In ship structures many of the structural plates have cutouts, for example, at inner bottom structure, girder, upper deck hatch, floor and dia-frame etc. In the case where a plate has a cutout it experiences reduced buckling and ultimate strength and at the same time the in-plane stress under compressive load produced by hull girder bending will be redistributed In general, actual ship structure adopted reinforcement of stiffener around the cutout in order to preventing from buckling so it need to examine a buckling and ultimate strength behaviour considering a cutout because In many ship yards used class rule for calculating buckling strength but it is difficult to evaluate perforate stiffened plate with random size. In the present paper, we investigated several kinds of perforated stiffened model from actual ship and then was performed finite element series analysis varying the cutout ratio, web height, thickness and type of cross-section using commercial FEA program(ANSYS) under compressive load.
A number of perforated plates are utilized for the passage of the crew and the equipment, reducing weight and the arrangement of piping. Hull girders in double bottom and floor plates are the typical parts which have those plates in a ship structure, and the perforated plate is usually positioned at the place which has less loading without local strength problems. In the case of utilizing the plate inevitably at the place which has large strength, an opening of the plate has large effect on the buckling strength due to in-plane rigidity and ultimate strength. Therefore the assessments of the elastic buckling strength and the ultimate strength for the perforated plate are the essential requirements for determining the dimensions of the parts at the initial design stage. With above reason, a need of the reasonable assessments for the elastic buckling strength and the ultimate strength has evolved. The numerical series analysis with the consideration of the effect due to various aspect ratios and slenderness ratios were performed using finite element method in this research. Simple formulas for the design are also proposed from the above analysis.

To cope with international regulations, such as Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) and so forth, and to enforce limitations on $CO_2$ emissions, green-ship technology to lower fuel consumption has been actively researched, and the development of an energy-saving device (ESD) is being pursued. In order to design an ESD for small and medium-sized domestic vessels, an analysis on flow characteristics has been performed in the present study. Through a model test and numerical analyses, the characteristics of flow around the stern bilge and bulb have been compared to improve wake quality and resistance performance. As a result of these comparisons and analyses, a vertical plate has been adopted,, as a new ESD. Design criteria for the proposed ESD are also suggested. By applying this new ESD, it is expected that the total resistance and average nominal wake can be reduced by 3.04 % and 18.8 %, respectively.

Ship's bottom slamming has been studied by many researchers for a very long time. But still some ships suffer structure damages caused by the bottom slamming impacts. This paper presents a practical computation method of the design impact pressure due to ship's bow bottom slamming. Large heave and pitch motions of a rigid hull ship are simulated by the nonlinear strip method in time domain and the relative colliding velocity between the bow bottom and the water surface is calculated using the simulated ship motions. The bottom slamming impact pressure is calculated as a product of the relative colliding velocity squared and the bottom slamming pressure coefficient that is obtained by modification of the SNAME pressure coefficients based on Ochi's slamming experiments. Not only the bottom slamming pressures but also the required bottom plate thicknesses are calculated and compared with those of the classification society rules. The comparisons show good agreements and it is confirmed that the present method is practically very useful for the bottom structure design against ship's bow bottom slamming impacts.

Spar platforms have several advantages for deploying wind turbines in offshore for depth beyond 120 m. The merit of spar platform is large range of topside payloads, favourable motions compared to other floating structures and minimum hull/deck interface. The main objective of this paper is to present the response analysis of the slack moored spar platform supporting 5MW wind turbine with bottom keel plates in regular and random waves, studied experimentally and numerically. A 1:100 scale model of the spar with sparD, sparCD and sparSD configuration was studied in the wave basin ($30{\times}30{\times}3m$) in Ocean engineering department in IIT Madras. In present study the effect of wind loading, blade dynamics and control, and tower elasticity are not considered. This paper presents the details of the studies carried out on a 16 m diameter and 100 m long spar buoy supporting a 90 m tall 5 MW wind turbine with 3600 kN weight of Nacelle and Rotor and 3500 kN weight of tower. The weight of the ballast and the draft of the spar are adjusted in such a way to keep the centre of gravity below the centre of buoyancy. The mooring lines are divided into four groups, each of which has four lines. The studies were carried out in regular and random waves. The operational significant wave height of 2.5 m and 10 s wave period and survival significant wave height of 6 m and 18 s wave period in 300 m water depth are considered. The wind speed corresponding to the operational wave height is about 22 knots and this wind speed is considered to be operating wind speed for turbines. The heave and surge accelerations at the top of spar platform were measured and are used for calculating the response. The geometric modeling of spar was carried out using Multisurf and this was directly exported to WAMIT for subsequent hydrodynamic and mooring system analysis. The numerical results were compared with experimental results and the comparison was found to be good. Parametric study was carried out to find out the effect of shape, size and spacing of keel plate and from the results obtained from present work ,it is recommended to use circular keel plate instead of square plate.

Nowadays, the high development of industrial technique demands the optimal design of marine structures to be welded under the water, because the underwater welding of the ship hull and marine structures can decrease manpower and cost of production. However there is not available at present any report on fatigue behavior about underwater welded joints. In this paper under tention- tension repeated fatigue stress with frequency of 10 cycles per second by local controlled system, the fatigue strength properties of underwater welded joints of SM41A-2 Plate-to-Plate of 10 mm thickness were experimentally examined. The results obtained were as follows : 1) The fatigue strength of underwater welded joints of SM41A-2 was peaked at the heat input of about 1, 400 joule/mm(180 A, 36 V), while, at the heat input of more than about 1, 100 joule/mm (160 A, 33 V) that of the underwater welds at the higher than cycle of life rather than the lower cycle was higher than that of the base metal but lower than that of the atmosphere welds on account of both cooling and notch effects. 2) The fatigue limit of underwater welds increased with an increase of heat input resulting in a peak of that at the heat input of about 1, 400 joule/mm and then decreased gradually. 3) The fatigue strength at N cycles was peaked between the heat input of about 1, 400 and 1, 700 joule/mm where the strain was rapidly increased. 4) It was confirmed that the optimal zone of heat input condition for obtaining the underwater welds fatigue strength higher than that of the base metal exists, and if out of this zone, the fatigue strength of the underwater welds was lower than that of the base metal because of lack weld penetration, inclusion of slag, voids, etc. 5) By the fatigue test, the underwater welds fractured brittly without visual deformation, so the strain was remarkably less than of the atmosphere welds. 6) The fatigue life factor was peaked at the heat input of about 1, 600 joule/mm (200 A, 36 V) at which the mean strain is a little higher than that of the base metal but quite lower than those of the atmosphere welds, resulting in good underwater welds because both fatigue strength and ductility of the underwater welds are higher than those of the base metal at such heat input.

In an effort to cope with recent high oil price and global warming, developments of air lubricated ships have been pursued to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to save fuel costs by reducing the frictional resistance. In this study, reduction in the frictional resistance by air lubrication with air layers generated on the lower surface of a flat plate was investigated experimentally in the large water tunnel of SSMB. The generated air layers were observed, and changes in the local frictional drag were measured at various flow rates of injected air. The results indicated that air lubrication with air layers might be useful in reducing the frictional resistance at specific conditions of air injection. Accordingly, resistance and self-propulsion tests for a 66K DWT bulk carrier were carried out in the towing tank of SSMB to estimate the expected net power savings.
