An ATM switch must deal with various kinds of input sources having different traffic characteristics and it must guarantee very small value of cel loss probability, about 10$^{8}$ -10$^{12}$ , to deal with loss-sensitive traffics. In order to estimate such a rate event probability with simulation procedure, a variance reduction technique is essential for obtaining an appropriate level of precision with reduced cost. In this paper, we propose a hybrid simulation technique to achieve reduction of variance of cell loss probability estimator, where hybrid means the combination of analytical method and simulation procedure. A discrete time queueing model with multiple input sources and a finite shared buffer is considered, where the arrival process at an input source and a finite shared buffer is considered, where the arrival process at an input source is governed by an Interrupted Bernoulli Process and the service rate is constant. We deal with heterogeneous input sources as well as homogeneous case. The performance of the proposed hybrid simulation estimator is compared with those of the raw simulation estimator and the importance sampling estimator in terms of variance reduction ratios.
The main objective of this paper is to develop computer simulation program for performance evaluation and cost estimation of a reverse osmosis (RO) and pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO) hybrid process to propose guidelines for its economic competitiveness use in the field. A solution-diffusion model modified with film theory and a simple cost model was applied to the simulation program. Using the simulation program, the effects of various factors, including the Operating conditions, membrane properties, and cost parameters on the RO and RO-PRO hybrid process performance and cost were examined. The simulation results showed that the RO-PRO hybrid process can be economically competitive with the RO process when electricity cost is more than 0.2 $/kWh, the PRO membrane cost is same as RO membrane cost, the power density is more than $8W/m^2$ and PRO recovery is same as 1/(1-RO recovery).
A numerical simulation of an incompressible cavity flow is conducted using the hybrid turbulence model. The model adopted is a modified type of DES using k- ε two-equation model. Cavity geometry and flow condition are based on Cattafesta's experiment. Computational results are compared with the results of Cattafesta's experiment. The simulation successfully predicts the oscillatory features and the Strouhal number of the oscillation compares very favorably with that of the dominant mode of experimental data. Vorticity contours obtained from the simulation data are consistent with the smoke visualization of the Cattafesta's experiment. The coherent structures of cavity flow are also investigated using Q criterion.
Recently, there has been considerable research in the field of application of Laser-Arc hybrid welding for superstructures, such as ship-structures, transport vehicles etc. However, the study on heat distribution and welding residual stress of hybrid weld by numerical simulation leaves much to be desired. Therefore, in this study, an optimized welding condition and numerical simulation for hybrid welding, using previous numerical analysis to calculate the heat source for hybrid welding, has been analyzed. For this purpose, fundamental welding phenomena of the hybrid process, using Laser and, is investigated. In order to calculate temperature and residual stress distribution in hybrid welds, a finite element heat source model is developed on the basis of experimental results and characteristics of temperature. Residual stress distribution in hybrid welds are understood from the result of simulation, and compared with the experimental values.
This paper presented an application of the geotechnical hybrid-online simulation to the consolidation settlement problem of soft clay. Conventional numerical analyses have used idealized soil constitutive models obtained from the laboratory soil tests. On the other hand, in the hybrid-online simulation, soil response was directly introduced to numerical analyses from the soil element test, and, therefore, the complicated parameter estimation was not required in this method. Fundamentals of the hybrid-online simulation method and the development of the algorithm and corresponding hardware and software for the system were presented in this study. Furthermore, an incremental loading consolidation and the hydraulic conductivity test and a comparative study using the Terzagh's conventional consolidation theory were carried out for the system verification including the performance of the experimental device and source coding of software components, and the data reliability obtained from the system. In conclusion, we found that the hybrid-online consolidation simulation system could reproduce the consolidation behavior of the remolded Kaolinite specimen withoutany discrepancies.
Purpose: This study investigated the effectiveness of simulation training with a hybrid model of student nurses' performance ability and reported self confidence. Methods: A nonequivalent control group with pre-posttest was designed. Data collection was done during the first semester in 2012 at a college of nursing in Seoul. Nursing performance ability and reported self confidence related to taking care of patients with urinary problems were evaluated. The treatment group (n=96) received simulation training of a catheterization procedure with a hybrid model involving standardized patients and a mannequin. Nursing students in the comparison group (n=84) did not receive the simulation training but would receive it prior to their next clinical practicum's. Results: The treatment group showed a significantly higher performance ability and reported self confidence than that of the comparison group. The perceived helpfulness and contentment of the simulation training in experimental group was high. Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrated that simulation with a hybrid model was effective in teaching skills prior to the clinical experience which suggests that skill development is not dependent on the actual clinical situation. Nurse educators should consider simulation training as a tool beyond that of clinical practicum.

Recently, Hybrid Navigation Systems combining Omega, NNSS, Loran C and Dead reckoning etc. served to give us highly accurate ship's position, and a number of ships are equipped with these navigation systems. In order to evaluate for the accuracy of this navigation system observations of Loran C, 5970 and 9970 chains and Radar at the same time were made on board m.s Jeonbuk 401 and 403 training ships of Gunsan Fisheries Collage at nine stations in the yellow sea from July, 1982 to June, 1983, and then were done by the Hybrid Navigation System combining Dead reckoning and Loran C at the same areas. The authors investigated the accuracy of the Hybrid Navigation System based on measurements of the relative positional error which is defined as the difference between the position fixed by this system or the Loran C system, and the one by the Radar. The obtained results are as follows; 1. The mean standard deviation of the time difference of Loran C were about 0.21$\mu$s in 9970 chain and about 0.06$\mu$s in 5970 chain, and the fluctuation of the time difference of Loran C in 5970 chain was smaller than that in 9970 chain. 2. The positional error between two positions by Radar and the Hybrid Navigation System in 9970 chain was about 0.4 miles, and between two positions by Radar and Loran C was about 0.51 miles. The Hybrid Navigation System was therefore more accurate than Loran C System. 3. The positional error between two positions by Radar and Hybrid Navigation System in 5970 chain was about 0.4 miles, and between two positions by Radar and computer simulation of Loran C was about 0.98 miles. Consequently, Hybrid Navigation System was more accurate than computer simulation of Loran C system.
A framework for multi-platform analytical and multi-component hybrid (testing-analysis) simulations is described in this paper and illustrated with several application examples. The framework allows the integration of various analytical platforms and geographically distributed experimental facilities into a comprehensive pseudo-dynamic hybrid simulation. The object-oriented architecture of the framework enables easy inclusion of new analysis platforms or experimental models, and the addition of a multitude of auxiliary components, such as data acquisition and camera control. Four application examples are given, namely; (i) multi-platform analysis of a bridge with soil and structural models, (ii) multiplatform, multi-resolution analysis of a high-rise building, (iii) three-site small scale frame hybrid simulation, and (iv) three-site large scale bridge hybrid simulation. These simulations serve as illustrative examples of collaborative research among geographically distributed researchers employing different analysis platforms and testing equipment. The versatility of the framework, ease of including additional modules and the wide application potential demonstrated in the paper provide a rich research environment for structural and geotechnical engineering.
A knowledge based hybrid simulation environment has been established which supports the simulation procedure from the modeling step to the experimentation step by providing various tools, query, and advisory. The knowledge base in the established environment uses the If-Then Rule to transfer the fact input from the user to the act for the execution of the simulation process. Simulation non-experts are the user target and non-specific area is the application target.
The objective of this paper is the development of the forward-looking dynamic simulation model of a hybrid electric vehicle(HEV) for a fuel economy study. The specification of the vehicle is determined based on two factors, engine peak power to curb weight ratio and specific engine power. The steady state efficiency models of the powertrain components are explained in detail. These include a spark ignition direct injection(SIDI) engine, an integrated starter alternator(ISA), and an infinitely variable transmission(IVT). The paper describes the integration of these models into a forward facing dynamic simulation diagram using the AMESim environment. Appropriate vehicle and driver models have been added and described. The controller was designed in Simulink and was combined with the physical powertrain model by the co-simulation interface. Finally, the simulation results of the HEV are compared with those of a baseline vehicle in order to demonstrate the fuel economy potential. Results for the vehicle speed error and the fuel economy over standard driving cycles are illustrated.
