  • The purpose of this study is to develop a motion generation technique based on a double inverted pendulum model (DIPM) that learns and reproduces humanoid robot (or virtual human) motions while keeping its balance in a pattern similar to a human. DIPM consists of a cart and two inverted pendulums, connected in a serial. Although the structure resembles human upper- and lower-body, the balancing motion in DIPM is different from the motion that human does. To do this, we use the motion capture data to obtain the reference motion to keep the balance in the existence of external force. By an optimization technique minimizing the difference between the motion of DIPM and the reference motion, control parameters of the proposed method were learned in advance. The learned control parameters are re-used for the control signal of DIPM as input of linear quadratic regulator that generates a similar motion pattern as the reference. In order to verify this, we use virtual human experiments were conducted to generate the motion that naturally balanced.

  • In this paper, We performed the human body dynamic modelling for the realistic animation based on the dynamical behavior of human body, and designed controller for the effective control of complicate human dynamic model. The human body was simplified as a rigid body which consists of 18 actuated degrees of freedom for the real time computation. Complex human kinematic mechanism was regarded as a composition of 6 serial kinematic chains : left arm, right arm, support leg, free leg, body, and head. Based on the this kinematic analysis, dynamic model of human body was determined using Newton-Euler formulation recursively. The balance controller was designed in order to control the nonlinear dynamics model of human body. The effectiveness of designed controller was examined by the graphical simulation of human walking motion. The simulation results were compared with the model base control results. And it was demonstrated that, the balance controller showed better performance in mimicking the dynamic motion of human walking.

  • Human motion analysis is researched as a new method for human-robot interaction (HRI) because it concerns with the key techniques of HRI such as motion tracking and pose recognition. To analysis human motion, extracting features of human body from sequential images plays an important role. After finding the silhouette of human body from the sequential images obtained by CCD color camera, the skeleton model is frequently used in order to represent the human motion. In this paper, using the silhouette of human body, we propose the feature extraction method based on hybrid skeleton for detecting human motion. Finally, we show the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method through some experiments.

  • While a great number of studies on human motor control have provided a wide variety of viewpoints concerning the strategy of the central nervous system (CNS) in controlling limb movement, none were able to reveal the exact methods how the movement command from CNS is mapped onto the neuromuscular activity. As a preliminary study of human-machine interface design, the characteristics of human leg motion and its underlying motor control scheme are studied through experiments and simulations in this paper. The findings in this study suggest a simple open-loop motor control scheme in leg motion. As a possible candidate, an equilibrium point control model appears consistent in recreating the experimental data in numerical simulations. Based on the general leg motion analysis, the braking motion by the driver's leg is modeled.

  • Recognition of human motions using their 2-D images has various applications. An eigenspace method is employed in this paper for representing and recognizing human motions. An eigenspace is created from the images taken by multiple cameras that surround a human in motion. Image streams obtained from the cameras compose the same number of curved lines in the eigenspace and they are used for recognizing a human motion in a video image. Performance of the proposed technique is shown experimentally.

  • Grasping and manipulation by hands can be considered as one of inevitable functions to achieve the performances desired in humanoid operations. When a humanoid robot manipulates an object by his hands, each finger should be well-controlled to accomplish a precise manipulation of the object grasped. So, the trajectory of each joint required for a precise finger motion is fundamentally necessary to be planned stably. In this sense, this paper proposes an effective joint motion planning method for humanoid fingers. The proposed method newly employs a bio-mimetic concept for joint motion planning. A suitable model that describes an interphalangeal coordination in a human finger is suggested and incorporated into the proposed joint motion planning method. The feature of the proposed method is illustrated by simulation results. As a result, the proposed method is useful for a facilitative finger motion. It can be applied to improve the control performance of humanoid fingers or prosthetic fingers.

  • This paper present a novel approach to control the lower body power assistive exoskeleton system of a HEXAR-CR35 aimed at improving a muscular strength. More specifically the control of based on the human intention is crucial of importance to ensure intuitive and dexterous motion with the human. In this contribution, we proposed the detection algorithm of the human intention using the MCRS which are developed to measure the contraction of the muscle with variation of the circumference. The proposed algorithm provides a joint motion of exoskeleton corresponding the relate muscles. The main advantages of the algorithm are its simplicity, computational efficiency to control one joint of the HEXAR-CR35 which are consisted knee-active type exoskeleton (the other joints are consisted with the passive or quasi-passive joints that can be arranged by analyzing of the human joint functions). As a consequence, the motion of exoskeleton is generated according to the gait phase: swing and stance phase which are determined by the foot insole sensors. The experimental evaluation of the proposed algorithm is achieved in walking with the exoskeleton while carrying the external mass in the back side.

  • A new paradigm of technology, based on the overall interactions of technology, human and environment, is explored. History of technology and machines is reviewed in terms of the interactions of human and machines. Two main concepts of intelligent interactions proposed, holism and embodiment, are based on the interactions of machines and human through human body : Korperlichkeit ( corporeality). Human body movements are the result of long periods of evolution and, thus, are very optimized motions. Complicated and flexible motions could be easily achieved by mimicking human body movements. Motion capture and mimic systems based on the electromagnetic, visual, and gyroscopic type trackers, are being implemented to demonstrate these concepts. Also, various motion mappings are investigated on these interactive systems. By exploring a new paradigm of technology through Korperlichkeit, an oriental view of technology as relativities may evolve to embrace the limitations of western view of machines as an absolute independent form.
