In recent years, technology is rapidly changing to support new service consumption and distribution models in multimedia service systems and hybrid delivery of media services is a key factor for enabling next generation multimedia services. This phenomenon can lead to rapidly increasing network traffic and ultimately has a direct and aggravating effect on the user's quality of service (QOS). To address the issue, we propose a novel system architecture to provide smart hybrid media services efficiently. The architecture is designed to apply the software-defined networking (SDN) method, detect changes in traffic, and combine the data, including user data, service features, and computation node status, to provide a service schedule that is suitable for the current state. To this end, the proposed architecture is based on 2-level scheduling, where Level-1 scheduling is responsible for the best network path and a computation node for processing the user request, whereas Level-2 scheduling deals with individual service requests that arrived at the computation node. This paper describes the overall concept of the architecture, as well as the functions of each component. In addition, this paper describes potential scenarios that demonstrate how this architecture could provide services more efficiently than current media-service architectures.

Distributed mobility management (DMM) does not use a centralized device. Its mobility functions are distributed among routers; therefore, the mobility services are not limited to the performance and reliability of specific mobility management equipment. The DMM scheme has been studied as a partially distributed architecture, which distributes only a packet delivery domain in combination with the software defined network (SDN) technology that separates the packet delivery and control areas. Particularly, a separated control area is advantageous in introducing a new service, thereby optimizing the network by recognizing the entire network situation and taking an optimal decision. The SDN-based mobility management scheme is studied as a method to optimize the packet delivery path whenever a mobile node moves; however, it results in excessive signaling processing cost. To reduce the high signaling cost, we propose a hybrid distributed mobility management method and analyze its performance mathematically.
The Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) has been used for a long time in campus and enterprise networks as the most popular network virtualization solution. Due to the benefits and advantages achieved by using VLAN, network operators and administrators have been using it for constructing their networks up until now and have even extended it to manage the networking in a cloud computing system. However, their configuration is a complex, tedious, time-consuming, and error-prone process. Since Software Defined Networking (SDN) features the centralized network management and network programmability, it is a promising solution for handling the aforementioned challenges in VLAN management. In this paper, we first introduce a new architecture for campus and enterprise networks by leveraging SDN and OpenFlow. Next, we have designed and implemented an application for easily managing and flexibly troubleshooting the VLANs in this architecture. This application supports both static VLAN and dynamic VLAN configurations. In addition, we discuss the hybrid-mode operation where the packet processing is involved by both the OpenFlow control plane and the traditional control plane. By deploying a real test-bed prototype, we illustrate how our system works and then evaluate the network latency in dynamic VLAN operation.

Everything in the world is becoming connected and interactive due to the Internet. The future of interactive smart environments such as smart cities, smart industries, or smart farms demand high network bandwidth, high network flexibility, and self-organization systems without costly hardware upgrades, and they provide a sustainable, scalable, and replicable smart environment backbone infrastructure. This paper presents a new Hybrid Software-Defined architecture for integrating Internet-of-Things technologies that are essential technologies for smart environments. It combines a software-defined networking infrastructure and a real-time distributed network framework with an advanced optimization to enable self-configuration, self-management, and self-adaption for providing seamless communication and efficiently managing a vast number of smart heterogeneous devices.
Critical issues such as connection congestion, long transmission delay, and packet loss become even worse during epidemic, disaster, and so on. In this study, a link load balancing method is proposed to address these issues on the data plane, a plane of the software-defined network (SDN) architecture. These problems are NP-complete, so a meta-heuristic approach, discrete particle swarm optimization, is used with a novel hybrid cost function. The superiority of the proposed method over existing methods in the literature is that it provides link and switch load balancing simultaneously. The goal is to choose a path that minimizes the connection load between the source and destination in multipath SDNs. Furthermore, the proposed work is dynamic, so selected paths are regularly updated. Simulation results prove that with the proposed method, streams reach the target with minimum time, no loss, low power consumption, and low memory usage.

Global data center IP traffic is expected to reach 20.6 zettabytes (ZB) by the end of 2021. Intra-data center networks (Intra-DCN) will account for 71.5% of the data center traffic flow and will be the largest portion of the traffic. The understanding of traffic distribution in IntraDCN is still sketchy. It causes significant amount of bandwidth to go unutilized, and creates avoidable choke points. Conventional transport protocols such as Optical Packet Switching (OPS) and Optical Burst Switching (OBS) allow a one-sided view of the traffic flow in the network. This therefore causes disjointed and uncoordinated decision-making at each node. For effective resource planning, there is the need to consider joining the distributed with centralized management which anticipates the system's needs and regulates the entire network. Methods derived from Kalman filters have proved effective in planning road networks. Considering the network available bandwidth as data transport highways, we propose an intelligent enhanced SDN concept applied to OBS architecture. A management plane (MP) is added to conventional control (CP) and data planes (DP). The MP assembles the traffic spatio-temporal parameters from ingress nodes, uses Kalman filtering prediction-based algorithm to estimate traffic demand. Prior to packets arrival at edges nodes, it regularly forwards updates of resources allocation to CPs. Simulations were done on a hybrid scheme (1+1) and on the centralized OBS. The results demonstrated that the proposition decreases the packet loss ratio. It also improves network latency and throughput-up to 84 and 51%, respectively, versus the traditional scheme.
