  • In this paper, prediction of centrifugal fan was conducted through combination the hybrid CAA method which was used to predict the fan noise with the FRPM technique which was used to generate the broadband noise source. Firstly, flow field surround the centrifugal fan was computed using the RANS equations and noise source region was deducted from the computed flow field. Then the FRPM technique was applied to the source region for generation of turbulence which satisfies the stochastic features. The noise source of the centrifugal fan was modeled by applying the acoustic analogy to the synthesized flow field from the computed and generated flow fields. Finally, the broadband noise of the centrifugal fan was predicted through combination the modeled noise source with the linear propagation which was realized using the boundary element method. It was confirmed that the proposed technique is efficient to predict the tonal and broadband noises of centrifugal fan through comparison with the measured data.

  • Interaction between the unsteady flow emitted from the blade of the centrifugal fan and the volute tongue region of fan duct is known as the main noise source of the centrifugal fan. In this paper, the relative contributions of the volute tongue region of the centrifugal fan is analyzed to utilize as the foundation data of low noise design. The internal hybrid CAA (Computational Aero-Acoustics) method is used to predict noise radiated from the main noise source. This method is the noise prediction technique using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), Acoustic analogy, and BEM(Boundary Element Method). The relative contributions of the centrifugal fan volute tongue region using the hybrid CAA method show that the region between the cut-off and the scroll has high contribution than the region between the cut-off and the outlet and the hub region of blade has high contribution than the shroud region of blade. These results is utilized as the important data for the development of low noise centrifugal fan.

  • Using Lowson's acoustic analogy, low frequency noise of a wind turbine (WT) is predicted in time domain and the noise sources contributing to the low frequency noise is analyzed. To compute averaged pressure distribution on blades of the WT as noise source, XFOIL is utilized. The blade source domain is divided into several segments along the span direction to compute force exerted on air surrounding the blade segments, which is used as input for noise prediction. The noise sources are decomposed into three terms of force fluctuation, acceleration and velocity terms and are analyzed to investigate each spectral contribution. Finally, predicted spectra are compared with measured low frequency noise spectrum of a wind turbine in operation. It is found that the force fluctuation component contributes strongly in low frequency range with increasing wind speed.

  • In this study, the main focus is the simulation of acoustic wave scattering in trailing edge and the analysis of the generation mechanism of instability wave by the interaction of trailing edge, shear flow and initial disturbance. The numerical algorithm is based on CFD/CAA hybrid method with high-order computational aeroacoustic method. It is found that steady mean flow gradient terms play a crucial role on the generation of instability wave through the comparison of simulations of Simple Linearized Euler Equation and Full Linearized Euler Equation. Through the comparison with the results of Full Navier-Stokes Equation, it is reasonable and efficient to use the Full Linearized Euler Equation in the initial generation mechanism of the instability wave near the trailing edge.

  • In this paper, the flow performance and aero-acoustic noise generated by the target centrifugal fan system were investigated numerically and experimentally. Also, the numerical method for Computational Aero-Acoustics were evaluated by comparing each method. To analyze the performance of the centrifugal fan experimentally, the acoustic power level was measured in the semi-anechoic chamber using microphones, and the active frequency range for the noise performance was identified and that frequency range was applied for Computational Aero-Acoustics (CAA) techniques as sampling frequency. Then, Navier-Stokes equation and the Ffowcs Williams&Hawking equations were used to analyze the flow and sound power numerically, respectively, and a virtual acoustic radiation plane was designed and used for the implementation of the sound field. The accuracy and numerical characteristics of the numerical methods were validated by comparing simulated acoustic power levels with acoustic power levels measured.

  • In this study, low noise designs of a Savonius wind turbines are numerically investigated. From a previous study, it was found that the high harmonic components whose fundamental frequency is higher than the BPF were found to be dominant in noise spectrum of a Savonius wind turbine. On a basis of this observation, S-shaped blade tip is proposed as a low design factors that decrease wind turbine noise by inducing phase differences in vortex shedding. The conventional Savonius and S-shaped turbines are investigated using Hybrid CAA method where flow field around the turbine are computed using CFD techniques and the radiated noise are predicted by applying acoustic analogy to the computed flow data. Noise reductions by these design factors are confirmed by comparing the predicted noise levels from these turbines.

  • The internal broadband noise of a centrifugal fan in a household refrigerator is predicted using hybrid CAA techniques based on stochastic turbulent synthetic model. First, the unsteady flow field around the centrifugal fan is predicted using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) method. Then, the turbulent flow field is synthesized by applying the stochastic turbulent synthetic technique to the predicted flow field. The aerodynamic noise sources of the centrifugal fan are modeled on a basis of the synthesized turbulent field. Finally, the internal broadband noise of the centrifugal fan is predicted using the boundary element method(BEM) and the modeled sources. The predicted noise spectrum is compared with the experimental data. It is found that the predicted result closely follows the experimental data. The proposed method can be used as an effective tool for designing low-noise fans without expensive computational cost required generally for the LES and DNS simulations to resolve the turbulence flow field responsible for the broadband noise.

  • In this study, low noise designs for a Savonius wind turbine were numerically investigated. As was reported in our previous study, the harmonic components with a fundamental frequency higher than the BPF were identified as being dominant in the noise spectrum of a Savonius wind turbine, and these components were a result of vortex shedding. On a basis of this observation, an S-shaped blade tip is proposed as a means of reducing the noise generated by small vertical(Savonius) wind turbines. This blade induces phase differences in the shedding vortices from the blades, and thus reduces the noise from the wind turbine. The aerodynamic noise characteristics of the conventional and "S-shaped" Savonius turbines were investigated by using the Hybrid CAA method where the flow field around the turbine is computed using the CFD techniques and the radiated noise are predicted by applying acoustic analogy to the computed flow field data. The degree of noise reduction resulting from the proposed design and its reduction mechanism were confirmed by comparing the predicted noise spectrum of these turbines and the flow characteristics around them.
