  • A new hybrid meta-heuristic optimization algorithm is presented for design of structures. The algorithm is based on the concepts of the charged system search (CSS) and the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms. The CSS is inspired by the Coulomb and Gauss's laws of electrostatics in physics, the governing laws of motion from the Newtonian mechanics, and the PSO is based on the swarm intelligence and utilizes the information of the best fitness historically achieved by the particles (local best) and by the best among all the particles (global best). In the new hybrid algorithm, each agent is affected by local and global best positions stored in the charged memory considering the governing laws of electrical physics. Three different types of structures are optimized as the numerical examples with the new algorithm. Comparison of the results of the hybrid algorithm with those of other meta-heuristic algorithms proves the robustness of the new algorithm.

  • In this paper, we propose an LDPC-coded hybrid ARQ system using incremental redundancy and retransmission of a part of the transmitted packets. We also present a simple criterion for choosing two methods to support a desired throughput efficiently. Furthermore, we show that the throughput performance can be improved when multi-edge type LDPC codes with the structure of Raptor codes are employed for a hybrid ARQ scheme.

  • This paper presents a hybrid sensorless control for an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) for zero-, low-, and high-speed regions. Many sensorless control methods such as an observer-based estimator have been introduced. However, most of the observer-based estimators have a disadvantage at start-up and in the low-speed region. To solve this problem, a simple strategy of using a hybrid system is proposed by integrating a high-frequency (HF) signal injection method and a full-order flux observer. In addition, an HF signal injection method with only a low pass filter (LPF) is proposed to simplify the hybrid system. The hybrid system achieves high-performance drive throughout the entire speed range. The effectiveness of the proposed hybrid technique is verified by experiments using an 11-kW IPMSM drive system.

  • The multiply Type-II hybrid censoring scheme is disadvantaged by an experiment time that is too long. To overcome this limitation, we propose a generalized multiply Type-II hybrid censoring scheme. Some estimators of the scale parameter of the exponential distribution are derived under a generalized multiply Type-II hybrid censoring scheme. First, the maximum likelihood estimator of the scale parameter of the exponential distribution is obtained under the proposed censoring scheme. Second, we obtain the Bayes estimators under different loss functions with a noninformative prior and an informative prior. We approximate the Bayes estimators by Lindleys approximation and the Tierney-Kadane method since the posterior distributions obtained by the two priors are complicated. In addition, the Bayes estimators are obtained by using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo samples. Finally, all proposed estimators are compared in the sense of the mean squared error through the Monte Carlo simulation and applied to real data.

  • The main purpose of this paper is using the analytic methods and the properties of Gauss sums to study the computational problem of one kind mean value of the generalized Kloosterman sums and Dirichlet character of polynomials, and give an interesting asymptotic formula for it.

  • For the fault diagnosis of a mechanical system, pattern recognition methods have being used frequently in recent research. Hidden Markov model(HMM) and artificial neural network(ANN) are typical examples of pattern recognition methods employed for the fault diagnosis of a mechanical system. In this paper, a hybrid method that combines HMM and ANN for the fault diagnosis of a mechanical system is introduced. A rotating blade which is used for a wind turbine is employed for the fault diagnosis. Using the HMM/ANN hybrid model along with the numerical model of the rotating blade, the location and depth of a crack as well as its presence are identified. Also the effect of signal to noise ratio, crack location and crack size on the success rate of the identification is investigated.

  • Inductive learning and classification techniques have been employed in various research and applications that organize textual data to solve the problem of information access. In this study, we develop hybrid model combination methods which incorporate the concepts and techniques for multiple modeling algorithms to improve the accuracy of text classification, and conduct experiments to evaluate the performances of proposed schemes. Boosted stacking, one of the extended stacking schemes proposed in this study yields higher accuracy relative to the conventional model combination methods and single classifiers.

  • Selecting promising technology is becoming more and more difficult due to the increased number and complexity. In this study, we propose hybrid AHP/DEA-AR method and hybrid AHP/DEA-AR-G method to evaluate efficiency of technology alternatives based on ordinal rating data collected through survey to technology experts in a certain field and select efficient technology alternative as promising technology. The proposed method normalizes rating data and uses AHP to derive weights to improve the credibility of analysis, then in order to avoid basic DEA models' problems, use DEA-AR and DEA-AR-G to evaluate efficiency of technology alternatives. In this study, we applied the proposed methods to clean technology and compared with the basic DEA models. According to the result of the comparison, we can find that the both proposed methods are excellent in confirming most efficient technology, and hybrid AHP/DEA-AR method is much easier to use in the process of technology selection.

  • It is one of important issues to find intersection curve? in representation of complex surfaces on a computer. Three typical methods, i.e. the tracing method, the subdivision method, and hybrid method, are often applied to find intersection curves between sculptured surfaces. In this paper two topics are dealt with for efficiency and robustness of the hybrid method. One tropic is about how to determine step sizes variably during tracing, the ethel is about how to find tangential points between surfaces. Tracing by variable step size finds intersections rapidly and requires less memory size. Some illustrations show tangential points between surfaces.
