A progressive image transmission (PIT) scheme based on the classified transform vector quantization (CVQ) technique using the lapped orthogonal transform (LOT) and human visual system (HVS) weighting is proposed in this paper. Conventional block transform coding of images using DCT produces in general undesirable block-artifacts at low bit rates. In this paper, image blocks are transformed using the LOT and classified into four classes based on their structural properties and further divided adaptively into subvectors depending on the LOT coefficient statistics with HVS weighting to improve the reconstructed image quality by adaptive bit allocation. The subvectors are vector quantized and transmitted progressively. Coding tests using computer simulations show that the LOT/CVQ based PIT of images is a effective coding scheme. The results are also compared with those obtained using PIT/DCTVQ. The LOT/CVQ based PIT reduces the block-artifacts significantly.
This paper proposes method to insert soong Watermark considering dull HVS properties to big change of Edge and Texture area. While conversion of existent Fourier form can acquire information for whole frequency ingredient of image, but Wavelet transform can look for Edge and Texture area locally. Therefore, use Wavelet transform to use HVS properites, and compare with Xia's Watermarking techniques to use Wavelet transform simply arid experimented these proposal algorithm. Experimented about fidelity and robusthness by attack method that is used in existing paper, and as a result, confirmed that proposal algorithm that use HVS properties is more superior than Xia's techniques.
This paper presents a robust watermarking approach that the frequency coefficients of the binary logo image are inserted in the DC and each frequency area of the host image for copyright protection of image data. We use the 1 level discrete wavelet transform(DWT) coefficients of 64*64 binary logo image as watermark because the presentation of a recognizable mark is much more convincing than numerical values and allows the opportunity to exploit the human visual system's ability to recognize a pattern. The proposed method makes use of 1-level DWT of the logo image, the DWT coefficients of the logo image are inserted by human visual system(HVS) and region of interest(ROI) in the frequency domain of the host image. Thereby, the detected logo image confirms copyright. Because small size watermark is inserted by HVS and ROI, the results confirm the superiority of the Proposed method on invisibility and robustness.

In thin-film transistor liquid-crystal displays (TFT-LCDs), which are most commonly used in mobile devices, the backlight accounts for about 70% of the power consumption. Therefore, most low-power-related studies focus on realizing power savings through backlight dimming. Image compensation is performed to mitigate the visual distortion caused by the backlight dimming. Therefore, popular techniques include pixel compensation for brightness recovery and contrast enhancement, such as histogram equalization. However, existing pixel compensation techniques often have limitations with respect to blur owing to the pixel saturation phenomenon, or because contrast enhancement cannot adequately satisfy the human visual system (HVS). To overcome these, in this study, we propose a novel dimming technique to achieve both power saving and HVS-awareness by combining the pixel compensation and histogram specifications, which convert the original cumulative density function (CDF) by designing and using the desired CDF of an image. Because the process of obtaining the desired CDF is customized to consider image characteristics, histogram specification is found to achieve better HVS-awareness than histogram equalization. For the experiments, we employ the LIVE image database, and we use the structural similarity (SSIM) index to measure the degree of visual satisfaction. The experimental results show that the proposed technique achieves up to 15.9% increase in the SSIM index compared with existing dimming techniques that use pixel compensation and histogram equalization in the case of the same low-power ratio. Further, the results indicate that it achieves improved HVS-awareness and increased power saving concurrently compared with previous techniques.

In this paper, attempts have been made to compare the subjective performance of sub-band coding (SBC) techniques incorporating four representative modulation transfer functions (MTF's) of th human visual system(HVS): Sakrison, Nill, Ngan, and Rao. In SBC, the frequency band of input signal is split into 16 equal sub-bands. In addition, 28 sub-band splitting schemd which splits more sub-bands in low spatial frequency is considered to compare the 4 MTF's effectively. In encoding of each sub-band, the weight of each sub-band obtained from the MTF of HVS is applied to bit allocation process which minimize the weighted mean square error (WMSE). The differential pulse code modulation(DPCM) coder is used to encode the lowest sub-band and the pulse code modulation(PCM) coder is used for the rest of sub-bands. It is found that the images incorporating the MTF of Rao yields the best results in subjective criteria, followed by Ngan, Nill, Sakrison, and the images not employing the HVS.

Various models incorporating Human Visual System (HVS) with the Hadamard transform (HT) represented by Walsh functions are considered. Using the exact frequency components of HT basis functions, the optimum modulation transfer function (MTF) which has a higher peak frequency than DCT schemes is obtimum modulation transfer function (MTF) which has a higher peak frequency than DCT schemes is obtained analytically and visually. The main criterion, for error measurement, is errors at the block boundaries which is an important factor in transform coding. The scheme which has no inverse HVS is proposed. It causes some degradation of image data but it is insignigicant. Crossing area of 4 blocks is equalized by the HVS weighting coefficients. The HVS weighted coding results in perceptually higher quality images compared with the unweighted scheme.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to propose contrast metric which is based on the human visual perception and thus it can be used to improve the quality of digital images in many applications. Methods: Previous literatures are surveyed, and then the proposed method is modeled based on Human Visual System(HVS) such as multiscale property of the contrast sensitivity function (CSF), contrast constancy property (suprathreshold), color channel property. Furthermore, experiments using digital images are shown to prove the effectiveness of the method. Results: The results of this study are as follows; regarding the proposed contrast measure of complex images, it was found by experiments that HVS follows relatively well compared to the previous contrast measurement. Conclusion: This study shows the effectiveness on how to measure the contrast of complex images which follows human perception better than other methods.
In this paper, we proposed robust digital image watermarking based on modulation transfer function (MTF) of human visual system (HVS). Using the proposed method, robust watermarking is possible both in common image processing operations such as cropping and lossy compression and in geometrical transforms such as rotation, scaling, and translation, because it can embed watermark and template signal maximally using MTF of HVS. Experimental results show that the proposed watermarking method is more robust to several common image processing operations and geometrical transforms.

In this paper, a spatial-based perceptual watermarking considering human visual system (HVS) that is proposed for small-size images such as internet shopping-mall image. In our method, a multi-bit data can be embedded in luminance component of color images still keeping the perceptual quality of image. Experimental results demonstrated that watermarks can be strongly embedded while preserving a good fidelity.
Recently, objective image quality assessment (IQA) methods that elaborately reflect the visual quality perception characteristics of human visual system (HVS) have actively been studied. Among those characteristics of HVS, luminance adaptation (LA) effect, indicating that HVS has different sensitivities depending on background luminance values to distortions, has widely been reflected into many existing IQA methods via Weber's law model. In this paper, we firstly reveal that the LA effect based on Weber's law model has inaccurately been reflected into the conventional IQA methods. To solve this problem, we firstly derive a new LA effect-based Local weight Function (LALF) that can elaborately reflect LA effect into IQA methods. We validate the effectiveness of our proposed LALF by applying LALF into SSIM (Structural SIMilarity) and PSNR methods. Experimental results show that the SSIM based on LALF yields remarkable performance improvement of 5% points compared to the original SSIM in terms of Spear rank order correlation coefficient between estimated visual quality values and measured subjective visual quality scores. Moreover, the PSNR (Peak to Signal Noise Ratio) based on LALF yields performance improvement of 2.5% points compared to the original PSNR.
