagnostic method discussed in this paper is for force-control hydraulic servo systems. The key principle used is that pressure sensitivity of a servovalve drops as the valve spool wears out so that it is possible to determine the spool condition by monitoring pressure sensitivity. A diagnostic algorithm was developed and evaluated through numerical simulation and experiments. Two major steps of diagnosis are the evaluation of null bias of the servovalve and the approximation of pressure sensitivity, both of which could be successfully done during normal operation of a servo system. The difference between a new servovalve and a worn valve could be clearly detected in-process, and the diagnostic test was found to be repeatable.

  • Recently, hydraulic motor is getting the spotlight. It is resulted from rapid civil engineering public works by a lot of developing countries around the world. In this study, we divided the valves which are affixed in the hydraulic motor into some parts, implemented them through computer simulation, verified validation of each component, and analyzed behavior adding driving condition. Through the analyzed results with general driving condition, we found the reason why behavior became unstable as the motor had started spinning. Through the analyzed results with tough driving condition, we verified that the valve works well with it's production purpose.

  • The performance improvement of a small-size integrated-type fully hydraulic breaker is studied in this paper. Mathematical modeling of the breaker is established and verified by experiment. Through sensitivity analysis using AMESim, the key design parameters are selected and nearly optimized to maximize the impact energy as well as to improve the dynamic characteristics such as the piston upper chamber pressure, piston and valve displacements. As a result, the impact energy, blows per minute(bpm) and output power are increased by 52.9%, 1%, and 55.6%, respectively compared with the current design. The dynamic characteristics of the piston upper chamber pressure, piston and valve displacements are also improved by the design change.

  • Energy consumption of conventional hydraulic excavators controlled by MCV is considerable when negative load is applied because the meter orifice and meter-out orifice are machined in one spool. Therefore, IMV is introduced to save energy use of hydraulic excavators, but existing hydraulic excavators have various advantages so it is difficult to make a clear comparison. In this study, we compare the use of an existing MCV excavator that has many advantages such as negative control, and IMV for boom up and down operation, and if IMV is used to save energy, we will examine the cause. If possible, for comparability under the same conditions, both systems use pressure balance valves to minimize power consumption when not using power in the actuator. The orifice area at each notch of each valve is calculated, and energy saving is verified by comparing the two systems through simulation.
