  • The Kaplan turbine model has been tested and analyzed. The blade angle and the guide vane opening of the turbine model were designed to be varied according to the best combination of guide vane and runner blade opening. When the changes in head and output were comparatively large, the efficiency drop were small, so the efficiency characteristics and stability of the entire operating condition were maintained in good condition. These results showed that the developed model in this study will be suitable for small hydropower stations with large changes In head and load such as agricultural reservoir.

  • Sizing the tube inlet orifice of a Once-Through Steam Generator (OTSG) is important to protect the integrity of the tubes from thermal cycling and vibration wear. In this study, a new sizing criterion is proposed for the tube inlet orifice to suppress the parallel channel instability in an OTSG. A perturbation method is used to capture the essential parts of the thermal-hydraulic phenomena of the parallel channel instability. The perturbation model of the heat transfer regime boundaries is identified as a missing part in existing models for sizing the OTSG tube inlet orifice. Limitations and deficiency of the existing models are identified and the reasons for the limitations are explained. The newly proposed model can be utilized to size the tube inlet orifice to suppress the parallel channel instability without excessive engineering margin.

  • The present paper studies the thermal-hydraulic behaviour of the rectangular supercritical natural circulation loop (SCNCL) using numerical model of one dimensional. Then the results of this model is confirmed with experimental and benchmark results. Variations with several geometric parameters like loop diameter, riser length, and heater length and operating conditions like heater inlet enthalpy, pressure, friction factor, and inlet and exit loss coefficient on steady-state performance are investigated for various orientations like HHHC, HHVC, VHVC and VHHC of the heater and cooler. The chances of existing static instability (Ledinegg excursion) has been investigated, which reveals that it can arise only in a low inlet enthalpy condition, far from the suggested various orientations of heater and cooler.

  • For the safe disposal of high-level radioactive waste using Engineered Barrier Systems (EBS), bentonite buffer is used by its high swelling capability and low hydraulic conductivity. When the bentonite buffer is contacted to heated pore water containing ions by radioactive decay, chemical alterations of minerals such as illitization reaction occur. Illitization of bentonite indicates the alteration of expandable smectite into non-expandable illite, which threatens the stability and integrity of EBS. This study intends to provide a thorough review on the information underlying in the illitization of bentonite, by covering basic clay mineralogy, smectite expansion, mechanisms and observation of illitization, and illitization in EBS. Since understanding of smectite illitization is crucial for securing the safety and integrity of nuclear waste disposal systems using bentonite buffer, this thorough review study is expected to provide essential and concise information for the preventive EBS design.

  • Based on the extended spatial mobilization plane (SMP) criterion, we present an elastic-brittle-plastic solution for an axisymmetric cylindrical tunnel. The influences of the intermediate principal compressive stress and material strain-softening behavior are considered. Closed-form formulas for the critical support force, radius of plastic zone, and distributions of stress and displacement in surrounding rock are proposed. The elastic-plastic solution based on SMP is compared with the Kastner solution to verify the credibility of the obtained elastic-plastic solution. The elastic-brittle-plastic solution following the SMP criterion and the current solution based on the Mohr-Coulomb criterion are also compared. The rock strain-softening rate and the intermediate principal stress affect the stability of the surrounding rock. The results provide guidance for optimizing the design of support systems for tunnels.

  • The extended Tanimoto formula has been widely used to estimate the stability for the toe protection of the composite structure. However, the extended Tanimoto formula usually over-estimates armor weight when the incident waves approach the structure obliquely because the formula incident originally considered the normally incident wave cases. In this study, three-dimensional hydraulic model experiments were conducted to investigate the horizontal wave velocity under monochromatic and random wave conditions to investigate the prediction capability of the extended Tanimoto formula under the different incident wave angle conditions. The maximum horizontal wave velocity was measured near the toe for the normally incident wave condition. In the case of obliquely incident waves, the maximum horizontal wave velocity was measured under the stem wave generation condition. The results of the experiments showed a good agreement with the results by Takahashi et al.

  • A transient analysis on temperatures of fuel and oil in hydraulic and lubrication systems in an aircraft was studied using the finite difference method. Numerical calculation was performed by an explicit method with modified Dufort-Frankel scheme. Among various missions, air superiority mission was considered as a mission model with 20% hot day ambient condition in subsonic region. The ambience of the aircraft was assumed as turbulent flow. Convective heat transfer coefficient were used in calculating heat transfer between the aircraft surface and the ambience. For an aircraft on the ground, an empirical equation represented as a function of free-stream air velocity was used. And the heat transfer coefficient for flat plate turbulent flow suggested by Eckert was employed for in-flight phases. The governing equations used in this analysis are the mass and energy conservation equations on fuel and oils. Here, analysis of fuel and oil temperature in the engine was not carried out. As a result of this analysis, the ground operation phase has shown the highest temperature and the largest rate of temperature increase among overall mission phases. Also, it is shown that fuel flow rate through fuel/oil heat exchanger plays an important role in temperature change of fuel and oil. This analysis could be an important part of studies to ensure thermal stability of the aircraft and can be applicable to thermal design of the aircraft fuel system.
