  • Samhwajahyangyakbang, a medical book of Hyangyak which was presumed to be published by Samhwaja in the late Goryeo dynasty, became the original source of Hyangyakganibang. As Hyangyakganibang became the original source of Hyangyakjesengjipseongbang which was supplemented to be Hyangyakjipseongbang, Samhwajahyangyakbang is a fundamental book which is the original source of Hyangyak medical books such as Hyangyakganibang and Hyangyakjipseongbang in the late Goryeo and the early Chosun dynasty. I restored the articles of Samhwajahyangyakbang, mainly focusing on the remaining articles in Hyangyakjipseongbang, followed by supplementing some other remaining articles with the help of , a database of old medical books, and then, recorded and discussed the results in the paper. 1. The remaining articles of Samhwajahyangyakbang were found in Hyangyakjipseongbang, Uibo and Uibanghappyeon. Among them, there is a prescription which is not overlapped in Uibanghappyeon. 2. The classification system of Hyangyakjipseongbang was alternatively adopted due to the absence of classification or table of contents in Samhwajahyangyakbang. 3. There are a total number of 152 articles in the restored Samhwajahyangyakbang and 151 articles out of the total number have been restored from Hyangyakjipseongbang. There are 5 articles which remain as notes in the citations of other books in Hyangyakjipseongbang. 4. There are a total number of 246 prescriptions in the restored Samhwajahyangyakbang. 5. Even though Samhwajahyangyakbang is a concise medical book, it is one of the core medical books which are cited in Hyangyakjipseongbang. In addition, it is the most frequently cited in Hyangyakjipseongbang among the Korean medical books. It implies that the compilers of Hyangyakjipseongbang considered Samhwajahyangyakbang the most valuable book among the Hyangyak medical books. It is speculated that such results could be achieved because Samhwajahyangyakbang was very popular in those days and its' printing quality was also good. On the contrary, the number of citations of Hyangyakgugeupbang is much less than that of Samhwajahyangyakbang. It is presumed that Hyangyakgugeupbang could not be distributed widely not because it was less valuable but because its' printing quality was poor.

  • Objective : Printed in early Chosun dynasty Hyangyakjipseongbang quoted several medical books that were published at that time. Yuyaoyuanfang was printed in Yuan dynasty, China and imported to Chosun dynasty. However, Yuyaoyuanfang was vanished in history and another Yuyaoyuanfang, which is now-exist[Guisixinkan-Yuyaoyuanfang], was printed in Japan. In Hyangyakjipseongbang, Yuyaoyuanfang are mentioned 31 times but Yuyaoyuanfang quoteded in Hyangyakjipseongbang is quite different from Guisixinkan-Yuyaoyuanfang. Therefore, we had interests of those differences and tried to find out them in article. Method : We use the method of comparing quotations of Yuyaoyuanfang in Hyangyakjipseongbang with Guisixinkan-Yuyaoyuanfang. Result : 4 of 31 prescriptions of Yuyaoyuanfang quoteded in Hyangyakjipseongbang does not exist in Guisixinkan-Yuyaoyuanfang and several parts such as symtoms, herbs, taking methods of prescriptions are different from each other. Conclusion : Hyangyakjipseongbang prove the fact that Guisixinkan-Yuyaoyuanfang is not original form of Yuyaoyuanfang.

  • Objective : In "Hyangyakjipseongbang" there are quotation remark as "Jipseong", that means "Hyangyakjipseongbang" because this is self-quotation. The contents of "Jipseong" that "Hyangyakjipseongbang" mentioned are in "Yifangjicheng". So "Jipseong" means abbreviation of "Yifangjicheng" and "Jipseong" should be "Jicheng". Method : We will try to do bibliographical methods on "Jicheng" and the books related to "Jicheng" through "Isekigo", "Zhongyiyijidacidian" and "Zhongguoyijitongkao". Result : "Yifangjicheng" is not handed down but the contents of that are in "Yifangdacheng". There are three differnt types(authors) of "Yifangdacheng". One of "Yifangdacheng" was enlarged to "Yifangdacheng". In "Euibangyoochui" there are several qutations such as "Yifangdacheng", "Yishudadian", "Nanbeijingxianfang", "Yongleilingfang" ralated to "Yifangjicheng". Conclusion : "Jipseong" mean "Yifangjicheng" instead of "Hyangyakjipseongbang" and there are some kinds of books related to the similar contents of "Jicheng".

  • In researches done previously, the characteristics of the Hyangyak medicine in the early period of Chosun shown in "HyangyakBoncho(鄕藥本草)" in Vol. 76-85 of "Hyangyakjipseongbang(鄕藥集成方)" and "Sanghan section(傷寒門)" in Vol. 5-8 of "Hyangyakjipseongbang(鄕藥集成方)" was investigated. "Cough section(咳嗽門)" in "Various Diseases volume" of "Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑 雜病篇)" Vol. 5 and "Various Coughs section(諸咳門)" of "Hyangyakjipseongbang(鄕藥集成方)" Vol 24-25 which is a paragraph related to "Sanghan section(傷寒門)" was compared. The variety of the Hyangyak, processing methods and forms of the Hyangyak were shown by comparing each oriental medical botany(本草) used for treating cough(咳嗽) in "Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑)". Subsequently, the difference between each structure and medical theory was speculated. The facts revealed in this research is as follows. First, [Various Coughs section(諸咳門)] of "Hyangyakjipseongbang(鄕藥集成方)" uses only the Hyangyak, and no foreign medicines were used for treating cough(咳嗽) in "Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑)". Second, in [Various Coughs section(諸咳門)] of "Hyangyakjipseongbang(鄕藥集成方)", medicines related to diet and medicines taken raw were widely used, and various forms of medicine such as extracts, plasters, and gruels were used. Third, like other medical books in earlier periods, [Various Coughs section(諸咳門)] of "Hyangyakjipseongbang(鄕藥集成方)" describes the medical theory with conciseness, and keeps the structure of symptom classification focused on treatment and prescription. Fourth, as [Hyangyakboncho(鄕藥本草)] extensively uses the knowledge of oriental medical botany(本草) from two of Four Masters of GeumWon(金 元); JangWonSo(張元素) and LeeDongWon(李東垣), "Various Coughs section(諸咳門)" of "Hyangyakjipseongbang(鄕藥集成方)" quotes the books of JuDanGae but does not adopt the theory and prescriptions of 'replenishing yin and downbearing fire (滋陰降火)'. To find a more descriptive picture of the Hyangyak medicine for the treatment of 'cough(咳嗽)', a comparatitive study between the books written in the same period -"Euibangyuchui(醫方類聚)" and books compilated in China should be done, and there should be more profound researches done on individual medicines and prescriptions.

  • More correlations are expected to be formed by comparing and analyzing three medical prescription texts, "Hyangyakjipseongbang", "Euirimchyalyo" and "Dongeuibogam". And to firmly systemize the medicine native to Korea, more studies should be done on it, added to comparatively studies of native medical prescription texts.

  • Samhwaja-hyangyakbang has been known as the book of herbalogy published by the man, Samhwaja. But there are no records about the additor, and the absence of the document, it is so difficult to be informed about the time when it published and other details. But in this document and Hyangyakgugeubbang, there are similar prescriptions to Sublingual Inflammation, Aphtose, Anthrax, Furoncle, Ulcer, Dysentery, etc. So the time it published is estimated to Goryo-dynasty Gojong epoch(1232-1251) when the Hyangyakgugeubbang was published. In addition, this document seems to be basis of Hyangyakjipseongbang, Because, Hyangyakjipseongbang quoted more than 140 provisions from this document. Prescriptions that are different from other books in dosage or taking method, took those of Biyebaekyobang. In explanation or classification of disease, this document almost copied those of Biyebaekyobang, so this document take Biyebaekyobang for origin and take Sikeuisimkam, Taepyungseonghyebang, etc, for reference.

  • The 85 books were compiled into Hyangyakjipseongbang(鄕藥集成方) at the period of the king Sejong(世宗). That books were assembled in the late stage of the Korea dynasty(高麗) and the first stage of the Chosun dynasty(朝鮮). It is a great work on medicine and a textbook of native herbs representating independent medicine of the dynasty of Chosun. The original text was written in technical chinese character terms and this was processed with a newly developed text cognizance program which helped decrease the time and energy needed and increase accuracy. We hope that the ground work and experience gained from this process would be analyzed and used for future in computerized information management for medical classic literature.
