The evaluation of Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical (THM) coupling behavior is important for the development of underground space for various purposes. For a high-level radioactive waste repository excavated in a deep underground rock mass, the accurate prediction of the complex THM behavior is essential for the long-term safety and stability assessment. In order to develop reliable THM analysis techniques effectively, an international cooperation project, Development of Coupled models and their Validation against Experiments (DECOVALEX), was carried out. In DECOVALEX-2015 Task B2, the in situ THM experiment that was conducted at Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory(URL) by Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), was modeled by the research teams from the participating countries. In this study, a THM coupling technique that combined TOUGH2 and FLAC3D was developed and applied to the THM analysis for the in situ experiment, in which rock, buffer, backfill, sand, and heater were installed. With the assistance of an artificial neural network, the boundary conditions for the experiment could be adequately implemented in the modeling. The thermal, hydraulic, and mechanical results from the modeling were compared with the measurements from the in situ THM experiment. The predicted buffer temperature from the THM modelling was about $10^{\circ}C$ higher than measurement near by the overpack. At the other locations far from the overpack, modelling predicted slightly lower temperature than measurement. Even though the magnitude of pressure from the modeling was different from the measurements, the general trends of the variation with time were found to be similar.
In this study, deformation behavior of existing concrete face rockfill dam, which is raised to a certain height to enhance storage capacity or to improve hydraulic and hydrologic stability, is examined using numerical analysis method. The results obtained from FEM analysis show a possibility that additional fill at downstram slope of existing CFRD dam body may lead undesirable deformations and stresses in existing dam body, especially in face concrete, such as settlements in upper part and bulging in lower part, excessive bending moments, and eventualy tensile cracks. Therefore, in designing multi-staged raising construction of CFRD, it is essential to consider deformations and stresses to be developed within and between exisiting dam body and added parts due to additional fill, and to prepare a proper measure to prevent abnormal deformations and stresses in the dam body including added parts.

The bank revetment work which is conducted on the slope of river bank to protect against flowing water as a geotechnical structure has been applied as an average value of critical tractive force based on domestic and international standard design. Currently, an appropriate evaluation is needed for the hydraulic stability and geotechnical behavior analysis of bank revetments because of the effects of climate change and ambiguous design criterion. This study has compared the critical tractive forces of soil improvement material and conventional materials used for the bank revetment work. Through various experiments, the shear strength of mixtures with soil improvement material was investigated by curing time and mixture ratio. It was found that the critical tractive force of the mixture obtained from a scour test is suitable to the reinforcement of the slope of river bank which has problems such as seepage erosion and scour.

This study examines the potential restoration of abandoned channels of the Mangyeong River in South Korea. To analyze the morphological changes and equilibrium conditions, a flow duration analysis was performed to obtain the discharge of 255 m3/s with a recurrence interval of 1.5 year. It is a gravel-bed stream with a median bed diameter of 36 mm. The reach-averaged results using HEC-RAS showed that the top width is 244 m, the mean flow depth is 1.11 m, the width/depth ratio is very high at 277, the channel velocity is 1.18 m/s, and the Froude number is also high at 0.42. The hydraulic parameters vary in the vicinity of the three sills which control the bed elevation. The total sediment load is 6,500 tons per day and the equivalent sediment concentration is 240 mg/l. The Engelund-Hansen method was closer to the field measurements than any other method. The bed material coarser than 33 mm will not move. The methods of Julien-Wargadalam and Lacey gave an equilibrium channel width of 83 m and 77 m respectively, which demonstrates that the Mangyeong River is currently very wide and shallow. The planform geometry for the Mangyeong River is definitely straight with a sinuosity as low as 1.03. The thalweg and mean bed elevation profiles were analyzed using field measurements in 1976, 1993 and 2009. The measured profiles indicated that the channel has degraded about 2 m since 1976. The coarse gravel material and large width-depth ratio increase the stability of the bed material in this reach.
To develop the optimal design method for the longline type scallop culturing facilities in the open sea numerical calculations and hydraulic model experiments are carried out for the stability and function optimization. Using the results for the motion and tension of the facilities, stable design concepts and effects of motion control system by vertical anchor and resistance discs art discussed. The results of this study that can be applied to the design are as follows: 1) Total external forces by design wave $(H_{1/3}\;=\;6,7\;m,\;T_{1/3}\;=\;12sec)$ at the coastal waters of Jumunjin for unit facility (one main line) are estimated to 5-20 tons, and required anchor weights are 10-40 tons in the case of 2-point mooring system. Though the present facilities are stable to steady currents, but is unstable to the extreme wave condition of return period of 10 years. 2) The dimensions and depth of array systems must be designed considering the ecological environments as well as the physical characteristics including the mooring and holding forces that are proportional to the length and relative depth of main line to wave length, and the number of buoys and nets. 3) Oscillation of the facility is influenced by water particle motion and the weight of hanging net, and is excited at both edge, especially at the lee side. To reduce the motion of the nets, the vertical anchoring system and the resistence disc method are recommended by the experimental results, 4) The damage of rope near the anchor by abrasion should be prevented using the ring-type connection parts or anchor chains.

The river bank is one of the most important structure of fluvial hydraulic structure. Because the breaking of river bank is the cause of calamity, the durability and stability of river bank an very important factors. The breaking of river bank is the cause of the overflow of flood and the leakage of river bank. In this study, we investigated the leakage of river bank using the resistivity probing and estimated the volume of leakage using the weighted residual method The study basin of this study is the upstream of Sumji river basin and the factor of river bank is length 300 m and berm 2.0 m and width 4.5 m and height 4 m. We evaluated the leakage of river basin using using the resistivity probing and estimated the leakage volume using the weighted residual method. The result of this study, the leakage of river bank generated at the point of 39~45 m 80~90 m. 218~222 m. 214~250 m and the type of leakage is the rectangle and the polygon. And the leakage volume of this points evaluated 2.7$\times$$10^{-3}$$\textrm{m}^3$/sec.

A novel pneumatic artificial muscle actuator (PAM actuator), which has achieved increased popularity to provide the advantages such as high strength and high power/weight ratio, low cost, compactness, ease of maintenance, cleanliness, readily available and cheap power source, inherent safety and mobility assistance to humans performing tasks, has been regarded during the recent decades as an interesting alternative to hydraulic and electric actuators. However, some limitations still exist, such as the air compressibility and the lack of damping ability of the actuator bring the dynamic delay of the pressure response and cause the oscillatory motion. Then it is not easy to realize the performance of transient response of pneumatic artificial muscle manipulator (PAM manipulator) due to the changes in the external inertia load with high speed. In order to realize satisfactory control performance, a variable damper-MagnetoRheological Brake (MRB), is equipped to the joint of the manipulator. Superb mixture of conventional PID controller and a phase plane switching control method brings us a novel controller. This proposed controller is appropriate for a kind of plants with nonlinearity, uncertainties and disturbances. The experiments were carried out in practical PAM manipulator and the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm was demonstrated through experiments, which had proved that the stability of the manipulator can be improved greatly in a high gain control by using MRB with phase plane switching control method and without regard for the changes of external inertia loads.
Pedogenic hematite is a well known agent for sink of pollutants and nutrients and for aggregation of particles in soils. Changes in physical and chemical properties of two sandy loam soils (Anahuac and Crowley soils) from the Southern Coastal Plain, the United States of America, were tested after adding finely ground crystalline hematite prepared for drilling fluid weighting material. There was an increase in hydraulic conductivity (HC) of the soils with addition of up to 3% by weight of hematite but a decrease in HC with addition of more hematite. The aggregate stability (AS) of the soils was not affected by adding hematite. Anahuac soil with higher content of organic matter and lower sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) had higher values of HC and AS than Crowley soil. Adding hematite also resulted in a slight increase in zinc (Zn) adsorption by the soils, but had no influence on the adsorption of phosphate.
This paper presents an investigation of the ground response of a gob-side gateroad suffering mining stress induced by a 21 m-thick coal seam extraction. A field observation, including entry convergence and stress changes monitoring, was first conducted in the tailgate 8209. The observation results of entry convergence showed that, during the adjacent panel 8210 retreating period, the deformation of the gob-side gateroad experienced a continuous increase stage, subsequently, an accelerating increase stage, and finally, a slow increase stage. However, strong ground response, including roof bending deflection, rib extrusion and floor heave, occurred during the current panel 8209 retreating period, and the maximum floor heave reached 1530 mm. The stress changes within coal mass of the two ribs demonstrated that the gateroad was always located in the stress concentrated area, which responsible for the strong response of the tailgate 8209. Subsequently, a hydraulic fracture technique was proposed to pre-fracture the two hard roofs above the tailgate 8209, thus decreasing the induced disturbance on the tailgate. The validity of the above roof treatment was verified via field application. The finding of this study could be a reference for understanding the stability control of the gob-side gateroad in extra thick coal seams mining.

This study analyzed characteristics of natural and human environments in Chuncheon's Gongji stream, and suggested nature-friendly planning strategies for self-purification of water quality, biodiversity improvement and conservative waterfront recreation. The environmental analysis included streambed structures, floodplain soils, water quality, vegetation, wildlife, and human facilities. Natural colonization of vegetation for the middle section of the study stream was obstructed by a straightened concrete revetment of baseflow channel, and vehicle movement and concrete parking lots across the floodplain. These human disturbances also deteriorated the naturalness of the stream landscape and limited habitation of bird species. However, natural sedimented wetlands in half of the channel width for the lower section of the stream contributed to a desirable vegetational landscape and greater bird occurrence. Based on BOD measurements, water quality of the stream fell under class $II{\sim}III$ of the stream water-quality standard, but it was worse around sewage outlets due to incomplete sewage collection especially during the dry season. Dominant fish species included typical inhabitants of good water-quality streams that are tolerant of adverse habitat changes. Nature-friendly planning strategies were established based on analysis of the environmental characteristics. They focused on not merely spatial zoning and layout divided into four zones - preservation, partial preservation, conservation and use -, but close-to-nature channel revetment techniques, natural water-purification facilities, biotope diversification, and water-friendly recreation and circulation. Strategies pursued both renewal of stream naturalness and hydraulic stability of streamflow by minimizing transformation of natural channel micro-topography and biotope, and by reflecting natural traces of streambed structures such as revetment scour and sedimentation.
