  • Effects of temperature and relative humidity on contents of water-soluble vitamins (vitamins $B_1,\;B_2,\;B_3,\;B_6$, and C) of two commercial tablets ("Multivitamin Dandelion" and "Chewable vitamin C") were investigated. When stored at various temperatures (25, 35, and $45^{\circ}C$) with cap, all measured vitamins were stable and degraded very slowly during 24 weeks of storage; low relative humidity (11% RH) without cap also provided stability during storage period. At higher relative humidities (75 and 100% RH), contents of all water-soluble vitamins, except vitamins $B_2\;and\;B_3$, decreased significantly at early storage period. These results showed that stability of water-soluble vitamins is highly dependent on relative humidity rather than storage temperature.

  • Effects of the open level of the side window were studied to control the temperature and relative humidity in the fog cooling greenhouse. The greenhouse was cooled by air atomizing spray nozzles of the air and water two-fluid process. The control process includes the measuring of environmental variables, setting and coding of the water balance equations and heat balance in greenhouse, calculating of the roof window open and spray water, and operating of the motor and pump. The target temperature and relative humidity were set at $28^{\circ}C$, 75%, respectively. The three modes of the side window open level were 0%, 50% and 100%. The average dry bulb temperatures of the inside air were 28.2, 27.2 and $26.3^{\circ}C$, respectively and their standard deviation was ranged from $0.4^{\circ}C$to $0.8^{\circ}C$. Also the relative humidity of the 0% mode was the best controlled one with the average of 76.3% and the standard deviation of 2.1%.

  • Korea, located in East Asia in the northern hemisphere, is experiencing severe climate changes. Specifically, the heat stress caused by global warming is negatively affecting the dairy sector, including milk production and reproductive performance, as the major dairy cattle Holstein-Friesian is particularly susceptible to heat stress. Here, we collected artificial insemination and pregnancy data of the Holstein and the Jersey cows from a dairy farm from 2014 to 2021 and analyzed the association between the conception rate and the temperature-humidity index, calculated using the data from the closest official weather station. As the temperature-humidity index threshold increased, the conception rate gradually decreased. However, this decrease was steeper in the Holstein breed than in the Jersey one at a temperature-humidity index threshold of 75. To evaluate the effects of heat stress on the oocyte quality, we examined the nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation of Holstein (n = 158, obtained from six animals) and Jersey oocytes (n = 123, obtained from six animals), obtained by ovum pick-up. There were no differences in the nuclear maturation between the different conditions (heat stress: 40.5℃, non- heat stress: 37.5℃) or breeds, although the Holstein oocytes seemed to have a lower metaphase II development (p = 0.0521) after in vitro maturation under heat stress conditions. However, we found that the Holstein metaphase II oocytes exposed to heat stress presented more reactive oxygen species and a peripheral distribution of the mitochondria, compared to those of the Jersey cattle. Here, we show that weather information from local meteorological stations can be used to calculate the temperature-humidity index threshold at which heat stress influences the conception rate, and that the Jersey cows are more tolerant to heat stress in terms of their conception rate at a temperature-humidity index over 75. The lower fertility of the Holstein cows is likely attributed to impaired cytoplasmic maturation induced by heat stress. Thus, the Jersey cows can be a good breed for the sustainability of dairy farms for addressing climate changes in South Korea, as they are more resistant to hyperthermia.

  • Oak mushroom(Lentinus edoes(Berk) Sing) is one of the most important edible mushrooms, and its production has been rapidly increased due to nutritional and medicinal effects. In this study, climatic factors during the growing period of high-quality oak mushroom were analyzed and environmental factors affecting the quality of oak mushroom were discussed. Three places(Changheung, Puyo and Wonj) as mass producing areas of high-quality oak mushrooms and the 15 days of the growing period in 1997-1998 were selected. Major climatic factors for analysis were average air temperature, average relative humidity, ranges of daily air temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed. During the period, th daily average air temperature was $7~20^{\circ}C$ with the diurnal air temperature($7~20^{\circ}C$) and nocturnal air temperature($0~-2^{\circ}C$). The relative humidity ranged between 50 and 70% with the range of daily relative humidity(40~60%). Wind velocity was 1~4m.$s^{-1}$, From the results, it is concluded that the growing environmental conditions for high-quality oak mushroom differed from the optimum conditions for the high productivity of oak mushroom; environmental conditions such as wide ranges of air temperature and relative humidity, low humidity and wind speed might affect the emergence of high-quality oak mushroom.

  • A one-dimensional numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the effects of inlet gas humidities, inlet gas pressures, and thicknesses of membrane on the performance of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell. It is found that the relative humidity of inlet gases at anode and cathode sides has a significant effect on the fuel cell performance. Especially, the desirable fuel cell performance occurs at low relative humidity of the cathode side and at high humidity of the anode side. In addition, an increase in the pressure ranging from 1 atm to 4 atm at the cathode side results in a significant improvement in the fuel cell performance due to the convection effect by a pressure gradient toward the anode side, and with decreasing the thickness of membrane, the fuel cell performance is enhanced reasonably.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the decomposition efficiency of $NH_3$ odor gas using high frequency surface discharge body. The results from this study are as follows; 1, Voltage and frequency of electric elements have effects on removal of $NH_3$ odor. The higher these two elements were set up, the more efficiently deodorizing processing worked. In this experiment, the optimum voltage and frequency applicable were observed around AC 6.0 kVp-p and 24.0 kHz respectively. 2. The temperature, humidity and residence time were observed strong variables for NH$_3$ removal process. Its performance had limits at high temperature and humidity conditions. The longer the residence time continued, the more efficiently deodorization process worked. The experimental results showed that the deodorization was efficiently processed under such conditions as $30.0^{\circ}C$ in temperature, 60rh% in humidity and 0.3 sec in residence time. 3. It was observed that in deodorization experiment, $NH_3$ odor gas was perfectly decomposed under the concentration condition below 15.0ppm. Moreover it was considered as economic and practical in terms of maintenance cost when compared with other deodorization methods.

  • The soil-to-air fluxes of three PAHs(Phenanthrene, Pyrene, Benzo(a)pyrene) from a laboratory contaminated forest soil were investigated in experimental microcosms. The effects of soil temperature(45$^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, 5$^{\circ}C$) and relative humidity(0%, 100%) were investigated according to existence of the humic layer(O layer) over the mineral layer(A layer). Volatilization flux experiments were carried out for a period of 96 hrs. The resulting PAHs volatilization fluxes from the different conditions were quantified and compared. In the mineral layer, highest volatilization flux among the individual PAHs was Phenanthrene >Pyrene> Benzo(a)pyrene on the conditions of 45 $^{\circ}C$, RH=100%. In the humic layer over the mineral layer, maximum volatilization flux was Phenanthrene on the condition of 45$^{\circ}C$, RH=0%. Results from flux experiments showed that volatilization fluxes of PAHs were dependent on soil temperature. Existance of humic layer over the mineral layer delayed transportation to the air of especially heaveir molecular PAHs. But, if humic layer is contained water sufficiently, it is possible that volatilization fluxes are enhanced by water convective flux according to variation of soil temperature and air relative humidity.

  • In this study alkali activation of Electric Arc Furnace Slag (EAFS) is studied with a comprehensive test program. Three different silicate moduli (1-1,5-2), three different sodium concentrations (4%-6%-8%) for each silicate module, two different curing conditions (45%-98% relative humidity) for each sodium concentration, two different curing temperatures ($400^{\circ}C-800^{\circ}C$) for each relative humidity condition and two different curing time (6h-12h) for each curing temperature variables are selected and their effects on compressive strength was evaluated then regression equations using multiple linear regressions methods are fitted. And then to select the best regression models confirm with using the variables, the regression models compared between itself. An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models that use silicate moduli, sodium concentration, relative humidity, curing temperature and curing time variables, are formed. After the investigation of these ANN models' results, ANN and multiple linear regressions based models are compared with each other. After that, an explicit formula is developed with values of the ANN model. As a result of this study, the fluctuations of data set of the compressive strength were very well reflected using both of the methods, multiple linear regression with quadratic terms and ANN.

  • Purpose: The aims of this study were to define the drying characteristics of rapeseed and to determine the optimum thin-layer drying model for rapeseed by considering the effects of drying temperature and relative humidity. Methods: The thin-layer drying experiments were conducted at different combinations of drying air temperature levels of 40, 50, and $60^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity levels of 30, 45, and 60%, on both of which drying rate depends. The drying rate increased with increasing air temperature as well as decreasing relative humidity. The 13 models were fitted to the experimental data. Results: From the results of the regression analysis for empirical constants of the Page model, the values of $R^2$ were the highest (ranging from 0.9924 to 0.9966) and the values of RMSE were the lowest (ranging from 0.0169 to 0.0296). Conclusions: For all drying conditions considered, the Page model was determined to be the most suitable model for describing the thin-layer drying of rapeseed (P-value < 0.01). The moisture diffusion coefficients were calculated using the moisture diffusion equation for a spherical shape, based on Fick's second law.
