With the development of robot technology, the expectation of autonomous mission operations has increased, and the research on robot control architectures and mission planners has continued. A scalable and robust control architecture is required for unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) to perform a variety of tasks, such as surveillance, reconnaissance, and search and rescue operations, in unstructured and time-varying maritime environments. In this paper, we propose a robot control architecture along with a new utility function that can be extended to various applications for USVs. Also, an additional structure is proposed to reflect the operator's command and improve the performance of the autonomous mission. The proposed architecture was developed using a robot operating system (ROS), and the performance and feasibility of the architecture were verified through simulations.

Large scale display panel(LSDP) is a main component in the next generation main control rooms. LSDP is located at the front of VDU-based operator's workstation and plays an important role in providing operators with overall information of plant status through mimic diagram, text/digit, graph, and so on. A critical matter determined at the first stage of LSDP design is how much information is displayed, because the information density of LSDP affects operator's performance. Many human factors guidelines recommend low information density of displays to avoid degrade of operator's performance, but doesn't provide a useful limit of information density. In this paper, we considered information density as the number of plant parameters and investigated the proper number of plant parameters through a human factors experiment. The experiment with 4 subjects was carried out and response time, error, and heart rate variation as criterion measures were recorded and analyzed. As the results, it is identified that the proper number of parameters in a LSDP is about thirty.
A reactor protection system (RPS) plays the roles of generating the reactor trip signal and the engineered safety features (ESF) actuation signal when the monitored plant processes reach predefined limits. A Korean project group is developing a new digitalized RPS and the Cabinet Operator Module (COM) of the RPS which is used for the RPS integrity testing and monitoring by an equipment operator. A flat panel display (FPD) with a touch screen capability is provided as a main user interface for the RPS operation. To support the RPS COM user interface design, actually the FPD screen design, we developed a user interface style guide because the system designer could not properly deal with the many general human factors design guidelines. To develop the user interface style guide, various design guideline gatherings, a walk-though with a video recorder, guideline selection with respect to user interface design elements, determination of the properties of the design elements, discussion with the system designers, and a conversion of the properties into a screen design were carried out. This paper describes the process in detail and the findings in the course of the style guide development.

The intelligent human-machine interface (HMI) has been developed to enhance the safety and availability of a nuclear power plant by improving operational reliability The key elements of the HMI are the large display panels which present synopsis of the plant status and the compact, digital work stations for the primary operator control and monitoring functions. The work station consists of four consoles such as a dynamic alarm console (DAC), a system information console (SIC), a computerized operating-procedure console (COC), and a safety related information console (SRIC). The DAC provides clean alarm pictures, in which information overlapping is excluded and alarm impacts are discriminated, for quick situation awareness. The SIC covers a normal operation by offering all necessary plant information and control functions. In addition, it is closely linked with the DAC and the COC to automatically display related system information under the request of these consoles. The COC aids the operator with proper emergency operation guidelines so as to shutdown the plant safely, and it also reduces his physical/mental burden by automating the operating procedures. The SRIC continuously displays safety related information to allow the operator to assess the plant status focusing on plant safety. The proposed HMI has been validated and demonstrated with on-line data obtained from the full-scope simulator for Yonggwang Units 1,2.

Current methods for construction site modeling employ large, expensive laser range scanners that produce dense range point clouds of a scene from different perspectives. Days of skilled interpretation and of automatic segmentation may be required to convert the clouds to a finished CAD model. The dynamic nature of the construction environment requires that a real-time local area modeling system be capable of handling a rapidly changing and uncertain work environment. However, in practice, large, simple, and reasonably accurate embodying volumes are adequate feedback to an operator who, for instance, is attempting to place materials in the midst of obstacles with an occluded view. For real-time obstacle avoidance and automated equipment control functions, such volumes also facilitate computational tractability. In this research, a human operator's ability to quickly evaluate and associate objects in a scene is exploited. The operator directs a laser range finder mounted on a pan and tilt unit to collect range points on objects throughout the workspace. These groups of points form sparse range point clouds. These sparse clouds are then used to create geometric primitives for visualization and modeling purposes. Experimental results indicate that these models can be created rapidly and with sufficient accuracy for automated obstacle avoidance and equipment control functions.

When abnormal operating conditions occur in nuclear power plants, operators must identify the occurrence cause and implement the necessary mitigation measures. Accordingly, the operator must rapidly and accurately analyze the symptom requirements of more than 200 abnormal scenarios from the trends of many variables to perform diagnostic tasks and implement mitigation actions rapidly. However, the probability of human error increases owing to the characteristics of the diagnostic tasks performed by the operator. Researches regarding diagnostic tasks based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been conducted recently to reduce the likelihood of human errors; however, reliability issues due to the black box characteristics of AI have been pointed out. Hence, the application of eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI), which can provide AI diagnostic evidence for operators, is considered. In conclusion, the XAI to solve the reliability problem of AI is included in the AI-based diagnostic algorithm. A reliable intelligent diagnostic assistant based on a merged diagnostic algorithm, in the form of an operator support system, is developed, and includes an interface to efficiently inform operators.
There has been a growing need for interaction between human operator and a remote system to perform a complex task in an unpredictable environment and to operate an important work at a remote distance. The interaction becomes an important parameter in the teleautonomous operation because it permits the operator to control the system at remote distance. As the environmental uncertainties to be applied are getting increased, so is the difference between the plan of the operator and the execution of the system increased. Since the operator may be difficult to know the latest information from frequently changing environment due to time-varying delays, remote system may be hard to control in accordance with the operators command. Interactive Teleautonomous Control System (ITCS) is an approach based on interactions at these environments. The ITCS can be regarded as a control system using the transmitted a system's intnetion. The interactive teleautonomous control does not mean the interaction from operators point of view only considering feedback environmental information and forward simulation but an interaction between the operator and the system that transmits or receives intentions. The proposed ITCS is based on the intention communication that transmits their intentions to each other. The ITCS can correctly control the system in accordance with the operator's intention. Using the intention communication, a system intention is helpful to the operator. In the interactive teleautonomous control, the intention communication has to be provided by the interaction between the operator and the system.
Objective: The aim of this study is to introduce an operator console design review system suitable for designing and evaluating consoles based on human factor guidelines for a digitalized main control room in an advanced nuclear power plant which has a requirement for anthropometric data usage. Background: The system interface of the main control room in a nuclear power plant has been getting digitalized and consists of various consoles with many information displays. Console operators often face human-computer interactive problems due to inappropriate console design stemming from the perceptual constraints of anthropometric data usage. Method: Computational models with a process of visual perception and variables of anthropometric data are used for designing and evaluating operator consoles suitable for human system interface guidelines, which are used in an advanced nuclear power plant. Results: From the computational model and simulation application, console dimensions and a designing test module, which would be used for designing suitable consoles with safety concerns in a nuclear power plant, have been introduced. Conclusion: This case study may influence employing a suitable design concept with various anthropometric data in many areas with safety concerns and may show a feasible solution to designing and evaluating the safety console dimensions. Application: The results of this study may be used for designing a control room with the human factors requiring a safe working environment.
Objective: This study describes the change of operator performance in drastic change of illumination level, and proposes an alternative method to cope with it. Background: The control standard of illumination for nuclear power plants(NPPs) is based on the set of limit criteria for maintaining a specific illumination level. However, there is a possibility to cause human errors according to the psychological and physiological influences to operators in the situation of drastic change of illumination such as SBO(Station Black Out), so a basic study is necessary to review the current approach. Method: We assessed the visual fatigue, subjective work load and task performance according to the three illumination situations(Normal Illumination, Emergency Illumination, and Drastic Change of Illumination). Result: Research finding shows that there are not significant differences in task performance between normal illumination (1,000lx level) and emergency illumination (100lx level), only if beyond the dark adaptation limit. However, subjective work load on mental demand and visual fatigue show a potential challenge to visual performance in drastic change of illumination. Conclusion/Application: Several trials can complement this challenge in NPPs by applying 3-way communication, enhancing readability of procedures, and managing the visual factors affecting the operators' performance through a Visual Environment Management Program including visual health aspects, etc.
