  • Through accurate observation and the results of experimental studies using great apes, the author tells us exactly what we have not known about human communication. The author persuasively conveys to the reader the grand history of developing from great apes' gestures to human gestures, to human speech. Given that great apes and human gestures were the origin of human voice language, we have once again realized that our language is, after all, an "embodied language."

  • (Background) Recent biotechnological breakthroughs are shedding new lights on various ethical and legal issues about human biological material. Since Rudolph Virchow, a German pathologist, had founded the medical discipline of cellular pathology, issues centering around human biological materials began to draw attention. The issues involving human biological materials were revisited with more attention along with series concerns when the human genome map was finally completed. Recently, with researches on human genes and bioengineering reaping enormous commercial values in the form of material patent, such changes require a society to reassess the present and future status of human tissue within the legal system. This in turn gave rise to a heated debate over how to protect the rights of material donors: property rule vs. no property rule. (Debate and Cases) Property rule recognizes the donors' property rights on human biological materials. Thus, donors can claim real action if there were any bleach of informed consent or a donation contract. Donors can also claim damages to the responsible party when there is an infringement of property rights. Some even uphold the concept of material patents overtaking. From the viewpoint of no property rule, human biological materials are objects separated from donors. Thus, a recipient or a third party will be held liable if there were any infringement of donor's human rights. Human biological materials should not be commercially traded and a patent based on a human biological materials research does not belong to the donor of the tissues used during the course of research. In the US, two courts, Moore v. Regents of the University of California, and Greenberg v. Miami Children's Hospital Research Institute, Inc., have already decided that research participants retain no ownership of the biological specimens they contribute to medical research. Significantly, both Moore and Greenberg cases found that the researcher had parted with all ownership rights in the tissue samples when they donated them to the institutions, even though there was no provision in the informed consent forms stating either that the participants donated their tissue or waived their rights to ownership of the tissue. These rulings were led to huge controversy over property rights on human tissues. This research supports no property rule on the ground that it can protect the human dignity and prevent humans from objectification and commercialization. Human biological materials are already parted from human bodies and should be treated differently from the engineering and researches of those materials. Donors do not retain any ownership. (Suggestions) No property rule requires a legal breakthrough in the US in terms of donors' rights protection due to the absence of punitive damages provisions. The Donor rights issue on human biological material can be addressed through prospective legislation or tax policies, price control over patent products, and wider coverage of medical insurance. (Conclusions) Amid growing awareness over commercial values of human biological materials, no property rule should be adopted in order to protect human dignity but not without revamping legal provisions. The donors' rights issue in material patents requires prospective legislation based on current uncertainties. Also should be sought are solutions in the social context and all these discussions should be based on sound medical ethics of both medical staffs and researchers.

  • This paper treats the estimation of human impedance and their application to collaboration work robot. Initially, we performa an experiment at whcich teh human becomes a slave and the robot behaves like a master having F/T sensor on its end. the human impedance expressed interms of mass, damping, and stiffness properties are estimated based on the force data measured by F/T sensor and the positiion data of the robot. To show the effectiveness of the estimated human impedance, we perform the second experiment at which the roles of the human and the robot are reversed. It is shown that the robot using the estimated human impedance follows the trajectory commanded by human very smoothly.

  • Human milk, which nourishes the early infants, is a source of bioactive components for the infant growth, development and commensal formulation as well. Human milk oligosaccharide is a group of complex and diverse glycans that is apparently not absorbed in human gastrointestinal tract. Although most mammalian milk contains oligosaccharides, oligosaccharides in human milk exhibit unique features in terms of their types, amounts, sizes, and functionalities. In addition to the prevention of infectious bacteria and the development of early immune system, human milk oligosaccharides are able to facilitate the healthy intestinal microbiota. Bifidobacterial intestinal microbiota appears to be established by the unilateral interaction between milk oligosaccharides, human intestinal activity and commensals. Digestibility, membrane transportation and catabolic activity by bacteria and intestinal epithelial cells, all of which are linked to the structural of human milk oligosaccharides, are crucial in determining intestinal microbiota.

  • The chemical factory deals with dangerous element and more advance, human-error analyzes and becomes effective research for the country and region. This paper analysis the form of work-miss on human-error according to a safety accident for domestic chemical factory from 1999-2002. It include the present contents and raise issues human knowledge, behavior, judgment, sensibility as an important counter plan that makes the safety solution of work miss. For the point of view of human knowledge, it takes color standard for works to be effective in work place. For behavior, the test has been for risk Point of work place and infra worker movement, also the workers performed professional work as classify according to work. For judgement, the valuation sheet is reflected to minimize the human-error and the 3rd supervisor does a cross-check audit beforehand. For sensibility, it is applicable for human relations, information, communication by program to the consciousness and an attitude of worker-supervisor.

  • Human posture recognition is an attractive and challenging topic in computer vision due to its promising applications in the areas of personal health care, environmental awareness, human-computer-interaction and surveillance systems. Human posture recognition in video sequences consists of two stages: the first stage is training and evaluation and the second is deployment. In the first stage, the system is trained and evaluated using datasets of human postures to ‘teach’ the system to classify human postures for any future inputs. When the training and evaluation process is deemed satisfactory as measured by recognition rates, the trained system is then deployed to recognize human postures in any input video sequence. Different classifiers were used in the training such as Multilayer Perceptron Feedforward Neural networks, Self-Organizing Maps, Fuzzy C Means and K Means. Results show that supervised learning classifiers tend to perform better than unsupervised classifiers for the case of human posture recognition.

  • The human-following is one of the significant procedure in human-friendly navigation of mobile robots. There are many approaches of human-following technology. Many approaches have adopted various multiple sensors such as vision system and Laser Range Finder (LRF). In this paper, we propose detection and tracking approaches for human legs by the use of a single LRF. We extract four simple attributes of human legs. To define the boundary of extracted attributes mathematically, we used a Support Vector Data Description (SVDD) scheme. We establish an efficient leg-tracking scheme by exploiting a human walking model to achieve robust tracking under occlusions. The proposed approaches were successfully verified through various experiments.

  • In this paper, we propose a human model for analysis for human work pattern or human fault, where a gantry crane simulator is used to survey the property of human operation. From the input and output of gantry crane response, we make a human operation model by using conventional ARX identification method. For identify the human model, we assume the eight inputs and two outputs. By using the input/output data, we estimate the parameters of ARX of the human system model. For verify the proposed method, we compared the real data with the modeled data, where three kinds of work trajectory path are used.

  • This paper examines the empirical magnitude of local human capital spillovers in Korea during the 1980s and mid-1990s. Local human capital spillovers exists if plants in regions with a higher level of human capital can produce more given their own amount of input (Moretti 2004c). In particular, this paper explores an educational reform in South Korea which exogenously induced a large amount of variation in regional human capital levels. Using annually collected plant level data, I explore the effect of changes in the regional human capital levels induced by this reform on plant productivity in Korea. My results suggest that this effect is limited. I find a positive correlation between a regional level of human capital and plant productivity. However, after further addressing endogeneity using an instrumental variable, the effect of the overall regional human capital level on productivity decreases and becomes statistically insignificant.
