  • For next-generation electronic applications, human-machine interface devices have recently been demonstrated such as the wearable computer as well as the electronic skin (e-skin). For integration of those systems, it is essential to develop many kinds of components including displays, energy generators and sensors. In particular, flexible sensing devices to detect some stimuli like strain, pressure, light, temperature, gase and humidity have been investigated for last few decades. Among many condidates, a pressure sensing device based on organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) is one of interesting structure in flexible touch displays, bio-monitoring and e-skin because of their flexibility. In this study, we have investigated a flexible e-skin based on highly sensitive, pressure-responsive OFETs using microstructured ferroelectric gate dielectrics, which simulates both rapidly adapting (RA) and slowly adatping (SA) mechanoreceptors in human skin. In SA-type static pressure, furthermore, we also demonstrate that the FET array can detect thermal stimuli for thermoreception through decoupling of the input signals from simultaneously applied pressure. The microstructured highly crystalline poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) possessing piezoelectric-pyroelectric properties in OFETs allowed monitoring RA- and SA-mode responses in dyanamic and static pressurizing conditions, which enables to apply the e-skin to bio-monitoring of human and robotics.

  • Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are added to different food products for a long time due to health beneficial effects on human host. LAB is applied in dairy products, such as yoghurt, cheese, and various fermented products, and also in non-dairy products, such as sausages. However, reaching the human gut alive as well as in a sufficient cell amount to exert positive health effects is still a big challenge, due to LAB sensitive character and vulnerability against harsh and detrimental conditions in human digestive system. Keeping physiological activity of sensitive LAB strains alive is for the formulation of novel food products with a probiotic health claim of utmost interest, thus microencapsulation has been applied and investigated as a promising technique for a good and reliable protection. Microencapsulation allows reduced cell injury or cell loss by retaining cells within the encapsulating membrane and can be enforced by spray-drying, emulsion, extrusion, and a range of other technologies in combination with an appropriate coating material, such as alginate, chitosan, and mixture of these two polymers. In this review, established and well-studied microencapsulation techniques with their favored coating materials, as well as the recent applications of microencapsulated LAB into dairy products will be discussed.

  • For the specific detection of human Parvovirus B19 (HuPaV-B19), we designed ten specific PCR primers from 3,800~4,500 nucleotides of HuPaV-B19 complete genome (NC_000883.2). Seventeen candidate PCR primer sets for specific detecting HuPaV-B19 were constructed. In specific reaction of HuPaV-B19, seventeen PCR primer sets showed specific band, however five PCR primer sets were selected basis of band intensity, amplicon size and location. In non-specific reaction with seven reference viruses, four PCR primer sets showed non-specific band, however one PCR primer set is not. Detection sensitivity of final selective PCR primer set was $100fg/{\mu}L$ for 112 minute, and PCR amplicon is 539 base pairs (bp). In addition, nested PCR primer set was developed, for detection HuPaV-B19 from a low concentration of contaminated samples. Selection of nested PCR primer set was basis of sensitivity and groundwater sample tests. Detection sensitivity of final selective PCR and nested PCR primer sets for the detection of HuPaV-B19 were $100fg/{\mu}L$ and $100ag/{\mu}L$ basis of HuPaV-B19 plasmid, it was able to rapid and highly sensitive detection of HuPaV-B19 than previous reports. We expect developed PCR primer set in this study will used for detection of HuPaV-B19 in various samples.

  • Cerebral blood vessels relax when extracellular $K^+$ concentrations $([K^+])_e$ are elevated moderately $(2{\sim}15$ mM, $K^+-induced$ vasorelaxation). We have therefore studied the underlying mechanism for this $K^+-induced$ vasorelaxation in the isolated middle cerebral arteries (MCAs). The effects of ouabain and $Ba^{2+}\;on\;K^+-induced$ vasorelaxation were examined to determine the role of sodium pump and/or Ba-sensitive process (possibly, inward rectifier K current) in the mechanism. Mulvany myograph was used to study 24 rats, 18 rabbits, and 10 humans MCAs $(216{\pm}3\;{\mu}m,\;347{\pm}7\;{\mu}m,\;and\;597{\pm}39\;{\mu}m$ in diameter when stretched to a tension equivalent to 55 mmHg). High $K^+$ (125 mM) and $PGF_{2{\alpha}}\;(1{\sim}10\;{\mu}M)$ induced concentration-dependent contractions in all 3 species, while histamine $(10{\sim}50\;{\mu}M)$ evoked contraction only in the rabbits and induced relaxation in the rats and humans. Addition of $K^+\;(2{\sim}10\;{\mu}M)$ to the control solution induced vasorelaxations. These effects were inhibited by the pretreatment with both ouabain $(10\;{\mu}M)$ and $Ba^{2+}\;(0.1{\sim}0.3\;mM)$ in the rat, but only with ouabain $(10\;{\mu}M)$ in the rabbit and human. These results suggest that $K^+-induced$ vasorelaxation occurs via the stimulation of electrogenic Na pump in the rabbit and human MCAs, while in the rat MCAs via the activation of both Na pump and Ba-sensitive process.

  • One of the possible mechanisms of multi-drug resistance found in cancer cells is the over-expression of Pglycoprotein (P-gp). Studies have shown that compounds in plants including vegetables and fruits not only have anticancer activities but may also modulate P-gp activity. The effect of flavonoids and organic isothiocyanate on P-gp activity was studied in human uterine sarcoma cell lines, MES-SA (sensitive) and MES-SA/DX5 (resistant) cells. The accumulation of daunomycin (DNM), a P-gp substrate, was approximately 10 times greater in the sensitive cell as compared to the resistant cells over the entire time course (up to 2 hours). The positive control, verapamil increased the two hour accumulation of DNM while quercetin decreased that of DNM in the resistant cells. 1-Naphtyl-isothiocyanate (NITC) showed no effect on the two hour accumulation of DNM. The $IC_{50}$ values for DNM in the resistant cells was about 20 times higher than that observed in the sensitive cells $(10.1{\pm}1.7\;{\mu}M\;vs.\;0.58{\pm}0.28\;{\mu}M)$. Verapamil reduced the $IC_{50}$ value for DNM whereas flavonoids (quercetin and fisetin) increased those for DNM in the resistant cells.

  • To develop a $^{13}C-urea-containing$ capsule for more economic and sensitive diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection, the $^{13}C-urea-containing$ capsules were prepared with various additives such as polyethylene glycol, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium lauryl sulfate and citric acid. Their dissolution test and $^{13}C-urea$ Breath Test in human volunteers were then performed. Polyethylene glycol increased the initial dissolution rates of urea and difference ${\sigma}$ $^{13}C$ values from $^{13}C-urea$, while microcrystalline cellulose and sodium lauryl sulfate decreased them. Irrespective of addition of citric acid, the compositions with polyethylene glycol showed higher values from $^{13}C-urea$ compared to a commercial 76 mg $^{13}C-urea-containing$ capsule due to higher initial dissolution rate. The capsules with 38 mg $^{13}C-urea$ and 1.9 mg polyethylene glycol, which showed higher Helicobacter pylori-positive value of about $8{\textperthousand}$ at 10 min, improved the sensitivity of $^{13}C-urea$ in human volunteers. Thus, the $^{13}C-urea-containing$ capsule with polyethylene glycol would be a more economical and sensitive preparation for diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection.

  • Multidrug resistance (MDR) is one of the most significant obstacles in cancer chemotherapy. One of the mechanisms involved in the development of MDR is the over-expression of P-glycoprotein (P-gp). It is widely known that natural compounds found in vegetables, fruits, plant-derived beverages and herbal dietary supplements not only have anticancer properties, but may also modulate P-gp activity. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of naturally occurring products on P-gp function in human breast cancer cell lines, MCF-7 (sensitive) and MCF-7/ADR (resistant). The accumulation of daunomycin (DNM), a P-gp substrate, was greater in the sensitive cells compared to the resistant cells, while the efflux of DNM was higher in the resistant cells compared to the sensitive cells over a period of 2h. The $IC_{50}$ value of DNM in the resistant cells was about 22 times higher than that in the sensitive cells, indicating an over-expression of P-gp in the resistant cells, MCF-7/ADR. All of the compounds tested, with the exception of fisetin, significantly decreased the $IC_{50}$ value of DNM. Biochanin A showed the greatest increase in $[^3H]-DNM$ accumulation, increasing by $454.3{\pm}19.5%$ in the resistant cells, whereas verapamil, the positive control, increased the accumulation by $229.4{\pm}17.6%$. Also, the accumulation of $[^3H]-DNM$ was increased substantially by quercetin and silymarin while it was reduced by fisetin. Moreover, biochanin A, silymarin, and naringenin significantly decreased DNM efflux from MCF-7/ADR cells compared with the control. These results suggest that some flavonoids such as biochanin A and silymarin may reverse MDR by inhibiting the P-gp function.

  • In this paper we present a system that enables the user to interact with large display system even without touching the screen. With two infrared sensitive cameras mounted on the bottom left and bottom right of the display system pointing upwards, the user fingertip position on the selected region of interest of each camera view is found using vertical intensity profile of the background subtracted image. The position of the finger in two images of left and right camera is mapped to the display screen coordinate by using pre-determined matrices, which are calculated by interpolating samples of user finger position on the images taken by pointing finger over some known coordinate position of the display system. The screen is then manipulated according to the calculated position and depth of the fingertip with respect to the display system. Experimental results demonstrate an efficient, robust and stable human computer interaction.

  • The yardstick of value has transformed into personal and sensitive one after it went through an Industrial society. The space in the society of sensitivity is defined by a semiotic character rather than as a physical object aimed at satisfying basic desire. Through this character, space makes a meaning and comes to exist an exchanging productive place. Environmental transformation is demanding further ample sensitive expression. In connection with the above, this thesis aims to identify the characteristics of sensitive and human-centered approach and systematize the analogy analysis which is applied to the interior space, classified by elements by introducing the concept of analogic inference in the field of rhetoric and through a diverse genres. As an approach, this thesis is entitled the analogic inference of the field of rhetoric to various art genres, and as a analogic interpretation genre, this thesis Is subdivided it into the fields of literature, image, fashion, flower art, and visual design, and study the analysis of analogic inference as a means of materializing storied space through the connection literature with design.
