  • The rapidly growing demand for electric power systems in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) require simpler, cost-effective, and higher performance components. In this paper, a novel power conversion system for hybrid electric vehicles is proposed for these needs. The proposed power conversion system reduces the conversion system cost while preserving same functionality. The proposed power conversion system can boost multi-sources to drive a traction motor and to store energy at the same time reducing number of switching components. In this paper, all operational modes of the proposed converter are explained in detail and verified by a computer simulation first. Then, the topology and operational modes are experimentally verified. Based on the results, the feasibility of the proposed multi-mode single leg power conversion system for EV and HEV applications is discussed.

  • A two-dimensional hybrid flaw solver has been developed for the accurate and efficient simulation of steady and unsteady flaw fields. The flow solver was cast to accommodate two different topologies of computational meshes. Triangular meshes are adopted in the near-body region such that complex geometric configurations can be easily modeled, while adaptive Cartesian meshes are, utilized in the off-body region to resolve the flaw more accurately with less numerical dissipation by adopting a spatially high-order accurate scheme and solution-adaptive mesh refinement technique. A chimera mesh technique has been employed to link the two flow regimes adopting each mesh topology. Validations were made for the unsteady inviscid vol1ex convection am the unsteady turbulent flaws over an NACA0012 airfoil, and the results were compared with experimental and other computational results.

  • In this paper we present a new approach to estimate link travel speed based on the hybrid neuro-fuzzy network. It combines the fuzzy ART algorithm for structure learning and the backpropagation algorithm for parameter adaptation. At first, the fuzzy ART algorithm partitions the input/output space using the training data set in order to construct initial neuro-fuzzy inference network. After the initial network topology is completed, a backpropagation learning scheme is applied to optimize parameters of fuzzy membership functions. An initial neuro-fuzzy network can be applicable to any other link where the probe car data are available. This can be realized by the network adaptation and add/modify module. In the network adaptation module, a CBR(Case-Based Reasoning) approach is used. Various experiments show that proposed methodology has better performance for estimating link travel speed comparing to the existing method.

  • In this paper we propose a Hybrid MAC(HMAC) to enhance the transmission throughput in Wireless Sensor Networks(WSNs). In the proposed HMAC, sender nodes send transmission request packets to the receiver nodes using CSMA/CA MAC protocol. And the receiver node assigns slots according to the network topology and the amount of traffics using TDMA. Using HMAC we get the enhanced throughput by lowering the duplicated slot assignment.

  • This study presents a novel four-channel light-emitting diode (LED) current balancing topology using a current-fed hybrid quasi-Z-source converter. With the proposed structure, currents flowing through four LED strings are automatically balanced owing to the charge (amp-sec) balance condition on capacitors. Thus, automatic current balancing of the proposed driver is simple and precise. In addition, the proposed LED driver uses only one active switch and three diodes. The operating principle and characteristics of the proposed four-channel LED driver are analyzed in detail. To verify the operation of the proposed LED driver, a prototype is built and tested with different numbers of LEDs.

  • Hybrid radio frequency/free space optical (RF/FSO) wireless mesh networks have attracted increasing attention for they can overcome the limitations of RF and FSO communications and significantly increase the throughput of wireless mesh networks (WMNs). In this article, a resource assignment optimization scheme is proposed for hybrid RF/FSO wireless mesh networks. The optimization framework is proposed for the objective of maximizing throughput of overall hybrid networks through joint transmission slot assignment, FSO links allocation and power control with the consideration of the fading nature of RF and FSO links. The scheme is formulated as an instance of mixed integer linear program (MILP) and the optimal solutions are provided using CPLEX and Gurobi optimizers. How to choose the appropriate optimizer is discussed by comparing their performance. Numerous simulations are done to demonstrate that the performance of our optimization scheme is much better than the current case of having the same topology.

  • For higher reliability against component failures in railroad trains with many electronic sensors and actuators, a distributed control system with which all electronic components are connected via a network is being considered. This paper compares and analyzes various topologies of Ethernet network for a railroad train in the aspects of (1) failure recovery, (2) the number of ports per device, (3) the number of cable connections between vehicles, and (4) performance. Especially, the unique characteristic of a train system that the number of vehicles changes is considered through analysis. Various combinations of in- and inter-vehicle topologies are considered. In addition, we introduce a hybrid of star and daisy-chain topology for inter-vehicle connection when the maximum number of inter-vehicle connections is limited to reduce possible failures of inter-vehicle connections. Simulation results show performance comparison between different topology combinations; the hybrid topology is shown to enhance delay performance even with a highly limited number of inter-vehicle connections.

  • In this paper, a Z-source hybrid active power filter is proposed to compensate the harmonics and reactive power in power distribution system. The proposed system is composed of a 7th harmonics-tuned passive filter and an active power filter with a Z-source inverter topology, while voltage source PWM inverter or current source PWM inverter are applied as the power converter topology of conventional active power filters. The Z-source impedance network along with shoot through capability would ensure a constant DC voltage across the DC link. A polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell is employed as an compensation DC energy source of the proposed system and its equivalent R-L-C circuit is modeled for simulation. As the compensation and control algorithm of the proposed system, the current synchronous detection algorithm is applied. The simulation analysis by PSIM is performed under the three-phase 220V/60Hz voltage source and 25A nonlinear diode loads. The effectiveness of the proposed the system is verified in the steady and transient states.

  • This paper proposes a dynamic job distribution algorithm in a hybrid NoC structure which can improve system network performance by reducing deadlock and packet drop rate for various multimedia applications. The proposed job distribution algorithm schedules every job to the sub-cluster where packet drop rate can be minimized for each multimedia application program. The proposed Job distribution algorithm and network topology targets multimedia applications frequently used in modern embedded systems, such as MPEG4 and MP3 decoder, GPS positioning system, and OFDM demodulator. Experimental results show that packet drop rate was reduced by about 13.0%, and chip area was increased by about 2.7% compared to the APSRA algorithm. When compared to the XY algorithm popularly used for benchmarking, the packet drop rate was reduced by about 23.9%, while chip area was increased by about 3.0%.
