  • Technology for compressing low-bitrate multichannel audio coding is being standardized owing to the increasing need of consumer for multichannel audio contents. In this paper we propose the sound source location cue coding (SSLCC) for extremely compressing multichannel audio to be suitable at the narrow bandwidth transmission environment. To improve the compression capability of the conventional binaural cue coding(BCC), the SSLCC adopts the virtual source location information (VSLI) as a spatial cue parameter, a symmetric uniform quantizer, and Huffman coder. The objective and subjective assessment results show that the SSLCC provides lower bitrate and better audio quality than conventional BCC method.

  • The international standard for digital compression and coding of continuous-tone still image known as JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) standard is investigated for medical image archiving and communication. The JPEG standard has widely been accepted in the areas of electronic image communication, computer graphics, and multimedia applications, however, due to the lossy character of the JPEG compression its application to the field of medical imaging has been limited. In this paper, the JPEG standard is investigated for medical image compression with a series of head sections of magnetic resonance (MR) images (256 and 4096 graylevels, $256 {\times}256$size). Two types of Huffman codes are employed, i. e., one is optimized to the image statistics to be encoded and the other is a predetermined code, and their coding efficiencies are examined. From experiments, compression ratios of higher than 15 were obtained for the MR images without noticeable distortion. Error signal in the reconstructed images by the JPEG standard appears close to random noise. Compared to existing full-frame bit-allocation technique used for radiological image compression, the JPEG standard achieves higher compression with less Gibb's artifact. Feature of the progressive image build-up of the JPEG progressive coding may be useful in remote diognosis when data is transmitted through slow public communication channel.

  • In this paper, we construct real-time moving picture encoder based on fractal theory by using general purpose digital signal processors. The constructed encoder is implemented using two fixed-point general DSPs (ADSP2181) and performs image encoding by three stage pipeline structure. In the first pipeline stage, the image grabber acquires image data from NTSC standard image signals and stores digital image into frame memory. In the second stage, the main controller encode image dada using fractal algorithm. The last stage, output controller perform Huffman coding and result the coded data via RS422 port. The performance tests of the constructed encoder shows over 10 frames/sec encoding speed for QCIF data when all the frames are encoded. When we encode the images using the interframe and redundency based on the proposed algorithms, encoding speed increased over 30 frames/sec in average.

  • Several methods have been proposed to apply artificial neural networks to text compression in the past. However, the networks and targets are both limited to the small size due to hardware capability in the past. Modern GPUs have much better calculation capability than CPUs in an order of magnitude now, even though CPUs have become faster. It becomes possible now to train greater and complex neural networks in a shorter time. This paper proposed a method to transform the distribution of original data with a probabilistic neural predictor. Experiments were performed on a feedforward neural network and a recurrent neural network with gated-recurrent units. The recurrent neural network model outperformed feedforward network in compression rate and prediction accuracy.

  • Advanced mobile communication devices require a bright, high information content display in a small, light-weight, low power consumption package. For portable applications flexible (or conformable) and rugged displays will be the future. In this paper we outline our progress towards developing such a low power consumption active-matrix flexible OLED $(FOLED^{TM})$ display. We demonstrate full color 100 ppi QVGA active matrix OLED displays on flexible stainless steel substrates. Our work in this area is focused on integrating three critical enabling technologies. The first technology component is based on UDC's high efficiency long-lived phosphorescent OLED $(PHOLED^{TM})$ device technology, which has now been commercially demonstrated as meeting the low power consumption performance requirements for mobile display applications. Secondly, is the development of flexible active-matrix backplanes, and for this our team are employing PARC's Excimer Laser Annealed (ELA) poly-Si TFTs formed on metal foil substrates as this approach represents an attractive alternative to fabricating poly-Si TFTs on plastic for the realization of first generation flexible active matrix OLED displays. Unlike most plastics, metal foil substrates can withstand a large thermal load and do not require a moisture and oxygen permeation barrier. Thirdly, the key to reliable operation is to ensure that the organic materials are fully encapsulated in a package designed for repetitive flexing, and in this device we employ a multilayer thin film Barix encapsulation technology in collaboration with Vitex systems. Drive electronics and mechanical packaging are provided by L3 Displays.

  • An efficient quantization and encoding of BTC (Block Truncation Coding) parameters {($Y_{\alpha},\;Y_{\beta}),\;P_{{\beta}/{\beta}}$} are investigated, In our algorithm 4${\times}$4 blocks are classified into flat or edge block. While edge block is represented by two approximation level $Y_{\alpha},\;Y_{\beta}$ with label plane $P_{{\beta}/{\beta}}$, flat block is represented by single approximation level Y. The approximation levels Y, $Y_{\alpha}$ and $Y_{\beta}$ are encoded by predictive quatization specially designed, and the label plane $P_{{\beta}/{\beta}}$ is tried to be encoded using stored 32 reference plantes. The performance of the proposed scheme has appeared comparable to much more complex transform coding in terms of SNR, although it requires more study on the representation of small slope in background.

  • We student tow image characteristics, the smoothness and the similarity, which give rise to local and global redundancy in image representation. The smoothness means that the gray level values within a given block vary gradually rather than abruptly. The similarity means that any patterns in an image repeat itself anywhere in the rest of the image. In this sense, we proposed a lossless medical image compression scheme which exploits both types of redundancy. The proposed method segments the image into variable size blocks and encodes them depending on characteristics of the blocks. The proposed compression schemes works better 10~40[%] than other compression scheme such as the Huffman, the arithmetic, the Lempel-Ziv, HINT(Hierachical Interpolation) and the lossless scheme of JPEG with one predictor.

  • In this paper, $256{\times}256$ input image is classified into a validity block and an edge block of $8{\times}8$ block for image compression. DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform) is executed only for the DC coefficient that is validity coefficients for a validity block. Predict the position where a quantization coefficient becomes 0 for an edge block, I propose new algorithm to execute DCT in the reduced region. Not only this algorithm that I proposed reduces computational complexity of FDCT(Forward DCT) and IDCT(Inverse DCT) and decreases encoding time and decoding time. I let compressibility increase by accomplishing other stability verticality zigzag scan by the block size that was classified for each block at the time of huffman encoding each. In addition, the algorithm that I suggested reduces Run-Length by accomplishing the level verticality zigzag scan that is good for a classified block characteristic and, I offer the compressibility that improved thereby.

  • This paper presents a method that, by using a tree splay, dynamically modifies the fixed table of a VLC used in the standards and thus improves the performance of a video encoder. The previous standards, which drew up tables by using a limited number of images, were not able to accommodate the characteristics of new image input. The new method proposed in this paper employs the probabilistic characteristics of an image input, thus making encoding more effective. Furthermore, the present study also proposes a method to regulate the weight in order that the accumulated probabilities can make a dominant symbol emerge, while keeping the probability adequate and thus maximally accommodating the characteristics of the image input. The results from applying the proposed method to a variety of image sequences showed that, while various types of images yielded slightly different results, it improved the performance up to a maximum of 0.23㏈, compared to MPEG-4 standard.
