The hybrid composite materials with non-woven tissue (NWT) was developed to improve the mechanical properties of conventional FRP composite materials. The hybrid prepreg with NWT consists of FRP prepreg and NWT prepreg. The NWT prepreg consists of NWT and polymer resin. The NWT has short fibers, discretely distributed with in-plane random orientation fibers. The purposes of this study of hybrid prepreg with NWT are (i) to increase the interlaminar properties(the fracture toughness and strength), (ii) to improve the mechanical properties and reliability, while maintaining a low cost, (iii) to introduce a tough and strong interlayer at critical positions to be required of strength in the laminate. To accomplish the above purposes, a production technique to decrease voids in NWT layers was proposed in this paper. The interlaminar failure characteristics of laminated composite materials was tremendously improved by hybrid concept with NWT.
In this study, poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP)-based gel polymer electrolyte incorporating nano-size $Al_2O_3$ ceramic particle was prepared by electrospinning. The gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) incorporated with $Al_2O_3$ ceramic particle showed higher ionic conductivity of $9.5{\times}10^{-2}Scm^{-1}$ than pure PVdF-HFP GPE without ceramic particle and improved the electrochemical stability up to 5.2 V. The GPEs were assembled with $LiNi_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}Co_{1/3}O_2$ (NMC) cathode for electrochemical test. The GPE batteries at 0.1 C-rate delivered $168.2mAh\;g^{-1}$ for pure GPE and $189.6mAh\;g^{-1}$ for hybrid GPE, respectively. Therefore, the incorporation of high dielectric constant ceramic particle will be good strategy to enhance the stability and electrochemical properties of lithium ion gel polymer batteries.
Because demineralized bone particle (DBP) contains various bioactive molecules such as cytokines, it is widely used biomaterials in the field of tissue engineering. In this study, we investigated the effect of 2-dimensional DBP/PLGA hybrid films on adhesion, proliferation and phenotype maintenance of intervertebral disc cells. PLGA films incorporated with different amount (0, 10, 20, 40 and 80 wt%) of DBP were prepared by the solvent evaporation method and characterized by scanning election microscopy (SEM). PLGA film has a flat and smooth surface. According to the increase of content of DBP, the surface of DBP/PLGA film exhibited few agglomerates and increased the roughness of the surface. Annulus fibrosus (AF) and nucleus pulposus (NP) cells were cultured on PLGA and DBP/PLGA film surface, and then examined the cell adhesion and proliferation by the cell count and SEM observation. The result of cell count and SEM observation revealed that 10 and 20% DBP in DBP/PLGA films were superior to adhesion and proliferation of both AF and NP cells. We confirmed that specific gene expression of disc cells on DBP/PLGA film based on the cell count result. Disc cells seeded on 20% DBP/PLGA film expressed the gene of type I and II collagen continuously. Therefore, pertinent content of biomaterials could provide more appropriate condition on adhesion and proliferation of cell. And this results may be used as a basic data for the intervertebral disc regeneration using tissue engineering.
Using combinations of carbon and glass fiber composites normally used for strengthening of concrete structures, the hybrid effect from strengthening concrete structures using the composite is studied. To produce the hybrid effects, the specimens were made with optimum proportions of carbon fibers with glass fibers. Then, direct tensile tests were conducted on the hybrid FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) specimens. Unlike the woven fiber sheet currently used in construction sites, the FRP specimens have to be directly combined with the fibers, which make the work very complicated. Therefore, direct tensile test specimens manufacturing method based on the combination of high-tension carbon fibers and E-type glass fibers was proposed and the effects of hybridization is studied through the direct tensile test. By comparing the ductility index, the modulus of elasticity, and the stress-strain curves of the specimens, the most optimum glass to carbon fiber combination ratio for the hybrid FRP was found to be 9 to 1 with ductile K-type epoxy. The study results are discussed in detail in the paper.

Ultrathin oxide encapsulated metal-oxide hybrid nanocatalysts have been fabricated by a soft chemical and facile route. First, SiO2 nanoparticles of 25~30 nm size have been synthesized by modified Stobber's method followed by amine functionalization. Metal nanoparticles (Ru, Rh, Pt) capped with polymer/citrate have been deposited on functionalized SiO2 and finally an ultrathin layer of TiO2 coated on surface which prevents sintering and provides high thermal stability while maximizing the metal-oxide interface for higher catalytic activity. TEM studies confirmed that 2.5 nm sized metal nanoparticles are well dispersed and distributed throughout the surface of 25 nm SiO2 nanoparticles with a 3-4 nm TiO2 ultrathin layer. The metal nanoparticles are still well exposed to outer surface, being enabled for surface characterization and catalytic activity. Even after calcination at $600^{\circ}C$, the structure and morphology of hybrid nanocatalysts remain intact confirm the high thermal stability. XPS spectra of hybrid nanocatalyst suggest the metallic states as well as their corresponding oxide states. The catalytic activity has been evaluated for high temperature CO oxidation reaction as well as photocatalytic H2 generation under solar simulation. The design of hybrid structure, high thermal stability, and better exposure of metal active sites are the key parameters for the high catalytic activity. The maximization of metal-TiO2 interface interaction has the great role in photocatalytic H2 production.

A hybrid grating sensing device based on a side-polished fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a polymer overlay is proposed for simultaneous measurement of external refractive index and temperature. The side-polished FBG, which is insensitive to ambient index change, is utilized for detecting temperature variation, and the polymer overlay is coated on the side-polished FBG for measurement of ambient index change. The temperature sensitivities of the side-polished FBG and the polymer overlay were measured to be 0.01 nm/$^{\circ}C$ and -0.58 nm/$^{\circ}C$, respectively, in a temperature range from $30^{\circ}C$ to $100^{\circ}C$. The ambient index sensitivities of the polymer overlay were measured to be 498.8 nm/RIU in an ambient index range from 1.33 to 1.39, 694.9 nm/RIU from 1.39 to 1.42, and 1312 nm/RIU from 1.42 to 1.44.

Reactive melt processing has been carried out to investigate crosslinking characteristics of high density polyethylene OTDPE) with dicummyl peroxide (DCP) and perbutyle peroxide (PBP). The increase of torque in the internal mixer indicated that the crosslinking in HDPE has been occurred by peroxides. As a result, the substantial decrease of density, melting temperature, and melt enthalpy were found while the melt viscosity increased in partially crosslinked HDPE. In the mechanical properties of partially crosslinked HDPE, the increase of maximum strength and the decrease in elongation at break were clearly noticed and these were more pronounced when PBP was applied as a crosslinking agent. It seems that the maximum strength was obtained with reactive processing temperature at $150^{circ}C$, however, the mixing time did not affect to the strength of partially crosslinked HDPE.
This study describes the basic concept and the applicability of Hybrid Reinforcement System using conventional steel reinforcing bars and Fiber Reinforced Polymer bars. The concrete bridge decks are assumed to be supported by beams and reinforced with two layers of reinforcing bars. In concrete bridge deck using HRS, the top tensile force for negative moment zone on beam supports is assumed to be resisted by FRP reinforcing bars, and the bottom tensile force for positive moment zone in the middle of hem supports is assumed to be resisted by conventional steel reinforcing bars, respectively. The FRP reinforcing bars are non-corrosive. Thus, the steel reinforcement is as far away as possible from the top surface of the deck and protected from intrusion of corrosive agent. HRS concrete bridge deck has sufficient ductility at ultimate state as the following reasons; 1) FRP bars have lower elastic modulus and higher ultimate strain than steel re-bars have, 2) FRP bars have lower ultimate strain if provided higher reinforcement ratio, 3) ultimate strain of FRP bars can be reduced if FRP bars are unbonded. Test results showed that FRP and HRS concrete slabs are not failed by FRP bar rupture, but failed by concrete compression in the range of ordinary reinforcement ratio. Therefore, in continuous concrete bridge deck using HRS, steel reinforcing bars for positive moment yield and form plastic hinge first and compressive concrete fail in the bottom of supports or in the top of the middle of supports last. Thus, bridge deck consumes significant inelastic strain energy before its failure.
In this study, Sulfonated PONF-g-styrene ion exchange fibers were synthesized by radiation induced graft copolymerization. And also, hybride ion exchange fibers, which was combined sulfonated PONF-g-styrene fibers and cationic ion exchange resin, were fabricated by hot melt adhesion method and then their adsorption properties were investigated. ion exchange capacity and water content of hybrid ion exchange fibers increased as compared with those of bead and ion exchange fiber. Their maximum values were 4.76 meq/g and 23.5%, respectively. Adsorption breakthrough time for mercury of hybrid ion exchange fiber was slower than those of bead resin and fibrous ion exchanger. It's value was 130 minutes. Their breakthrough time become short as increasing of pH, and concentration. The initial breakthrough time was observed before and after 10 minutes as increasing of concentration. The adsorption of hybrid ion exchange fibers for $Hg^{2+}\;Pb^{2+},\;Cd^{2+}$ among heavy metals in the mixed solution was observed before 20 min. And also, The adsorption for $Hg^{2+}$ among the heavy metals by hybride ion exchange fibers was observed.
4-Amino-N-hexadecylbenzamide-graphene sheets (AHB-GSs), used in the preparation of the polyimide (PI) nanocomposite films, were synthesized by mixing a dispersion of graphite oxide with a solution of the ammonium salt of AHB. The atomic force microscope image of functionalized-GS on mica and a profile plot revealed the average thickness of AHB-GS to be ~3.21 nm. PI films were synthesized by reacting 4,4'-biphthalic anhydride and bis(4-aminophenyl) sulfide. PI nanocomposite films containing various contents of AHB-GS over the range of 0-10 wt% were synthesized using the solution intercalation method. The PI nanocomposite films under different thermal imidization temperatures, 250 and $350^{\circ}C$, were examined. The graphenes, for the most part, were well dispersed in the polymer matrix despite some agglomeration. However, micrometer-scale particles were not detected. The average thickness of the particles was <10 nm, as revealed from the transmission electron microscope images. Only a small amount of AHB-GS was required to improve the gas barrier, and electrical conductivity. In contrast, the glass transition and initial decomposition temperatures of the PI hybrid films continued to decrease with increasing content of AHB-GS up to 10 wt%. In general, the properties of the PI hybrid films heat treated at $350^{\circ}C$ were better than those of films heat treated at $250^{\circ}C$.
