  • Physiological characteristics of five new apple cultivars from the Korean apple breeding program were evaluated as a function of harvest time and storage after harvest. Internal ethylene concentration (IEC), flesh firmness, soluble solids concentration (SSC), and titratable acidity (TA) were measured in 'Summer Dream', 'Summer King', 'Green Ball', 'Picnic', and 'Hwangok' apples at harvest, during shelf life at $20^{\circ}C$, and one day after cold storage at $0.5^{\circ}C$ in air. IEC increased during shelf life in 'Summer Dream', 'Summer King', and 'Green Ball' but not in 'Picnic' or 'Hwangok', regardless of harvest time. Flesh firmness decreased towards harvest time and decreased gradually with time in cold storage only in the former three cultivars. In turn, IEC increased during cold storage in the first three cultivars but not for the last two cultivars, irrespective of harvest time. Changes in SSC and TA did not consistently relate to harvest time or storage period but TA tended to decrease as IEC increased. Furthermore, IEC was negatively correlated with flesh firmness except in the 'Green Ball' cultivar but the significance level was much greater in 'Summer Dream' and 'Summer King' (p < 0.0001) than in 'Picnic' (p < 0.01) or 'Hwangok' (p < 0.05) cultivars. Flesh firmness was positively correlated with TA in the first three cultivars but not in the last two cultivars. Overall, the results indicate that cultivars for which IEC increased after harvest had reduced flesh firmness and TA after storage.

  • This study was conducted to test on the resistance of varieties bred by crossing with Asominori to bacterial leaf blight. Nakdongbyeo and Dongjinbyeo which were susceptible to HB 9011, 8 resistant varieties including Ilmibyeo derived from Asominori and Asominori, Hwangok, 13 varieties including Chukoku 45 which were resistance to HB 9011, HB 9022 and HB 9033 were used to screen their res ponce depending on the various screening methods such as the true resistance, the secondary infection resistance and the disease common field test methods, and the results are as follows: Among 13 varieties tested, 11 varieties including llmibyeo showed tme resistance to HB 9011. Less than 1.0cm of disease lesion were developed on these varieties. Disease lesion was not developed on most of the Asominori lines including Daechongbyeo against IIB9011 and 1lmibyeo was also resistance to HB 9011, on this variety disease lesion area rate was 1.2%, and 7 varieties including Hwajinbyeo showed field resistance to HB 9022. Disease lesion area rate were 19.6% on Nakdongbyeo. 15.6% on Dongjinbyeo, from 3.0% to 2.4% on Asominori lines, and 0.5% on the Asominori when screened at disease common area. Disease was not developed on Keumnambyeo. Significant correlation coefficiences were found between the results from the test methods of the true resistance, the field resistance ancl the field resistance at disease common field tests on Asominori lines, but in some cases, even the varieties on which disease lesions developed, showed field resistance to HB 9022 and HB 9033.

  • This study aimed to understand the pre-capitalistic distributional system in association with politics and economics by examining the distributional system between 1876 (the opening of a port era) and 1910. The study revealed that the distributional system reflected the political and economic characteristics and changes of the pre-capitalistic society. The examination indicated the following implications and questions. First, we need a new narrative of Chosun's distributional system before the period of Japanese occupation. Chosun's distributional system can be identified as a self sufficient system (Hwan-gok). Second, most social welfare literature discuss private self sufficient system such as Gye or Hwang-Yak as the distributional system in the pre-modern Chosun; however, this does not accurately explain the system of Chosun society. Implication of such findings are discussed.

  • The experiments were carried out in farmers' field to determine the yield response of corn to fertilizers for the three years (1976-1979) The results are summarized as follow: 1. The optimum application rates of N-P-K fertilizers on corn cultivars was 21.1-11.6-10.6 kg/10a for Suweon 19, 23.0-11.9-15.0 kg/10a for Boggyo 2 and 19.8-10.6-9.1 kg/10a for Hwangok 3, and 23.3-19.1-10.7 kg/10a in drained paddy soil. 2. The optimum application rates of N-P-K fertilizers was 23.4-15.5-13.2 kg/10a in fertile soil comparing with 27.0-15.6-18.8 kg/10a in the soil of low fertility. However yield was lower in soil of low fertility than in fertile soil even under the condition applied optimum amount. 3. Production efficiencies of each kg of N, P, K application for Suweon 19, Boggyo 2, and Hwangok 3 were 26.1-24.5-9.7, 17.8-13.3-2.0, and 14.6-21.5-4.2kg. respectively. 4. The optimum nutrient content in soil and plant to yield 1,000 kg/10a of corn was available phosphorus 200 ppm, exchangeable potassium 0.63 me/100g, potassium saturation rate 5.0% in soil, and nitrogen 2.86%, phosphorus 0.73%, potassium 2.80% in plant at tasseling stage.

  • Since 1962, varietal development and dissemination for summer upland crops have been actively initiated by the Crop Experiment Station, Office of Rural Development, Suweon, Korea. The major breeding objectives of soybeans have been to develop varieties which are early maturing, disease resistant, and adaptable to late planting for after-barley cropping. Development of eleven new soybean varieties including Hwangkeumkong, Jangyeobkong, Danyeobkong, and Kwangkyo has greatly increased the soybean yield throughout country. For com, after development of Hwangok #2, a synthetic, in early 1960's, nine corn hybrids-single crosses, double-crosses, and three-way crosses-such as Jecheon-ok, Hoengseong-ok, Kwangok, Suweon #19, etc., have been disseminated mainly to Kangweon province, a major corn producing area in Korea, and drew up the yield over 4 tons per hectare. The major breeding objectives of sweet potato have been to develop varieties which have high starch content and root yield. Hwangmi, Hongmi, and Shinmi are three sweet potato varieties developed and disseminated by the Crop Experiment Station, Office of Rural Development and are grown most widely in Korea. Most of researches on cultural practices of upland crops have begun on a full scale from early 1960's. In soybeans, for example, no fertilizer but for barley was applied although the effects of phosphate and potassium fertilizers were great on soybeans in after-barley soybean croppings. The effects of heavy application of phosphate and calcium fertilizers on soybeans in newly reclaimed soils were recognized. Recently a mixed fertilizer for soybean (N; 40, P:70, K:60 kg/㏊) was developed and sold for soybean growers. The optimum planting densities of 220, 000 plants/ha in full-season cropping and 330, 000 pts/ha in after-barley cropping of soybeans were known from repeated experiments. For higher yield, a means of cultural practices such as transplanting-pinching, direct planting-pinching, and hilling-up, etc., were developed along with barley-stubble planting with no tillage and integrated herbicide application for labour savings. For sweet potato, cultural practices for planting date, harvesting date, fertilizer, and planting density were fully established. For early marketing, a technique of vinyl-mulching on sweet potato has also fully developed. For com, planting density of 37, 000 pts/ha in early 1960's has been changed to 55, 000 pts/ha for grain production and 67, 000 pts/ha for silage. The amounts of fertilizers have also been changed from 120-120-120kg/ha (N-P-K) in early 1960s to 180-150-150 kg/ha. These increases in number of plants per unit area and fertilizer levels have resulted in greater production for both grain and silage. At the same time, the production techniques of F1 seeds have also improved.

  • Seven seed samples of corn obtained from Kangweon Provincial Office of Rural Development, Kerea were tested for seed-borne fungi, and found that all the samples tested were infected with Fusarium moniliforme to an extent of $6.0{\sim}79.5%$. Severely infected seed samples showed poor germination on blotter. Seed component plating showed that the fungus present not only in tip caps, pericarps and endosperms, but also in embryos. Heavy infection of the fungus caused severe seed rot and seedling blight in soil, but the damage was not severe and many plants grew without any symptoms when the seeds with light infection were sown in soil. However the fungus was frequently detected from inside of the stems of healthy looking seedlings. The results indicate that the fungus transmit from seed to plant systemically. In inoculation experiments, the fungus produced stem rots on corn plants of 110 days old. The cultivar of Hwangok 3 was revealed more susceptible to the fungus than that of Suweon 19.
