General Properties and Ferric Oxide Content of Hwangtoh(Yellow Ochre) (황토의 일반적 특성 및 산화철 함량)

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the general properties and main ingridients of Hwangtoh, which is the Korean loess. It is well known as a raw material of pottery shown to be widely scattered on the earth, especially in Korea. It belongs to primary clay that was found to be rich on mountain surface or field. In this study, XRF Spectral method was employed to analyze the chief ingredients of Hwangtoh, being found to consist of $43{\sim}50%\;SiO_2,\;2{\sim}34%\;Al_2O_3,\;2{\sim}3%\;Mg,\;2{\sim}3%\;Na\;and\;1{\sim}2%\;K$. The ferric oxide contents of Hwangtoh from San Chung, Ha Dong, Ko Ryung, Ouk Chong, Bang Gae and Song Kwang were 6.46, 7.96, 11.26, 9.36, 9.06 and 9.28 %, respectively. The general characteristics of Hwangtoh from different places were studied by determining the content of water and the capacity to maintain temperature. Based on the above results, Hwangtoh could be said to have better quality than primary clay of Kaolin dose, and also would be able to find an application in construction formulations.

Physical and Mechanical Properties of Dry-Hwangtoh Mortar (기건 황토모르타르의 물리.역학적 특성)

  • This study is performed to examine the dry Hwangtoh mortar. The unit weight is in the range of $1,891kg/m^3{\sim}2,037kg/m^3$, it tend to decrease with increase using the Hwangtoh. The compressive and bending strength are in the range of $105kgf/cm^2{\sim}353kgf/cm^2,\;18kgf/cm^2{\sim}66kgf/cm^2$, respectively. The mortar of using Hwangtoh 20% is showed the highest strength ratio.

Flow and Engineering Properties of Fiber Reinforced Hwangtoh Mortars

  • In this study, six mortar mixes were tested in order to examine the significance and limitations of hydrophilic fiber in terms of its capacity to enhance the tensile resistance of Hwangtoh mortar. Lyocell, polyamide and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers were selected for the main test parameters. The tensile capacity of mortars tested was evaluated based on the splitting tensile strength and the modulus of fracture, while their ductility was examined using the toughness indices specified in ASTM. Test results showed that the addition of lyocell and PVA fibers had little influence on the flow of the Hwangtoh mortars. To enhance the tensile capacity and toughness index of Hwangtoh mortar, it is proposed that fiber spacing above 0.0003 is required, regardless of the type of fiber.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study investigate method and effect of Hwangtoh as Korean traditional therapy. Methods : This is literature study with books, and thesis for Korean traditional Hwangtoh therapy. Result : The physical therapy that is in use nowadays, especially thermotherapy has been around since human started to live on the earth. This primitive Korean traditional physical therapy with Hwangtoh have used in common. Historical records show that some kings in those days recommended to their men these methods to treat any chronic disease or illness. This was often thought of as positive means of treatment. Conclusion : Korean traditional physical therapy has been developed, and its scientific effects have been proven. Korean traditional physical therapy is used extensively in hospital and clinics to treat many kinds of diseases and illness and need for scientifical research and data regarding any unproven physical therapy technique.

  • The Hwangtoh is one of the traditional construction material used in wall, plastering material, and ondol (Korean underfloor heating system) with stone and wood. It is an important greenness material and it has much advantages such as; high storage of heat, auto-purification, antibiotic ability, and emission of far infrared rays. But, it is not developed and not used in modern construction because of its low strength and properties of dry shrinkage crack. According to the recent researches and studies, it is evaluated for natural pozzolanic material like flyash or pozzolan. It's possibility on construction material is high because it's chemical and mineralogical proportion is like as Metakaolin and Kaolinite. In this point of view, this study aims to analyze the physical properties on Hwangtoh mortar through an experiment with various activation condition of Hwangtoh, which is natural pozzolanic material, for the purpose of increase the using possibility in construction material.

  • Since artificial building materials and environmental contamination are getting worse recently, people has been interested in eco-friendly construction. In addition, the problems like Sick Building Syndrome are issued these days. In order to solve these problems, the reuse of building materials and the development of environment-friendly materials are urgently in demand. In this sense, Hwangtoh is in the limelight as the environment-friendly material, and broad studies on it have been in progress. However the reactivity of Hwangtoh is low, and without activation process it is very hard to use it as a building material. This study examined the usability of Hwangtoh as an environmental building material by experimenting the reactivity of inactivated Hwangtoh with Reaction Induction Material.

  • Pozzolan is to improve the strength and the durability of concrete as a result of the pozzolanic reaction, Broadly speaking, pozzolanic materials can be artificial materials, such as slica fume and fly ash, and natural material, such as rice husk ash, clay, volcanic ash, clayish pozzolan. Hwangtoh is a mineral which belongs to a group of matakaolin, especially halloysite, and the main elements is SiO$_2$, Al$_2$O$_3$, Fe$_2$O$_3$. The purpose of this study is to examine the application of Hwangtoh for the concrete admixtures, the composition of this study is shown as follows. Chapter I is analysis for properties of concrete as the kinds of admixture, and Chapter H is analysis for properties of concrete as the replacement ratio of activated Hwangtoh. As a result of this study, Hwangtoh is found to have high practical use as pozzolanic material, and the pertinent range of replacement ratios of Hwangtoh on cement are 10∼20 %.

NOx Reduction Performance in Cement Mortar with TiO2 Treatment and Mineral Admixture (무기계 혼화재료를 혼입한 모르타르 시편의 광촉매 처리를 고려한 NOx 저감 성능)

  • In this study, the mechanical properties, absorption, and reduction performance of NOx in the mortar containing mineral admixture like zeolite and active hwangtoh were evaluated. Zeolite and active hwangtoh were used as binder, and zeolite and active hwangtoh were substituted for cement. The substitution ratio of two types of mineral admixtures was considered as 20 and 30% respectively. As a result of evaluating the compressive strength and flexural strength of each mortar specimen, the highest strength in the plain mixture was evaluated. As the substitution ratio of zeolite and active hwangtoh increased, the compressive and flexural strength decreased. In addition, the difference of compressive and flexural strength between active hwangtoh and zeolite mixing was evaluated to be insignificant. To evaluate the absorption rate, the mixture was designed to lower the W/B ratio of the existing mixture and set the substitution ratio of active hwangtoh and zeolite at 25%. The highest absorption ratio in the mortar with zeolite was evaluated, and the difference in absorption ratio between the remaining two mortar mixtures was small. The assessment of reduction performance of NOx considering the application of photocatalyst showed a clearly decreasing reduction behavior, even if they were the same mortar mixture. Zeolite and active hwangtoh also showed a higher NOx reduction than the Plain mixture, because of their porosity properties. In the case of active hwangtoh, the absorption ratio was lower than that of zeolite mixture, but the reduction of NOx performance was better than the result of zeolite mixture.

Effect of Hydration Heat and Drying Shrinkage of Mass Concrete Using Hwangtoh Binder (황토결합재를 이용한 매스콘크리트의 수화열과 건조수축 효과)

  • In this paper, the applicability of hwangtoh, as an alternative of cement paste, is investigated for the solution of internal heat and shrinkage caused by the hydration of cement paste. Several small-sized specimens of hwangtoh and ordinary portland concrete(OPC) were compared as to compressive strength, heat of hydration, and shrinkage strain. Moreover, the applicability of mass structure was reviewed through the test of large-size specimens. The 28-day compressive strength of hwangtoh concrete(HBC), ranged 18 to 33 Mpa, can reach that of ordinary portland concrete. Not only the maximin internal temperature of HBC was read about 1/4 of OPC as it is cured, but also its drying shrinkage decreased as lower as 50% of OPC starting from 60 days. Therefore, hwangtoh binder is more favorable than cement one in the view of hydration heat and shrinkage under the construction of mass structures.

  • This paper reports the results of experimental study on the effects of replacement level of hwangtoh or slag on the flexural behavior of reinforced hwangtoh-concrete beams. All the beams were singly reinforced with longitudinal bar ratio p=0.5pb and were tested under two-point top loading. The flexural strengths obtained from tests, such as initial cracking strength, serviceability strength, maximum strength, were compared with ACI 318-02.
