Buckling Analysis of Circular Cylinders with Initial Imperfection Subjected to Hydrostatic Pressure (수압을 받는 원통형 실린더의 초기부정을 고려한 좌굴해석)

  • Pressure hulls of submerged structures are generally designed as circular cylinders, spheres or cones with form of axisymmetric shell of revolution to withstand the high external pressure of deep ocean. The compressive buckling (implosion) due to hydrostatic pressure is the main concern of structural design of pressure hull and many design codes are provided for it. It is well-known that the buckling behavior of thin shell of revolution is very sensitive to the initial geometric imperfections introduced during the construction process of cutting and welding. Hence, the theoretical solutions for thin shells with perfect geometry often provide much higher buckling pressures than the measured data in tests or real structures and more precise structural analysis techniques are prerequisite for the safe design of pressure hulls. So this paper dealt with various buckling pressure estimation techniques for unstiffened circular cylinder under hydrostatic pressure conditions. The empirical design equations, eigenvalue analysis technique for critical pressure and collapse behaviors of thin cylindrical shells by the incremental nonlinear FE analysis were applied. Finally all the obtained results were compared with those of the pressure chamber test for the aluminium models. The pros and cons of each techniques were discussed and the most rational approach for the implosion of circular cylinder was recommended.

  • This study introduces a new cruise ship design model with residence concept by carrying out a specific design procedure on the regionally and culturally characterized cruise model. Cruise ship design requires a combined approach with architectural design skills, shipbuilding techniques and even the knowledge of business management. Contrary to the traditional cargo ship design in which the design of residence area on the top of cruise ship is performed first and then the lower part of the ship structure is determined as a final step, a top-down procedure for the conceptual ship design is adopted.

  • The motor boat which is the principal equipment of marine leisure depends heavily an imported motor boats in Korea But because the demand of marine leisure and motor boat increases, it is necessary to develope a cheap and safe domestic-manufactured motor boat. However the development of motor but for marine leisure is not performed at all in Korea in this paper, we consider the concept design of public motor but for marine leisure. The present status and possession prediction of leisure boat are investigated at first. And the benchmarking of the overseas motor bout for marine leisure is performed. And next the required performance, the range of principal dimension and the needed equipment of the public motor boat are investigated based on the benchmarking results of the overseas motor boat.   • Much work has already been done to control and regulate the worldwide problems caused by climate change, particularly the issues on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), having the highest form of concentration among GHGs composed around 1.0 billion tons of emission, and comprises about 98% of the total emissions from the shipping industry. Korean trade mainly rely on the sea transportation. Korean ship tonnages that was brought about by shipbuilders all over the country, continues to grow annually due to the prevailing demands on goods or material supplies and depicting only a small part of the global maritime activity. Nowadays, new build ships coming from the Korean Shipbuilders are being optimized by hull, structure and appendages design, The operational capability of the propulsion and auxiliary machineries in its maximum capacity to achieve the highest possible efficiencies for energy and onboard power use to mitigate $CO_2$ emissions are continually being done through the help of research and development. In this paper, the energy efficiency design index and anboard power capacity of Korean new build ships have been analyzed with response to data collected by ship types, and its respective fuel consumption in relation to $CO_2$ emission results. In response to climate change convention outcome proposals, the best way for the new build ships to become energy efficient is by lowering its operational speed thru adopting the state of the art diesel propulsion engines, patronizing the best sailing practice to lower the transportation cost on the different sea trade routes also helps in $CO_2$ mitigation.

Development of a High Speed, Coastal Passenger SWATH Ship with Good Speed Performance and Seakeeping Quality (내항성능과 속도성능이 우수한 고속 연안여객 소수선면 쌍동선형 개발)

  • One of good ways to make a ship perform well in rough seas is to reduce its waterplane area and accordingly is subject to a reduced wave exciting forties. However, a great reduction of the waterplane area may create a penalty in speed performance due to the increased ratio of the wetted area to the displacement volume. This paper suggests a new catamaran hull form which compromises the speed and seakeeping quality by increasing the waterplane area somehow compared with that of the conventional SWATH ship. A 350 passenger carrying SWATH ship with a cruising speed of 30 knots in sea state of 4 has been developed and its performance was validated by the model tests. The design concept resistance performance and seakeeping dualities of the design craft are presented together with its comparative performance comparison with other high speed crafts.

Development of Designed Formulae for Predicting Ultimate Strength of the Perforated Stiffened Plate subjected to Axial Compressive Loading (압축하중을 받는 유공보강판 구조의 최종강도 설계식 개발)

  • Ship structures are thin-walled structures and lots of cutouts, for example, of inner bottom structure, girder, upper deck hatch, floor and dia-frame etc. In the case where a plate has cutout it experiences reduced buckling and ultimate strength and at the same time the in-plane stress under compressive load produced by hull girder bending will be redistributed. In the present paper, we investigated several kinds of perforated stiffened model from actual ship structure and series of elasto-plastic large deflection analyses were performed to investigate into the influence of perforation on the buckling and ultimate strength of the perforated stiffened plate varying the cutout ratio, web height, thickness and type of cross-section by commercial FEA program(ANSYS). Closed-form formulas for predicting the ultimate strength of the perforated stiffened plate are empirically derived by curve fitting based on the Finite Element Analysis results. These formulas are used to evaluate the ultimate strength, which showed good correlation with FEM results. These results will be useful for evaluating the ultimate strength of the perforated stiffened plate in the preliminary design.
