The effect of directions (north to south vs east to west) of planting row, planting intensities (10/15, 15/15, 20/15, 25/15 cm/cm) and the number of rows consecutively (1,2, 3,4) for both the CMS and pollen parent in alternation, on the seed yield of CMS of rice was tested with a breeding line V20A/Iri342$\^$*8/. When the planting row was made in vertical direction to the wind direction during anthesis, the seed yield was higher than the other direction regardless the planting densities and number of rows consecutive. Seed yield increased as high as 46.9%. The higher planting intensities up to 10/15 cm/cm yielded the higher hybrid seeds. The highest yield was 81.2 kg/ha. The yield variation among plants within a plot and among the plants within a replication was relatively large. Increased pollen parent row numbers caused increased grain fertility per plant, but the seed yield was increased by reduced pollen parent row number. Reduced CMS parental row numbers caused increased grain fertility per plant, but the seed yield was increased by increased CMS parental row numbers. Considering the hybrid seed yield, parental seed yield and operational convenience, 4 rows of CMS and 1 row of pollen parent in alternate with 20/15 or 25/15 (cm/cm) planting densities seemed to be the rational layout.
In industries, shipping is an important issue in improving the forecasting accuracy of sales. This paper introduces a hybrid method and plural methods are compared. Focusing the equation of exponential smoothing method (ESM) that is equivalent to (1, 1) order autoregressive-moving-average (ARMA) model equation, a new method of estimating the smoothing constant in ESM had been proposed previously by us which satisfies minimum variance of forecasting error. Generally, the smoothing constant is selected arbitrarily. However, this paper utilizes the above stated theoretical solution. Firstly, we make estimation of ARMA model parameter and then estimate the smoothing constant. Thus, theoretical solution is derived in a simple way and it may be utilized in various fields. Furthermore, combining the trend removing method with this method, we aim to improve forecasting accuracy. This method is executed in the following method. Trend removing by the combination of linear and 2nd order nonlinear function and 3rd order nonlinear function is executed to the original production data of two kinds of bread. Genetic algorithm is utilized to search the optimal weight for the weighting parameters of linear and nonlinear function. For comparison, the monthly trend is removed after that. Theoretical solution of smoothing constant of ESM is calculated for both of the monthly trend removing data and the non-monthly trend removing data. Then forecasting is executed on these data. The new method shows that it is useful for the time series that has various trend characteristics and has rather strong seasonal trend. The effectiveness of this method should be examined in various cases.
Three F$_1$ hybrids, Seokwang/Milyang 54, HR1619-6-2-1-2-2/Milyang 54 and 55061/IR19735-5-2-3-2-1, and their parents were inoculated with each of four individual blast races, IC-l3, IH-l, IA-61 and IB-47, and the mixtures of two races, IC-13 and IH-l, IC-13 and IA-61, and IC-13 and IB-47, respectively. The varietal reactions to the tested races showed that two parental varieties of each cross, Seokwang and Milyang 54, HR1619-6-2-1-2-2 and Milyang 54, and 55061 and IR19735-5-2-3-2-1 have different resistance gene(s) respectively. The F 1 hybrids between two cultivars having different resistant genes were resistant to the mixture of two races of which one race was virulent to one parent and avirulent to the other parent respectively, while the parents of these F$_1$s were susceptible. This may suggest that the F$_1$ hybrids have wider spectrum resistance to leaf blast than their parents.

In abalones, interspecific hybridization has been suggested as a possible means to increase production and desired traits for the industry. In Korea, Haliotis gigantea is considered a species with a larger size and higher temperature tolerance than H. discus hannai. However, H. discus hannai is considered the most valuable and popular fishery resource due to its better acceptance and higher market prices. Thus, viable interspecific hybrids have been produced by artificial inseminating H. gigantea eggs with H. discus hannai sperm. However, the reciprocal hybrid cross was not successful. In this study, the hybridity and the growth and thermal tolerance performance of the interspecific hybrids were examined. A combination of various assays revealed maximum growth occurrence at 21℃ and the higher growth rate in the hybrids than that of H. discus hannai parent. In addition, the growth and survival at high-temperature (28℃) of the hybrids was equivalent to that of the highly tolerant H. gigantea parent, suggesting new possibilities to overcome the mass mortality in H. discus hannai during high temperature periods of summer season in Korea. Furthermore, the induced interspecific hybrid status was confirmed by the presence of species-specific bands for each parental species of the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) profiles using universal rice primer (URP), which could be used as speciesspecific markers to distinguish the hybrids and their parental species.
The effects of various factors affacting yield and its components in rice were estimated by analzing the yield forcasting trial data from 1966 to 1979. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The year effects was increased by 3.46kg per year, and one day early planting increased by 2,26kg. 2. The effect of japonica vareties was negative while that of indica-japonica hybrid varieties was positive and the effect of each varities was increased by 3.46kg per year. 3. The contribution of each effect of the planting date, nitrogen varity, pest control and other improvement of cultivation to yield was estimated as 1.76kg (14.5%), I.04kg (8.7%), 5.84kg(48.2%), 3.47kg(28.6%) per year, respectively.
To find out the optimum planting date of silage corn in the rice black-streaked dwarf virus (RBSDV) pre-valent area, a resistant hybrid of Jinjuok and a susceptible hybrid of Suweon 19 were planted at the 8 planting dates from April 1 to June 10 at the la-day intervals. Considering escape of RBSDV and silage yield, the optimum planting date seems to be during the April in both hybrids. At the April plantings silage yield of two hybrids ranged from 17 to 23 tons/ha on the dry matter base due to a lower infection rate and higher tolerance to RBSDV and there was no difference in silage yield between two hybrids. At the May plantings yield of ear, stover, and silage, culm length, and digestible dry matter decreased significantly as planting date delayed due to an increase in RBSDV infection rate in both hybrids although performance of a resistant hybrid of Jinjuok was better than a susceptible hybrid of Suweon 19. At the June 10 planting RBSDV infection rate was low and performance of corn was better than that at the May plantings but poorer than that at the April plantings. The peak of small brown planthopper population occurred in late March or early April, middle June, middle July, and early September although it fluctuated a little yearly. Very low small brown planthopper population during the May may attribute to a lower RBSDV infection and high silage yields at the April plantings because the plants grow enough to be tolerant when infected by RBSDV in middle June. However, at the May plantings plants are too young to be tolerant when infected by RBSDV in middle June.
Experiments on the physiological root activity and its related characteristics of rice varieties were carried out in order to obtain some basic informations for the application of the results obtained to a rice breeding program. A significant positive correlation was found not only among the various characteristics related to conducting and ventilating systems which connects top and root of rice plant, but also between these characteristics and root activity. On the other hand, a significant difference in physiological root activity was recognized among different varieties and also between different groups of recognized 7 rice varieties differing in the their origin. It was also found that varieties with higher root activity (root activity indices) after ear formation stage tended to have more number of lower green leaves and consequently resulted in higher grain yield. Therefore, it may be possible to diagnose indirectly the root activity by examining the number of green leaves of the rice plant at later growth stage when breeders make selections of parent material for crossing or of hybrid lines in pedigree nurseries.
The morphogenesis of panicle and spikelet in paddy rice has been studied in high yielding Indica$\times$Japonica hybrid cultivar, Milyang 23 and a Japonica type cultivar, Koshihikari. Germinated seeds planted in $5000^{-1}$ a pots filled with submerged soil and cultured under natural conditions. The young panicle of main stem were continuously dissected and observered by Cryo-SEM from the panicle initiation stage until heading stage. Although the date of panicle differentiation and heading in Koshihikari earlier than those of Milyang 23. the sequence of panicle development in two cultivars begins when first bract primordium at opposite side of flag-leaf primordium differentiated, synchronously followed by growth of the primary branch primordia (PBPs) and secondary branch primordia (SBPs), spikelet primordia(SPs), glumes as lateral organs on rachilla and organs composing single floret, and successive sporogenesis in the young spikelets continue after the enclosure by lemma and palea. The PBPs are acropetally initiated from the base of the panicle primordium, and the SBPs alternately differentiate from the base of upper PBP which differentiate later than the lower PBP. Spikelet development starts at the top of upper side PBP of the young panicle and continue basipetally even though SBPs continue to develop at the lower primary branch. Each PBP, SBP and SP differentiate with differentiation bract or bract hair cell around the base of each their primordia. The observation could confirm that Milyang 23 has not only 2~3 more defferentiated PBPs, but also more SBPs and SPs especially from middle-lower primary branch, at end of their differentiation stages, as compared to those of Koshihikari.
7 parent varieties and 21 $_{x}\textrm{F}_1 and $_{x}\textrm{F}_2 hybrids from 7 X 7 partial diallel crosses were used as the materials, and degree of heterosis was studied in 9 agronomic characters of rice. Degree of heterosis was more remarkable in $_{x}\textrm{F}_1 hybrids than $_{x}\textrm{F}_2 hybrids. and significant differences were showed in many hybrid generations. and also over dominance could be shoo wed in eight characters except 1000 kernel weight of rice.
Differentiation and degeneration of spikelets in paddy rice has been studied in high yielding Indica$\times$Japonica hybrid cultivar, Milyang 23 and a Japonica type cultivar, Koshihikari. Germinated seeds planted in 5000$^{-1}$ a pots filled with submerged soil and cultured under natural conditions. The young panicles of main stem were continuously dissected and observered by Cryo-SEM from the panicle initiation stage, and investigated about formation position of the differentiation and degeneration spikelet within a panicle of 7 days after heading. The degeneration of spikelet appeared simultaneously throughout panicle just after closure of spikelet by the palea and lemma. Differentiated and degenerated spikelets per panicle were about 240, 80 for Milyang 23 and 87, 6 for Koshihikari, respectively. The spikelets degeneration in Milyang 23 was mainly on the secondary and tertiary branch which were developed from primary branch of middle-basal panicle node and hardly not the spikelets of primary branch, and degeneration rate of secondary and tertiary rachis branch and spikelets for Milyang 23 were 2.5 times greater than those of Koshihikari. The proper relation equation between total differentiation or normal spikelets number per panicle(Y) and each rachis branch number were different between cultivars, Le., Y=5.5X$_1$+3.0X$_2$ for Koshihikari as previously proposed, but those of Milyang 23, Y=5.7X$_1$+3.5X$_2$+2.8X$_3$ for total differentiation spikelets and Y=5.6X$_1$+3.2X$_2$+2.4X$_3$ for normally developed spikelets, where X$_1$, X$_2$, X$_3$ are number of primary, secondary, tertiary rachis branch, respectively.
