  • Introducing renewable energy sources, such as wind and photovoltaic arrays, in microgrids that supply remote regions with electricity represents a significant leap in electricity generation. Combining photovoltaic panels and diesel engines is one of the most common ways to supply electricity to rural communities. Such hybrid systems can reduce the cost of electricity generation in these remote power systems because they use free energy to balance the power generated by diesel engines. However, the combination of renewable energy sources and diesel engines tends to complicate the sizing and control of the entire system due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. This study sought to investigate this issue in depth. It proposes a robust hybrid controller that can be used to facilitate optimum power sharing between a PV power source and diesel generators based on the dynamics of the available PV energy at any given time. The study also describes a hybrid PV-diesel power plant's essential functional parts that produce electricity for a microgrid using a renewable energy source. Power control needs to be adjusted to reduce the cost of power generation.

Computing and Reducing Transient Error Propagation in Registers

  • Recent research indicates that transient errors will increasingly become a critical concern in microprocessor design. As embedded processors are widely used in reliability-critical or noisy environments, it is necessary to develop cost-effective fault-tolerant techniques to protect processors against transient errors. The register file is one of the critical components that can significantly affect microprocessor system reliability, since registers are typically accessed very frequently, and transient errors in registers can be easily propagated to functional units or the memory system, leading to silent data error (SDC) or system crash. This paper focuses on investigating the impact of register file soft errors on system reliability and developing cost-effective techniques to improve the register file immunity to soft errors. This paper proposes the register vulnerability factor (RVF) concept to characterize the probability that register transient errors can escape the register file and thus potentially affect system reliability. We propose an approach to compute the RVF based on register access patterns. In this paper, we also propose two compiler-directed techniques and a hybrid approach to improve register file reliability cost-effectively by lowering the RVF value. Our experiments indicate that on average, RVF can be reduced to 9.1% and 9.5% by the hyperblock-based instruction re-scheduling and the reliability-oriented register assignment respectively, which can potentially lower the reliability cost significantly, without sacrificing the register value integrity.

  • The most concerning issue in these days is the energy crisis by increasing threat of global warming and depletion of natural resources. In the situations, the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) is drawing attention from many countries for the next generation's car which has higher fuel efficiency and lower environmental impact. This paper presents simulation results about the limit capacity of central power-grid which doesn't have enough surplus electric power for charging PHEVs. Therefore, this paper also presents a smart charging system that can charge the PHEVs with a function of distributing demands of charging. The smart charging system is an agent facility between the government and consumer, which can recommend the best time to charge the battery of PHEVs by the lowest energy cost. This function of choosing time-slots is the technical system for the government which wants to control the consumption rate of electric power for PHEVs. Finally, this paper presents the economic feasibility of PHEVs from the two kinds of price system, midnight electric price and home electric price.

  • Supercapacitors as novel energy storage devices between conventional capacitors and batteries, with more specific capacitance and energy densities than conventional capacitors and more power densities than batteries are to be used in many fields. Supercapacitor is regarded as one of good alternatives for meeting the requirement of market with excellent power performance and high cyclability. This paper deals with the characteristics of charge and discharge behavior of supercapacitor module for developing 42V hybrid energy storage system with lead acid battery and supercapacitor in order to adopt to 42V power net for vehicle. An analysis performed in this paper indicates that supercapacitor storage system may be cost effective for high cycle applications.

  • Due to the increase of oil price, the needs of the reduction of the fuel cost is rising. Therefore, necessity of hybrid vehicle that runs with engine and the electric motor is on the rise. In order to improve the performance of hybrid vehicle, many researches is carried out. Hybrid vehicles have been developed with the various layout such as serial type, parallel type, power split type, and multi-mode type. The multi-mode hybrid vehicles are designed to show the efficient driving characteristics at low speed and high speed. But the multi-mode system have the problem such as frequent clutch engagement. Frequent clutch engagement causes the shock of vehicles, and the shock inhibits the ride comfort. In this study, automation mechanism of clutch operation is proposed to mitigate the shock at engaging clutch. For this purpose, the dynamic characteristics of motor control is numerically analyzed by using Matlab/Simulink.

자력을 이용한 하이브리드 고무 마운트 (Hybrid Rubber Mount by Using Magnetic Force)

  • This paper presents a hybrid rubber mount with magnet to isolate effectively the vibration in vehicle, forklift, and so on. The hybrid mount does not have any controller of the magnetic force. Dynamic stiffness of the mount is reduced by only magnetic suction according to the applied magnetic field and damping coefficient increased. Performance of conventional rubber mount with using electromagnet has been investigated by MTS Tester. The governing equation of the hybrid mount was derived and verified by comparison with experimental and theoretical results. The equation can be used practically and usefully in the design of the mount and analysis of the mounting system. The hybrid mount provides excellent performance in vibration isolation and its structure is very simpler than active with controller and a semi-active mount with a functional fluid. Furthermore, production cost of the mount using permanent magnets is very lower than that of the active mount with electromagnets. Therefore, commercial potential of the mount is very high.

Characterization of a Hybrid Cu Paste as an Isotropic Conductive Adhesive

  • As an isotropic conductive adhesive, that is, a hybrid Cu paste composed of Cu powder, solder powder, and a fluxing resin system, has been quantitatively characterized. The mechanism of an electrical connection based on a novel concept of electrical conduction is experimentally characterized using an analysis of a differential scanning calorimeter and scanning electron microscope energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The oxide on the metal surface is sufficiently removed with an increase in temperature, and intermetallic compounds between the Cu and melted solder are simultaneously generated, leading to an electrical connection. The reliability of the hybrid Cu paste is experimentally identified and compared with existing Ag paste. As an example of a practical application, the hybrid Cu paste is used for LED packaging, and its electrical and thermal performances are compared with the commercialized Ag paste. In the present research, it is proved that, except the optical function, the electrical and thermal performances are similar to pre-existing Ag paste. The hybrid Cu paste could be used as an isotropic conductive adhesive due to its low production cost.

Development of New Methods for Position Estimation of Underground Acoustic Source Using a Passive SONAR System

  • The aim of the work described in this paper is to develop a complex underground acoustic system which detects and localizes the origin of an underground hammering sound using an array of hydrophones located about 100m underground. Three different methods for the sound localization will be presented, a time-delay method, a power-attenuation method and a hybrid method. In the time-delay method, the cross correlation of the signals received from the array of sensors is used to calculate the time delays between those signals. In the power-attenuation method, the powers of the received signals provide a measure of the distances of the source from the sensors. In the hybrid method, both informations of time-delays and power-ratios are coupled together to produce better performance of position estimation. A new acoustic imaging technique has been developed for improving the hybrid method. This new acoustic imaging method shows the multi-dimensional distribution of the normalized cost function, so as to indicate the trend of the minimizing direction toward the source location. For each method the sound localization is carried out in three dimensions underground. The distance between the true and estimated origins of the source is 28m for a search area of radius 250m.

열원의 온도변화에 따른 겨울철 태양열-지열 하이브리드 R22 열펌프의 성능에 관한 해석적 연구 (Theoretical Study on the Performance in a Solar-Geothermal Hybrid R22 Heat Pump During Winter Season according to Heat Source Temperature)

  • The Solar and geothermal energy have many advantage like low cost, non-toxic, and unlimited. But those the have very low energy efficiency. In this study, the theoretical study of performance in a sola-geothermal hybrid heat pump with operating conditions has carried out. As a result, as the solar radiation increases from 1 $MJ/m^2$ to 20 $MJ/m^2$, the heat pump operating time decreases by 19.5% from 18 times to 14.5 times and the heat pump heat decreases by 23%. Besides, the heating COP increases by 21.4% when the evaporator inlet temperature increases from $11^{\circ}C$ to $19^{\circ}C$. By adapting the geothermal system into a solar hybrid R22 heat pump, the system performance and reliability increases significantly for variable operating conditions during winter season.

  • 최근 고성능의 SSD(Solid State Drive)가 등장하면서 단일노드의 입출력 성능이 대폭 상향되었다. 이에 SSD를 기반으로 하는 차세대 저장장치 플랫폼이 주목을 받게 되었고, 고속 연산이 필요한 서버 또는 데이터 센터 등에서 SSD 기반 저장장치를 구축하는 시도가 증가하고 있다. 그러나 SSD는 단위용량당 비용이 고가이기 때문에, SSD 기반 저장장치를 구성하기에는 아직 어려움이 있다. 따라서, 본 논문은 저가와 큰 용량이 장점인 HDD(Hard Disk Drive)와 SSD가 통합된 저장장치에서 파일을 관리하는 소프트웨어 HyPLVM(Hybrid Priority Logical Volume Manager)을 소개한다. HyPLVM은 사용자가 접근하는 파일, 디렉터리를 분석하여 파일에 우선순위를 부여하고, 이 우선순위 값에 따라 높으면 SSD에, 낮으면 HDD에 저장되도록 관리한다. 이로써, 접근빈도가 많은 파일에 한에서 SSD로 구성된 저장장치와 버금가는 입출력 성능을 산출하면서 저장장치 구축비용을 절감한다.
