  • Undergraduate freshmen are currently encountering numerous difficulties in adapting to college life due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, several studies have underlined the need to develop interventions focused on undergraduate students' resilience during this situation. We adopted the service design method in identifying the difficulties faced by undergraduate freshmen during this pandemic, and also developed interventions for raising their resilience. The service design method is a person-centered approach which adopts the user's viewpoint in developing solutions, thereby enabling their requirements to be satisfied. Surveys and in-depth interviews revealed that undergraduate freshmen were experiencing psycho-emotional problems which were derived from schoolwork and college life. This is particularly the case with students who are experiencing greater levels of academic difficulty, and were insufficiently equipped with resources such as stress-coping strategies and social support. Four undergraduate freshmen were recruited online to test the effectiveness of a resource promotion program aimed at enhancing their resilience. This program has proved to be helpful in relieving daily/academic stress and in building relationships among freshmen, regarding which the participants showed a high level of satisfaction. The results were discussed by focusing on psycho-emotional difficulties and resources of college freshmen, as well as the effectiveness of the resource promotion program. Further research is required in order to verify the efficiency of the program and to confirm conclusions.

  • The cold image of digital culture and its realistic limits force modern people to yearn for an emotional world characterized by a warm humanity. The kind of digital technology that appeals to such a human emotion is accepted as a new digital concept in the 21st century. The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of emotionality, which was a new trend in digital culture, and to discuss its form and meaning in fashion sector. It's basically meant to figure out a major trend in the 21st century's digital culture, to delve into its relationship with fashion reflecting sociocultural phenomena, and ultimately to describe in which direction future fashion would be led. Emotionality was highlighted as a reaction against an absolute pursuit of speed and cold digital technology. Emotionality of digital culture in fashion design were inserting of funology, Zen-based design and development of a clothing mixture. The emphasis of emotionality in digital culture is a new sociocultural trend that stresses the recovery of human nature. As futurologists predict that a human-centered and humanistic culture will reappear in the 21st century, fashion also will be in pursuit of human-oriented design.

  • In this study, we aimed to propose enhancements to the dimensions and design of walking aids tailored for elderly women. Specifically, we focused on wheeled walking assistance devices and aligned each structural component with the appropriate human body dimensions to suggest appropriate product dimensions organized by size clusters, aiming to maximize the practicality of the results. We extracted essential factors required for product design, including human body size elements. The dimension extraction method was clustered to establish connections between key human body parameters-such as height, weight, and age groups-and product dimensions. We conducted a comparative analysis of walking aid product dimensions according to the design elements and sizes of models currently available in the market. The outcomes of this study offer objective, data-driven insights into areas where existing models on the market could benefit from improvement and we anticipate that the findings of this study will provide a solid, quantitative foundation for individuals when selecting the most suitable model for their needs.

  • Ethnography, a major research method in Anthropology, has been recently applied in human-centered design research. Since ethnography has empirical, naturalistic, holistic and eclectic characteristics, it is needed a guideline to apply ethnography into design research in accordance with a characteristic of project. Design project in which ethnography is applied can be categorized by two criteria; degree of newness of project goal(existing user-potential user) and limitedness of worksite(site-oriented-work-oriented). Among work-site activities, technology in use, and user group culture, it should be decided which content to content to focus more than others and thus what kinds of research techniques to apply in the ethnographic research.Case study was to design an interior of a Korean express train. This project is site-oriented and has an existing-potential users. Therefore, video ethnography was effectively applied to obtain chronological data of activity potential users. Therefore, video ethnography was effectively applied to obtain chronological data of activity flow, and participant observation was applied to obtain statistical data of synchronous activities. Case study shows a concrete process example of how to apply ethnography into design research.

  • The purposes of this research are to correctly understand the relationship between a visual communication structure and a semantic communication structure when integrating and changing various architectural visual information. This study will classify various diagrams, which have been actively applied to the works of Rem Koolhaas and MVRDV when designing architecture, and based on the classification, it will analyze how the expression viewpoints inherent in the diagrams are changed and applied to processing and changing architectural visual information. The transformal usage of the visual information of architectural diagrams is classified into an analysis-centered processing method and a concept-centered processing method, and the characteristics of their usage are analyzed. The former shows an observer-centered expression viewpoint which effectively delivers an architect's analyzed architectural information or intent to a customer or an observer. It also allows an easy perception of the analyzed data, and uses qualitative expression viewpoints. The method combines systematic expression viewpoints, which value a relationship with visual information, and various architectural visual information; uses the combined expression viewpoints as one diagram for delivering various information simultaneously and for changing visual information. The latter shows author-centered subjective expression viewpoints, which are different from reproduction-centered fixed expression viewpoints. This method uses arbitrary expression viewpoints that overly extort, change or manipulate visual information. It shows simultaneous expression viewpoints that integrate various architectural visual information via omniscient expression viewpoints, such as reversing or projecting the points of viewing subjects, which human beings cannot perceive.

  • For the design of human-centered systems in which a human and machine such as a robot form a human-in system, human-friendly interaction/interface is essential. Human-friendly interaction is possible when the system is capable of recognizing human biosigns such as5 EMG Signal, hand gesture and facial expressions so the some humanintention and/or emotion can be inferred and is used as a proper feedback signal. In the talk, we report our experiences of applying the Soft computing techniques including Fuzzy, ANN, GA and rho rough set theory for efficiently recognizing various biosigns and for effective inference. More specifically, we first observe characteristics of various forms of biosigns and propose a new way of extracting feature set for such signals. Then we show a standardized procedure of getting an inferred intention or emotion from the signals. Finally, we present examples of application for our model of rehabilitation robot named.

  • Emotional design gets more and more important. However, the systematical approaches to integration of user experience elements in product design have been rarely tried. This study consists of three parts. We extracted affective words fitting to design direction based on trend analysis. Then, user experience elements were matched with affective words. Finally, a prototype system was made to guide designing affective factors in electronic products. In the present study, user experience elements were defined as color, material & finishing, and sound. Through various documents analysis and trend analysis, trend analysis experts and user experience designers extracted 31 affective keywords which could fully reflect current trend. After paired-comparison of selected keywords, 2 sensibility dimensions were obtained by multidimensional scaling. Trend affective keywords could be explained by 2 dimensions of human-centered' vs. 'techno-centered' and 'warm vs. cool'. Next, user experience elements stimuli were matched with each keyword by user direct positioning on the 2 dimensions affective map. Based on the result of the experiment, the prototype system was developed for the product designers. The results of the current study could guide designers to design emotionally satisfactory products.
