The fungal pathogen Monosporascus annonballus was first isolated in Korea from the rotted roots of bottle gourd stocks of collapsed watermelon plants in fields near Chochiwon, Choongnam province in July, 1993. Perithecia of M. cannonballus were dark brown to black, globose, 220~570 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diam. and had many asci. Asci are hyaline, clavate to pyriform, and 50~120$\times$35~570 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size. Ascospores were aseptate, dark brown to black, globose, 25~45$\times$30~50 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diam, and borne singly in each ascus. The fungus grew in the temperature range of 4 to 34$^{\circ}C$, best at 3$0^{\circ}C$. The optimum pH for growth was 6.8. Mycelial growth rate of M. cannonballus was 25.5mm/day on PDA at 26$^{\circ}C$. Perithecia began to form after 20-day-growth on PDA and produced mature asci after 30 days or later. In the greenhouse inoculation tests, the fungus developed water-soaked lesions on roots of bottle gourd seedlings and was then reisolated from the lesions. Severed damages on watermelon plants by M. cannonballus are greatly concerned in Korea, since no stocks used for watermelon cultivation have reported to be resistant to the fungus.
Purpose: Livedo vasculitis is recurrent painful ulceration of the feet, ankles and legs characterized by purpuric papules and plaques that undergo superficial necrosis and healing with residual white atrophic scars (atrophie blanche). The typical histopathologic findings of livedo vasculitis are characterized by endothelial proliferation and hyaline degeneration along with thrombosis of dermal vessels. Standard therapeutic strategies for treatment of livedo vasculitis are usually on the basis of rheologic, anti-inflammatory or immnosuppressive treatments, a aspirin, dipyridamole, glucocorticosteroids, pentoxyfylline, or high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin are often ineffective or partially effective. Methods: We report a case of 24-year-old male patient with livedo vasculitis on the ankles and dorsal surfaces of both feet. Results: The lesion that had been unresponsive to medical treatment were successfully healed with complete debridement and skin grafting without recurrences. Conclusion: Surgical treatment can be one of the therapeutic choice in Livedo vasculitis.
The popcorn disease caused by sclerotia forming fungi reduces the productivity of mulberry fruits in world wide. In Korea, only two species (Ciboria shiraiana and Scleromitrula shiraiana) have been reported as the major causal organisms and their morphological features are also largely unknown. Hereby, we report the first identification of another species (i.e. Ciboria carunculoides) in Korea and detailed features of their anamorphic stage. Fungi dominantly associated with sclerotia were purely isolated from infected mulberry fruits under the microscope. PCR-amplified DNA encoding 5.8S rRNA displayed 100% similarity to Ciboria carunculoides. The anamorphic features exhibited the absence of true mycelia. Instead, very short, aseptated, branched conidiophores were directly emerged from sclerotia. Phialides were usually three in number from each conidiophore, ampuliform to navicular in shape, slightly curved and tapering towards the apex. Conidia were produced from phialides and mostly found as one celled, pear shaped, not hyaline with smooth to uneven surface walled. Diversely modified features in phialides formed pseudo-mycelial structures around the host tissue. Combined all, current study is the first report of C. carunculoides isolated in Korea and the foremost detailed description of its anamorph stage.
A sex cord tumor with annnular tubules is a relatively rare ovarian neoplasm. The cytologic findings from a fine needle aspiration biopsy of neck metastasis of a sex cord tumor with annnular tubules are described. The origin of the neck metastasis was the right ovary, and the tumor was diagnosed six years ago. The cytologic findings were characterized by tumor cells arranged in solid or follicular patterns. The tumor cells formed rosette-like or complex tubular structures with central rounded or coalesced hyaline materials. It was difficult to distinguish this tumor cytologically from granulosa cell tumor, thyroid follicular neoplasm, Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor, and Brenner tumor, but complex tubular structures were helpful in discriminating between these tumors.
The sex cord tumor with annular tubules(SCTAT) is a rare ovarian neoplasm, which charateristically shows simple and complex annular tubules with central acidophilic hyaline bodies. This tumor has been considered as a tumor of low-grade malignancy with late recurrence. We presented a brief case report of metastatic SCTAT of ovary in pleural fluid from ovary with cytopathologic and clinical features. The cytologic features of differential diagnosis are discussed.

A case of plasmacytoma of the ovary and breast, which developed in a patient with a solitary plasmacytoma in the lumbar vertebra for nine months, was diagnosed cytologically and histologically. Enlargement of the right ovary and multiple palpable masses in the right and left breast were already present at six months after the diagnosis of vertebral solitary plasmacytoma. At eight months, plasma cell leukemia developed, and nine months the enlarged both ovaries, replaced by yellowish-gray solid tumors showed infiltration of immature plasma cells. The cytologic features of the ovarian tumors were same with those of the breast tumor. The tumor cells were of predominantly immature plasma cells with one or more nuclei. Some mature plasma cell had an eccentric nucleus with single nucleolus and peripherally clumped chromatin. Binucleated or multinucleated giant cells were often present. Histologically, sheets of poorly differentiated plasmacytoid tumor cells were separated by strands of hyaline fibrous tissue. On immunohistochemical stains, the tumor cells showed strong reactivity for lambda-light chain but no reaction for kappa-light chain, cytokeratin, or leukocyte common antigen.
This study was undertaken to determine the effects of HCG and trout pitutary on sexual maturation and ovulation in the Korean loach, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus. Sexual maturation was observed in the fish treated with 250+125 IU HCG within 2-4 days following injections. Total ovary weight and GSI were significantly greater in the hormone-treated fish than in the control fish. Furthermore, in the hormone-treated fish body weight increased by about 4-9 percent in 2 days. The water content of the ovulated eggs of the fish treated with 250+125 IU HCG was also greater than that in the control. Changes in both macroscopic & microscopic appearnce of Korean loach ovaries are describled, as well as changes in the gonadosomatic index. Oocytes pass through seven cytologically changes in the relative stages. By examining these stages, it was found that oogenesis occures in two broad phases. The previtellogenic phasebegins as a new oogonia continues to arise following spawning. These rapidly develop into early perinucleolus oocytes, which in turn develop into resting stage oocytes. Most oocytes remain in this stage when they develop into late perinucleolus oocytes. The vitellogenic phase begins as these late perinucleolus oocytes become transformed into early maturing oocytes through the accumulation of yolk. The cytoplasm completely fills with yolk as oocytes reach the late maturing stage. Shortly before spawning the final hyaline stage of developing is reached. Changes in the microscopic appearances of the ovaries were well correlated with changes in both gonadosomatic index and macroscopic appearance.
While preparing a floristic study of Korean hepatics, we discovered the 4 unrecorded species Alobiellopsis parvifolius, Calypogeia japonica, Hattoria yakushimensis and Nardia subclavata. A. parvifolius is often confused with Solenostoma fusiforme (Steph.) Amak. in appearance, but the former differs by occasional presence of underleaves and a large hyaline outer cells of stem. C. japonica is similar to C. tosana (Steph.) Steph. The former, however, is separated from the latter by 2-3 biconcentric oil-bodies per cell compared to 3-5 grape oil-bodies per cell. H. yakushimensis is a monotypic genus based on a Japanese species. This genus is characterized by unlobed, closely imbricate leaves with margins distinctly incurved and usually pigmented with a reddish purple color. N. subclavata is similar to N. assamica (Mitt.) Amakawa in large underleaves and globular oil-bodies. The former, however, is separated from the latter by convex trigones versus concave trigones, smooth cuticles versus smooth to verrucose cuticles, and oil-bodies occurring in each cell versus occurring in approximately half or fewer leaf cells.
Medullary thyroid carcinoma constitutes about 5-10% of all thyroid malignancies, but rare in children. It has frequent association with multiple endocrine neoplasia(MEN) and frequent familial occurrence. They are derived from parafollicular cells of thyroid glands and produce calcitonin. They are capable of local invasion, spread to regional lymph nodes, or distant metastases. Histopathologically, the lesions are characterized by sheets of non-follicular cells surrounded by deposits of hyaline amyloid. Aggressive surgical intervention is recommended due to the propensity of medullary thyroid carcinoma for local microvascular invasion, late recurrence and metastasis. A total thyroidectomy is generally recommended because of the high incidence of bilaterality. Recently, authors experienced a case of medullary carcinoma in child. We report this case with review of the literatures.
Vermamoeba vermiformis is a very important free-living amoeba for human health in association with Legionnaires' disease and keratitis. This interesting amoeba was firstly isolated from a freshwater of Dokdo (island), which was historically used for drinking water. Trophozoites and cyst forms of V. vermiformis strain MG1 are very similar to previous reported species. Trophozoites of V. vermiformis strain MG1 showed cylindrical shape with prominent anterior hyaline region. The average ratio of length and width was about 6.5. Typically, cysts of the strain MG1 showed a spherical or slightly ovoidal shape with smooth wall, and lacked cyst pores. Some cysts had crenulate-walled ectocyst, which was separated from endocyst wall. Further, 18S rRNA gene sequence of V. vermiformis strain MG1 showed very high similarity to other V. vermiformis species (99.4%-99.9% identity). Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on 18S rRNA gene sequences clearly confirmed that the isolate was one strain of V. vermiformis with maximum bootstrap value (maximum likelihood: 100%) and Bayesian posterior probability of 1. Thus, the freshwater of Dokdo in Korea could harbor potentially pathogenic amoeba that may cause diseases in humans.
